  4. Clinical Laboratory Science/Medical Technology/Technologist

A medical or clinical laboratory technologist manages clinical laboratories and performs a wide range of specialized, complex procedures in the general area of the clinical laboratory. Expect to take courses in chemistry, biology, mathematics, microbiology, test implementation, laboratory management, laboratory procedures and quality assurance controls, and personnel supervision. Technologists analyze tissue samples and body fluids such as blood and urine, to determine a patient?s state of health. They also conduct and supervise clinical trials, research experiments, and consult with physicians and clinical researchers on diagnoses, disease causation and spread, and research outcomes. Clinical technologists must report and record accurate and complete data such as medical tests and results, which is why it?s vital to be detail oriented and possess technical skills.

With this degree most individuals will work in state, local, or private hospitals, but other possibilities of employment are in laboratories, at offices of physicians, or with the federal government. Technologists in small labs perform a variety of tests, while technologists who have specialties such as immunohematology technologists, phlebotomists, and microbiologists typically work in the larger laboratories. Some states require laboratory personnel to be licensed or registered, and a certification is most often needed to acquire the license. The job outlook for medical and clinical laboratory technologists is 13 percent through 2020, which is about average.

  1. DePaul University4 Year Chicago, IL Rating 3.74 out of 5 3,509 reviews#5 Best Colleges in IllinoisJunior: I am a commuter at DePaul University and I love it! It is in an area easily accessible from anywhere in the city as the campus is right off the Fullerton CTA train station. Its location gives great opportunity to access many main attractions of the city. Once you step on campus the environment is very welcoming with such friendly staff and faculty. The professors always seem passionate about the classes they’re teaching and they are also more than willing to aid you and make themselves available for you. There is always a variety of events happening on campus, even for commuters which engages them to really feel like they belong as a student. There is always great spots like the quad to hang out with friends, and class sizes are relatively small for college classes allowing you to meet great friends and allowing the professors to really get to know their students and personalize their teaching. Overall, a great school!

  2. Loyola University Chicago4 Year Chicago, IL Rating 3.63 out of 5 2,891 reviews#8 Best Colleges in IllinoisSophomore: I love my school so much! The sense of community is there but with it being a medium-size school is it sometimes hard to find your “people” but that’s the case at every university. During my time at Loyola, I have had wonderful professors that truly care about their student’s academics and well-being. Although I’ve had one difficult professor I would say that my overall Loyola does it’s best hiring faculty that truly cares for its students. Also, living on campus has been wonderful as the dorms are clean, well made, and are newer. I would say that I wish Loyola did not allow for triples as that experience was excruciating and terrible in my personal experience. The food also provided at the school is miserable to eat as there have been minor occurrences but these are small things that could easily be fixed by creating strict rules. Overall, I love Loyola and all that it has to offer, from being located in the wonderful city of Chicago to having a very strong community!

  3. Bradley University4 Year Peoria, IL Rating 3.49 out of 5 1,153 reviews#9 Best Colleges in IllinoisFreshman: Don’t listen to a lot of these reviews. There is WiFi, but it isn’t the best. The campus itself is very safe, but, remember, you’ll be near Peoria so exercise additional caution at night. There are some really bad teachers, but they represent the minority here. You can SIGNIFICANTLY cut out costs by joining a fraternity by up to $7,000 a year. It’s possible to party here, but you gotta be smart. The university does crack down, but they’re not very good at busting parties. The academics here are really good, though Sakai really sucks. Fraternity culture is simply wonderful. If you’re looking to become more social, join one! The university dorms are decent, but fraternity houses are much better. I was surprised by the food at the university. Not gourmet, but definitely pay for the same quality at a higher end hotel. The campus, especially during fall, is beautiful. Overall, your experience is highly dictated by how dependent and smart you are with your time.

They were able to answer all my questions and get back to me quickly with no problem. Everyone is so nice and welcoming. 5. University of Illinois at Springfield4 Year Springfield, IL Rating 3.58 out of 5 470 reviews#17 Best Colleges in IllinoisJunior: Pros: Great campus and great teachers. All teachers have at least an MD so you won’t be taught by a random graduate student who is there just for the credit. The teachers are passionate, class sizes are very small, and people are always willing to help you succeed! The internship programs are really great and opportunitive. There are also unusually no classes on Fridays so always 3-day weekends.

Cons: If you’re under 21, live far from home, and have no transportation or money to get it: you probably will be extremely bored. The campus is always quiet and the parties on campus are extremely lame and crowded. Luckily there’s a bar everywhere in Springfield, even one right next to campus where every Thursday people go to party which is usually always fun.

  6. Illinois State University4 Year Normal, IL Rating 3.63 out of 5 2,887 reviews#18 Best Colleges in IllinoisFreshman: Overall, my first semester at Illinois State University was very interesting due to the pandemic and adjusting to college life. However, meeting new people at Illinois State University made my college experience more at ease and enjoyable. I like how the school has many resources to help students with their academic and financial troubles. People at Illinois State University are eager to pursue their goals which helped me pushed throughout my first semester in college. Also, I had joined a workout group and met a nice instructor and people the atmosphere energetic and exciting . However, when I first came into the University it was a little hectic because I was new and didn’t know anything about college. But I’ve had friends who are already attend the University to help me with my little inconveniences. However, I would like to see more of is diversity, so far I’ve seen a few minorities on campus. But overall, I would recommend this school!

The campus is very safe and flexible with all schedules. The class types are structured, open learning and online. What ever your goals or obstacles are they are behind their students 110% of the way. The cost per credit hour is significantly smaller than all other local schools. 9. Eastern Illinois University4 Year Charleston, IL Rating 3.51 out of 5 1,298 reviews#21 Best Colleges in IllinoisJunior: Eastern Illinois University has given me the collegiate career I always dreamt of. As a student that was accepted as a Freshman, I can tell you that I would give anything to go back and relive my experience again. Ultimately, choosing EIU was the best decision I have ever made. If you are looking for a wide variety of opportunities to get involved on campus they have it! Not only have I experienced greek life, but their honor society’s and clubs are outstanding. Not to mention their faculty is filled with some of the most diverse and outgoing individuals I have ever met. They are professional yet understand that life happens. They truly want you to exceed at EIU and all of the professors I have had thus far have provided me with a path to do so. Looking at the cost of the University, it does not break the bank. Through their scholarships, for both freshman and transfer students, it is easy to pay your way if that is what you intend on doing. I absolutely recommend EIU to everyone!

I started as an Associate’s in Early Childhood Education degree but had to switch since they didn’t have the classes that I needed in the time frame that I wanted. Overall, the professors were really nice and friendly, unless you don’t turn in assignments on time. The campus was always clean. When the pandemic started, the college only had to adjust a little bit but they were able to switch it promptly. As the pandemic went on, they continued to improve their methods of virtual teaching. All of this was what I was looking for when I first started looking at colleges. I will always remember my time at Oakton!

There are hundreds of organizations on campus from greek life, to academic clubs, athletics, and music. Many of these organizations offer diversity and immerse you into the different cultures around campus. There is a bus system that is great during weekdays, but barely runs on weekends. I love how close campus is to the city of Dekalb and to all the shopping areas. The school has a great mix of students who live on-campus, off-campus, and commuters. And added bonus is the uniqueness of it… it is one of seven work colleges in the country, and we are the only student managed one! I feel such pride and feel so proud to be here. I am a first-year student, and can already say I am a resident assistant and the future president of Student Senate for the 2019-20 school year, and much more. 15. Eureka College4 Year Eureka, IL Rating 3.54 out of 5 156 reviewsJunior: For as small as Eureka is, you get the opportunities, connections, and independence that a larger university has to offer while becoming a well known member of the community and getting the attention from professors and staff that a school like ISU can’t compete with. Since Eureka is privately funded, we they don’t always have the money to upgrade or fix what most schools would consider to be “eye sores” or “historical but outdated.” Eureka’s campus has some amazing rich history, both in the dorm buildings, one of which was built in 1916 and still stands in full use, and the academic buildings, some of which are original to the schools founding in 1855! What Eureka cannot offer in size, it makes up for in personality and genuine character.

It is a great way to complete the general classes before transferring to a 4-year college. I am so grateful for the teachers, staff, and communication this college has! I loved going there and completing some of my classes early!

  19. Benedictine University4 Year Lisle, IL Rating 3.56 out of 5 458 reviewsSenior: I really like the school environment beaucse it gives you the college feel without making you feel over whelmed. I personally prefer smaller school environments where I’m able to have class sizes that range from 15-30 people and i enjoy being able to have one on one interaction with my professors. Also i enjoy that they have a cafe that provides Starbucks drinks for students as they are able to enjoy a drink! Some improvements the school can change as a whole i better space for studying areas. There isn’t much space for students to find a quite and spacious area where there able to study. It is pretty limited to kindlon center and if they expanded or created more areas for studying it would benefit the students greatly. Also i believe that they should open more food centers within the school so students are able to pick up snacks or a lunch in between classes. Lastly another improvement they can make is parking. I feel that there is a definite need for more parking spaces.

Students who look forward to earning a degree within two years should go to Shawnee Community College. Teachers who teach at Shawnee are very helpful and very understandable no matter what race you are, everyone get treated equally. Shawnee is one school that will not let individuals get behind. A message to people is “your college experience all depends on you”. Long as individuals do what it takes in order to stay on task, there is no way anyone will fail. Overall, Shawnee was definitely a great choice for me.

The response to COVID was spectacular, given how little time they had to prepare. We were given so many resources to better our chances outside of this college, and I am so appreciative of ICC. The only thing I would like to change is maybe more consistency within departments and communication.

There goal is to make a difference in our individual live and give us learning opportunities for us to be successful. From the president to the janitors, everyone here gives me the tools to succeed and to be prepared for what my next steps will be. John A stands out from other community colleges with the programs they offer and the facilities they have on campus. Community colleges have bad reputations and going into it I had my fears of how I would not get a good education. However, John A Logan Impressed me with how much they have made a difference in my life.

  24. Southwestern Illinois College2 Year Belleville, IL Rating 3.79 out of 5 398 reviewsSophomore: I am glad I made the decision to start off at a community college, especially one that is right down the road from me at the Granite City campus. I also attend one class at the Bellville campus as well. There is no shame in starting off here and many of my friends chose to take this path as well and were satisfied with their result. SWIC is a diverse college that offers many activities, clubs, workshops and tutoring. I am part of the TRIO program at SWIC, with Covid-19, it has been hard to do certain activities but the program still offers online workshops and other covid safe activities! I am glad that I go here and that I got to experience a great college with many great people!

  25. Rasmussen College – Rockford4 Year Rockford, IL Rating 4 out of 5 136 reviewsSophomore: After 12 years of working in the nursing field I have chosen to return to school to expand my knowledge in the health care field or change careers, not exactly sure yet. My admissions advisor, Marcena Reed, was such a great help. She was quick to respond to my questions, helped me through the admissions process, gave me great feed back, and continues to encourage me throughout my first few courses. This personal touch really make you feel connected to the school.
Once you start your courses each student is assigned academic advisor. Jesus Parra is my advisor and I would be lying if said that I thought I would never speak to him. A couple a weeks into my first course, he called me to check up and see how I was doing as well as asking me if I need anything. I was surprised and taken back. I am a “head down and don’t make eye-contact” type of student but this type of personal connection made me stop and think that maybe Rasmussen really cares about their students’ success.
