Commonwealth Scholarships are given to talented individuals with the potential to make a positive impact on the global stage.

As part of the UK’s ongoing commitment to the Commonwealth, each year around 800 students are given the chance to undertake postgraduate degrees with UK universities.

If you are from a Commonwealth country and believe you could make a difference to the world but you can’t afford to fund your UK studies on your own, then you could be the ideal candidate for a Commonwealth Scholarship.

What are Commonwealth Scholarships?

The Commonwealth Scholarships scheme is aimed at students from across the Commonwealth who would not otherwise be able to afford to study in the UK. By funding postgraduate studies in a range of different study formats, the scheme helps to support future innovators and leaders.

This historic award is the UK’s primary scholarship scheme focused on supporting British international development goals. It is designed to attract outstanding talent to UK universities whilst also supporting sustainable development overseas.

Who can apply?

To apply for a Commonwealth Scholarship, you must be a citizen or permanent resident of a Commonwealth country. You will still be eligible if you are a refugee or British protected person.

You also need to have an undergraduate honours degree of at least upper second class (2:1). If you wish to study a PhD, you will need an appropriate master’s degree too.

Finally, you must be unable to afford to study in the UK without the scholarship.

The eligibility criteria for each type of scholarship and fellowship vary. More information is available on the CSC website .

What type of awards are available?

The Commonwealth Scholarships Commission offers:

CSC Development Themes

All Commonwealth Scholarships which are funded by the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) are offered under six CSC development themes

  1. Science and technology for development
  2. Strengthening health systems and capacity
  3. Promoting global prosperity
  4. Strengthening global peace, security and governance
  5. Strengthening resilience and response to crises
  6. Access, inclusion and opportunity

There is no restriction on what you can study but the Commonwealth Scholarships Commission gives priority to applicants whose studies are most relevant to their development criteria.

What financial support is available?

Most scholarships are fully funded which means that, as well as covering your tuition fees, you will also receive your airfare to and from the UK and a living allowance to support you while you are here.

How to apply

Depending on which scholarship you are applying for, you may need to apply through a National Nominating Agency , a university , or a Non-Governmental Organisation

What Should I know about the Commonwealth Scholarships?

The Commonwealth Scholarship Commission (CSC) in the UK awards over 900 scholarships and fellowships for postgraduate study and professional development to Commonwealth citizens each year.

The CSC aims to contribute to the UK’s international development aims and wider overseas interests, support excellence in UK higher education, and sustain the principles of the Commonwealth.

The CSC selects candidates on the basis of merit and their potential to contribute to the needs of their home countries.

Commonwealth scholarships and fellowships in the UK are funded by the Department for International Development (for developing Commonwealth countries) and the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy. It also receives funding from the Scottish Government (for developed Commonwealth countries) while working with the UK universities.

The Commonwealth Scholarship Commission (CSC) in the United Kingdom is responsible for managing Britain’s contribution to the Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP). In addition to this, the CSC also nominates UK citizens for scholarships to study in other Commonwealth countries under the CSFP.

World Scholarship Forum is poised to bring you opportunities that are genuine and authentic. The UK Government Scholarship is aimed at raising the World’s Academic Status with Massive Commonwealth Opportunities.

Commonwealth Foundation Scholarships

The Foundation provides grants of up to £ 200,000 for four years to support innovative ideas and approaches to projects that seek to strengthen the capacity of civic voices to engage with governments and to have the potential to improve governance outcomes and participation through their participation.

The Foundation builds on the power of stories and narrative for social change and will support creative approaches that have the potential to influence public discourse.

Hence, the selection process is highly competitive and the selected projects are designed to work with the potential to lead to the worst results in the strategic logic model of the Foundation.

However, the teams of the Foundation program participate in the definition of the approach to call for proposals. An internal review process, which includes a large list of the grant team, followed by a brief list process that involves all program teams, prepares a final list of requests presented to the grant committee.

The final decisions on which projects to support are made by the Member States represented in the Foundation Grants Committee.
