Eligibility

Scholarships are normally offered to full-time students based on academic achievement and course load and usually require that the recipient re-register at the University of Manitoba for the subsequent year. In most cases, students must register for and complete at least 80 per cent of a full course load per term (i.e. a minimum of 24 credit hours during the fall/winter terms), unless otherwise specified in the terms of the scholarship by the donor (or a representative of the donor).

Please note that graduate students do not have to adhere to credit hour minimums provided they are registered as full-time students over the fall and winter terms with the Faculty of Graduate Studies.

The Faculty of Graduate Studies offers scholarships to recognize and reward the excellence of international graduate students pursuing Master’s or Ph.D. degrees at the University of Manitoba. The scholarships, valued at up to the international differential tuition fee amount, will be offered to graduate students who:

(1) are international students (i.e., those in Canada on study permits);

(2) are enrolled full-time in the Faculty of Graduate Studies in either:

     (a) the second year of a Master’s program with a two-year fee structure;

     (b) the second year of a Ph.D. program with a two-year fee structure;

     (c) the second or third year of a Ph.D. program with a three-year fee
     structure; or

     (d) the first year of a Ph.D. program after completing a Master’s degree at
     the University of Manitoba;

(3) are paying the international student differential tuition fee;

(4) have achieved a minimum grade point average of 3.5 based on their last 60 credit hours (or equivalent) of study or last equivalent two full years;

(5) show great promise as researchers and as graduate students;

(6) are not recipients of external award funding that pays for their tuition.

This scholarship may be held with the University of Manitoba Graduate Fellowship (UMGF) and other awards offered by the University of Manitoba, but may not be held in conjunction with the International Graduate Student Entrance Scholarship or the International Graduate Student Bursary. Students may be considered for this scholarship in each year of eligible study. Students who are enrolled in a re-registration year and are paying only continuing fees are not eligible for consideration.

The selection committee will have the discretion to determine the number and value of awards offered each year based on available revenue.

Scholarships will be offered until available funds are exhausted. Funding will be confirmed on an annual basis.

This scholarship will be administered by the Faculty of Graduate Studies.

The Vice-Provost (Graduate Education) and Dean of the Faculty of Graduate Studies (or designate) will name the selection committee for this award.

The Board of Governors of the University of Manitoba has the right to modify the terms of this award if, because of changed conditions, it becomes necessary to do so. Such modification shall conform as closely as possible to the expressed intention of the donor in establishing the award.

International Undergraduate Student Entrance Scholarships

University of Manitoba Undergraduate Scholarships (Bursary) for  International Students

The International Undergraduate Student Entrance Scholarship was established to reward academic excellence by international students graduating from international high schools and entering studies at the University of Manitoba.

Scholarships will be offered to students who:

  • are international students (i.e. in Canada on valid study permits) who have applied for admission to any Faculty or School at the University of Manitoba by the deadline date of March 1;
  • are paying the international student tuition fee rates;
  • have achieved a minimum high school average of 85% based on the best five senior level academic courses from our approved General Entrance Scholarship list.

The value of each award is set each year in tiers based on high school grade averages. As an example, for the year 2020-2021 the award values were as follows:

  • Averages greater than or equal to 95% –  $3,000
  • Averages greater than or equal to 90% –  $2,000
  • Averages greater than or equal to 85% –  $1,000

This scholarship cannot be held with a University of Manitoba International Baccalaureate Entrance Scholarship or with any other award offered through the University of Manitoba Entrance Scholarship program.

International Undergraduate Student Scholarships

The International Undergraduate Student Scholarship was established to reward excellence in scholastic achievement by international students at The University of Manitoba.

Scholarships are offered to international students who:

  • are in Canada on valid study permits;
  • who have completed a minimum of 24 credit hours in any Faculty or School at the University of Manitoba;
  • show exceptional academic achievement on courses completed in the last regular academic session (minimum sessional grade point average of 3.5);
  • are continuing in the next consecutive year of full-time undergraduate study in their program during the Fall/Winter academic session.

Those meeting the above criteria will be ranked by sessional grade point average and scholarships will be offered until all available funds are exhausted or the grade point standard is reached. Eligible recipients will be notified by the end of July.

International Student Bursaries

To qualify for bursaries at the University of Manitoba, you must apply for the University of Manitoba General Bursary through Aurora in addition to any individual applications that may be required for specific awards.

General bursary applications for Fall and Winter Terms will be available in the Aurora Student Portal in early August. This application, with supporting documentation, must be submitted to the Financial Aid and Awards office by Oct. 1. International students in their first year of post-secondary study in Canada are not eligible to apply to the general bursary program.

Eligibility

Many award opportunities are available to UM students based on academic achievement and financial need. Here are some things to keep in mind when you are applying for scholarships and awards:

  • Scholarships are normally offered to full-time students based on academic achievement and course load.  
  • Students who receive an entrance scholarship are required to enrol in at least 24 credit hours at the University of Manitoba in the current year in order to qualify for funding.   
  • In most cases, students must register for and complete at least 80 percent of a full course in the current academic year to be eligible for scholarships.  
  • Some course load exceptions apply and are specified in the terms of the scholarship by the donor or a representative of the donor. 
  • Graduate students do not have to adhere to credit hour minimums provided they are registered as full-time students over the fall and winter terms with the Faculty of Graduate Studies. 
  • Students may apply for bursaries based on financial need. Bursary applications are available through Aurora in mid-August and due Oct. 1.

All new UM students are considered for a wide range of entrance scholarships and awards. Most entrance scholarships are based on demonstrated academic excellence in the last one or two years of high school. 

Simply by applying for admission to the University and submitting your transcripts, you will be considered for the University of Manitoba General Entrance Scholarships and more. Other entrance scholarships, such as the BMO Financial Group Leader of Tomorrow Scholarships and the Schulich Leader Scholarships require applications. Receiving your entrance award

If you are registered in both Fall and Winter Terms in at least an 80% course load (equivalent of 24 credit hours) and meet the eligibility requirements for an entrance award, your award will be disbursed into your tuition fee account at the end of August. To accept your award, log in to your Aurora student account, select “Student awards and financial aid,” and follow the instructions provided.

If your award covers more than your tuition for the Fall Term, any excess will be applied to your Winter term tuition, reducing what is due in early January.

If you drop a class and fall below 24 credit hours (or an 80% course load), the University can take up to the full amount of the award back. If you have questions about whether you will be in jeopardy of losing your award due to course withdrawal, call us at 204-474-9534 for more information.

University of Manitoba Graduate Fellowship (UMGF)

Each year, more than $2 million dollars in university graduate fellowships are offered to full-time master’s and PhD students to recognize and support academic excellence. The fellowships are offered to students who have demonstrated superior intellectual ability and academic accomplishment.

Students must be recommended by their department or unit to the Faculty of Graduate Studies for a UMGF.

Value and duration

UMGF master’s awards are valued at $14,000 per year for 12 or 24 months, for up to a total of $28,000.

UMGF doctoral awards are valued at $18,000 per year for 12, 24, 36 or 48 months, for up to a total of $72,000.

Departments/units determine the value and duration of an award and must meet the eligibility criteria as outlined in the eligibility table.

Total maximum UMGF support for any individual graduate student is five years (60 months).  This means that a student who has received a UMGF for two years in their master’s program will only be eligible for three years of UMGF funding at the doctoral level.

Applicants who are successful in the current competition must take up their awards in May 2021, September 2021 or January 2022. Students who are unable to accept their award within this academic year must decline the award.

Eligibility

Students must have a minimum admission GPA of 3.0 to be considered for this award. Please contact your department as they may have a higher GPA requirement.

To hold an award:
Students must have been admitted as a full-time student without provision or have cleared provisional admission as a master’s or PhD student in a graduate program at the University of Manitoba.
