  1. DePaul University4 Year Chicago, IL Rating 3.74 out of 5 3,509 reviews#5 Best Colleges in IllinoisJunior: I am a commuter at DePaul University and I love it! It is in an area easily accessible from anywhere in the city as the campus is right off the Fullerton CTA train station. Its location gives great opportunity to access many main attractions of the city. Once you step on campus the environment is very welcoming with such friendly staff and faculty. The professors always seem passionate about the classes they’re teaching and they are also more than willing to aid you and make themselves available for you. There is always a variety of events happening on campus, even for commuters which engages them to really feel like they belong as a student. There is always great spots like the quad to hang out with friends, and class sizes are relatively small for college classes allowing you to meet great friends and allowing the professors to really get to know their students and personalize their teaching. Overall, a great school!

  2. Loyola University Chicago4 Year Chicago, IL Rating 3.63 out of 5 2,891 reviews#8 Best Colleges in IllinoisSophomore: I love my school so much! The sense of community is there but with it being a medium-size school is it sometimes hard to find your “people” but that’s the case at every university. During my time at Loyola, I have had wonderful professors that truly care about their student’s academics and well-being. Although I’ve had one difficult professor I would say that my overall Loyola does it’s best hiring faculty that truly cares for its students. Also, living on campus has been wonderful as the dorms are clean, well made, and are newer. I would say that I wish Loyola did not allow for triples as that experience was excruciating and terrible in my personal experience. The food also provided at the school is miserable to eat as there have been minor occurrences but these are small things that could easily be fixed by creating strict rules. Overall, I love Loyola and all that it has to offer, from being located in the wonderful city of Chicago to having a very strong community!

  3. Bradley University4 Year Peoria, IL Rating 3.49 out of 5 1,153 reviews#9 Best Colleges in IllinoisFreshman: Don’t listen to a lot of these reviews. There is WiFi, but it isn’t the best. The campus itself is very safe, but, remember, you’ll be near Peoria so exercise additional caution at night. There are some really bad teachers, but they represent the minority here. You can SIGNIFICANTLY cut out costs by joining a fraternity by up to $7,000 a year. It’s possible to party here, but you gotta be smart. The university does crack down, but they’re not very good at busting parties. The academics here are really good, though Sakai really sucks. Fraternity culture is simply wonderful. If you’re looking to become more social, join one! The university dorms are decent, but fraternity houses are much better. I was surprised by the food at the university. Not gourmet, but definitely pay for the same quality at a higher end hotel. The campus, especially during fall, is beautiful. Overall, your experience is highly dictated by how dependent and smart you are with your time.

They were able to answer all my questions and get back to me quickly with no problem. Everyone is so nice and welcoming. All I’ve heard is good things about the nursing program and how involved faculty is with the nursing students. I’m very excited to start!

  5. University of Illinois at Springfield4 Year Springfield, IL Rating 3.58 out of 5 470 reviews#17 Best Colleges in IllinoisJunior: Pros: Great campus and great teachers. All teachers have at least an MD so you won’t be taught by a random graduate student who is there just for the credit. The teachers are passionate, class sizes are very small, and people are always willing to help you succeed! The internship programs are really great and opportunitive. There are also unusually no classes on Fridays so always 3-day weekends.

Cons: If you’re under 21, live far from home, and have no transportation or money to get it: you probably will be extremely bored. The campus is always quiet and the parties on campus are extremely lame and crowded. Luckily there’s a bar everywhere in Springfield, even one right next to campus where every Thursday people go to party which is usually always fun.

  6. Illinois State University4 Year Normal, IL Rating 3.63 out of 5 2,887 reviews#18 Best Colleges in IllinoisFreshman: Overall, my first semester at Illinois State University was very interesting due to the pandemic and adjusting to college life. However, meeting new people at Illinois State University made my college experience more at ease and enjoyable. I like how the school has many resources to help students with their academic and financial troubles. People at Illinois State University are eager to pursue their goals which helped me pushed throughout my first semester in college. Also, I had joined a workout group and met a nice instructor and people the atmosphere energetic and exciting . However, when I first came into the University it was a little hectic because I was new and didn’t know anything about college. But I’ve had friends who are already attend the University to help me with my little inconveniences. However, I would like to see more of is diversity, so far I’ve seen a few minorities on campus. But overall, I would recommend this school!

  9. Eastern Illinois University4 Year Charleston, IL Rating 3.51 out of 5 1,298 reviews#21 Best Colleges in IllinoisJunior: Eastern Illinois University has given me the collegiate career I always dreamt of. As a student that was accepted as a Freshman, I can tell you that I would give anything to go back and relive my experience again. Ultimately, choosing EIU was the best decision I have ever made. If you are looking for a wide variety of opportunities to get involved on campus they have it! Not only have I experienced greek life, but their honor society’s and clubs are outstanding. Not to mention their faculty is filled with some of the most diverse and outgoing individuals I have ever met. They are professional yet understand that life happens. They truly want you to exceed at EIU and all of the professors I have had thus far have provided me with a path to do so. Looking at the cost of the University, it does not break the bank. Through their scholarships, for both freshman and transfer students, it is easy to pay your way if that is what you intend on doing. I absolutely recommend EIU to everyone!

I started as an Associate’s in Early Childhood Education degree but had to switch since they didn’t have the classes that I needed in the time frame that I wanted. Overall, the professors were really nice and friendly, unless you don’t turn in assignments on time. The campus was always clean. When the pandemic started, the college only had to adjust a little bit but they were able to switch it promptly. As the pandemic went on, they continued to improve their methods of virtual teaching. All of this was what I was looking for when I first started looking at colleges. I will always remember my time at Oakton!

There are hundreds of organizations on campus from greek life, to academic clubs, athletics, and music. Many of these organizations offer diversity and immerse you into the different cultures around campus. There is a bus system that is great during weekdays, but barely runs on weekends. I love how close campus is to the city of Dekalb and to all the shopping areas. The school has a great mix of students who live on-campus, off-campus, and commuters. People at NIU are also really great. You meet so many new people that are genuine and down to earth. Overall, a great undergraduate experience!

  14. Blackburn College4 Year Carlinville, IL Rating 3.23 out of 5 111 reviewsFreshman: I absolutely adore Blackburn College. I started here because it is a small, private, liberal-arts college. And added bonus is the uniqueness of it… it is one of seven work colleges in the country, and we are the only student managed one! I feel such pride and feel so proud to be here. I am a first-year student, and can already say I am a resident assistant and the future president of Student Senate for the 2019-20 school year, and much more. The professors are wonderful, the academics are good because they are challenging, and so much more. I am so proud to be a Blackburn student.

  15. Eureka College4 Year Eureka, IL Rating 3.54 out of 5 156 reviewsJunior: For as small as Eureka is, you get the opportunities, connections, and independence that a larger university has to offer while becoming a well known member of the community and getting the attention from professors and staff that a school like ISU can’t compete with. Since Eureka is privately funded, we they don’t always have the money to upgrade or fix what most schools would consider to be “eye sores” or “historical but outdated.” Eureka’s campus has some amazing rich history, both in the dorm buildings, one of which was built in 1916 and still stands in full use, and the academic buildings, some of which are original to the schools founding in 1855! What Eureka cannot offer in size, it makes up for in personality and genuine character.

  19. Benedictine University4 Year Lisle, IL Rating 3.56 out of 5 458 reviewsSenior: I really like the school environment beaucse it gives you the college feel without making you feel over whelmed. I personally prefer smaller school environments where I’m able to have class sizes that range from 15-30 people and i enjoy being able to have one on one interaction with my professors. Also i enjoy that they have a cafe that provides Starbucks drinks for students as they are able to enjoy a drink! Some improvements the school can change as a whole i better space for studying areas. There isn’t much space for students to find a quite and spacious area where there able to study. It is pretty limited to kindlon center and if they expanded or created more areas for studying it would benefit the students greatly. Also i believe that they should open more food centers within the school so students are able to pick up snacks or a lunch in between classes. Lastly another improvement they can make is parking. I feel that there is a definite need for more parking spaces.

  25. Rasmussen College – Rockford4 Year Rockford, IL Rating 4 out of 5 136 reviewsSophomore: After 12 years of working in the nursing field I have chosen to return to school to expand my knowledge in the health care field or change careers, not exactly sure yet. My admissions advisor, Marcena Reed, was such a great help. She was quick to respond to my questions, helped me through the admissions process, gave me great feed back, and continues to encourage me throughout my first few courses. This personal touch really make you feel connected to the school.
Once you start your courses each student is assigned academic advisor. Jesus Parra is my advisor and I would be lying if said that I thought I would never speak to him. A couple a weeks into my first course, he called me to check up and see how I was doing as well as asking me if I need anything. I was surprised and taken back. I am a “head down and don’t make eye-contact” type of student but this type of personal connection made me stop and think that maybe Rasmussen really cares about their students’ success.

I feel I get more out of my campus and academic experience than what I’m paying for! The campus itself is safe and has good security. However, Waubonsee is most definitely not a classical “party school.” And while the college offers a variety of student activities and clubs, it doesn’t necessarily have the same school spirit as a traditional 4 year school. But overall, Waubonsee is a good place to pursue your academic goals whether you’re fresh out of high school or you’ve been out of school for a while.

Medical Laboratory Technician

Under the supervision of Medical Laboratory Scientists, MLTs perform most of the common laboratory tests in a medical laboratory. They examine and analyze body fluids and cells. They look for bacteria, parasites, and other microorganisms; analyze the chemical content of fluids; match blood for transfusion; and test for drug levels in the blood that show how a patient is responding to treatment. The MLTs use microscopes, cell counters, and other high-tech, computer-operated laboratory equipment. After testing and examining the samples, they analyze the results and relay them to the physicians. Those test results help doctors determine the right treatments for patients — and occasionally lead to extraordinary breakthroughs.

MEDICAL LABORATORY TECHNICIAN MLT-FCC

If you’re feeling sick and decide to visit your doctor, he may collect a specimen or sample to test for an illness or disease.  Ever wondered what goes on while you’re waiting for results? This is when a medical laboratory technician (MLT) is working hard to conduct the test, interpret the results, and help your doctor correctly diagnose and treat your symptoms.

Frontier Community College now offers a two-year Medical Laboratory Technician program.

An MLT performs several analytical tests that help physicians diagnose and treat diseases.  Primary job duties include preparing specimens, collecting blood samples, accurately monitoring tests and procedures, matching blood for transfusions, and analyzing the chemical content of fluids.  Technicians are expected to handle sophisticated lab equipment that searches for microorganisms, including cell counters, microscopes, and automated analyzers.  MLTs also have diverse functions in the areas of clinical decision-making, information management, regulatory compliance, and quality assurance.

HANDS-ON LEARNING

In addition to classroom lectures, students in the MLT program participate in classroom labs and experiments. The program’s designated classroom, located in Mason Hall, is equipped with the latest technology and equipment to create an enhanced learning experience.

A clinical rotation (internship) is also a required component of the program.  During this time, students will work off-campus with an affiliated medical laboratory.  Clinical rotations are structured to provide exposure to all departments of a laboratory, including microbiology, immunology, chemistry, urinalysis, and more.  Students will work at their clinical rotation 16 hours per week during the last two semesters of the program.

This hands-on experience will allow MLT students to work one-on-one with laboratory professionals, learn how to operate equipment, and apply course knowledge to real-life situations.  Clinical rotations also have the potential to provide future job opportunities or networking within the field.

GROWING OPPORTUNITIES

After completing the program, graduates are eligible to sit for the Board of Certification exam to become a Certified Medical Technician. This is offered through the American Society of Clinical Pathology and is paid for and administered online.  Once an individual passes the exam, he or she will be a certified MLT and can begin working in the field.

Many healthcare organizations allow graduates to begin working immediately after completing the program and set a specific date by which the individual must pass the certification exam.  All states recognize the national certification, although some states require an additional state certification prior to starting your MLT career.  The State of Illinois requires only the national certification.

A major benefit of this program is that students will have a clear and straightforward career path and the ability to find a job as soon as they graduate.  If graduates are willing to relocate for their careers, they will have an even wider variety of opportunities.  MLT graduates can find careers with hospital and clinic laboratories, veterinarian laboratories, pharmaceutical companies, public health organizations, and blood and organ banks.  According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the 2019 median salary was $53,000 per year.

The MLT profession plays an essential role in the practice of modern medicine. In fact, this practice would be impossible without the scientific testing performed daily in the medical laboratory.  According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the demand for MLTs continues to grow, proving their importance in the healthcare industry.  By 2028, the job outlook is projected to grow by 11 percent, which is much faster than the average for most occupations.  In the southern Illinois region, a large turnover in the MLT field is expected within the next 5 to 10 years.

Graduates also have the opportunity to continue their education and pursue a baccalaureate degree to become a Medical Laboratory Scientist.  This achievement allows individuals to work in laboratory management and education, as well as receive a higher salary.

While no one can deny the importance of physicians, surgeons, and nurses, there are a number of other healthcare professionals who work behind the scenes, often unnoticed, making significant contributions to healthcare. Not the least of these is the medical laboratory technician, or MLT, who conducts a variety of lab tests to help with the diagnosis, treatment, and monitoring of conditions as varied as AIDS, cancer, and diabetes.

Entry-level MLTs perform routine clinical lab tests that include hematology, clinical chemistry, microbiology, serology/immunology, and other diagnostic tests.

Once medical lab technicians have the skills needed for employment, one of the exciting aspects of their job is the ability to work in a wide variety of environments. These can range from hospital labs to research labs as well as veterinary labs and even public health facilities.

In order to become eligible for an entry-level position, prospective MLTs typically must complete a minimum of a two-year associate’s degree program. Keep reading for details on MLT programs in the U.S., including online options for working professionals.

MEDICAL LAB TECHNICIAN (MLT) DEGREE & CERTIFICATION PROGRAMS

Medical lab technicians typically need an associate’s degree to obtain entry-level work in the field, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). Most associate degree programs can be completed in about two years, but some fast-track programs are also available to students, particularly those who already have training in a related healthcare field, such as nursing. There are many different programs available in the U.S.

Below are listed just six of the medical lab technician schools offering programs, although there are many more to choose from:

Folsom Lake College – With campuses in Folsom, Placerville, and Rancho Cordova, the MLT program at this California-based school leads to an associate of science (AS) degree in medical technology and can take anywhere between 18 to 24 months to complete. The first two semesters consist of didactic coursework followed by a semester of rotations, but these rotations do not align with the school’s typical fall/spring calendar.

In all, ten med tech classes, including four practicums, are completed in the program. Sample courses include clinical microbiology, hematology, and clinical chemistry and urinalysis. Folsom Lake’s MLT degree should help prepare students to sit for the national certifying exam available through the ASCP.

  • Location: Folsom, Placerville, and Rancho Cordova, CA
  • Duration: Two years
  • Accreditation: National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS)
  • Tuition: $353 per credit

El Centro College – Located in Dallas, Texas, El Centro College offers an associate of applied science (AAS) degree in MLT but requires students to complete 39 credits in general education courses and health-related courses in the first two semesters. From there, students can apply for acceptance into the program, but admission is fairly competitive, given that there are just 20 spaces each year. The application period is January 1 to March 15 annually.

If admitted, students begin their medical lab technician coursework mid-May, finishing over a 16-month period that features lectures, labs, and clinical coursework.

  • Location: Dallas, TX
  • Duration: Two years
  • Accreditation: National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS)
  • Tuition: $200 per credit

Allegany College of Maryland – With locations in Cumberland, Maryland, and Everett and Somerset, Pennsylvania, Allegany College of Maryland gives students the opportunity to complete an MLT program in a few different ways. Allegany College offers a traditional associate’s degree route, a biotechnology degree option, a biotechnology certificate, and a fast-track MLT program for those who have already completed their general education courses.

In the traditional track, students complete 13 courses specific to MLT, one of which includes an internship. Students also take a trip to the Regional Red Cross Facility in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, during their blood banking class. Students at Allegany can join the MLT Club at the school. Students should be prepared to sit for certification through the ASCP upon completion of their medical laboratory technician school program, according to the school website.

  • Location: Cumberland, MD, and Everett and Somerset, PA
  • Duration: Two years
  • Accreditation: National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS)
  • Tuition: $314 per credit

Keiser University – The associate degree program in MLT offered through Keiser University is available at its Fort Lauderdale, Florida location. To obtain the school’s AS degree, students need to complete 73 credits in all, 26 of which are in general education (which all must be completed with a ‘C ‘or higher) and 47 of which are in the MLT major.

In the program, students learn about the lab tests and standard lab practices used in clinical chemistry, clinical microbiology, immunohematology, hematology, serology/immunology, and urinalysis. While there are 12 courses specific to the MLT program, students may need to take an additional eight credit hours in biology and eight credit hours in chemistry to sit for MLT certification.

  • Location: Fort Lauderdale, FL
  • Duration: Two years
  • Accreditation: National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS)
  • Tuition: $19,808 per year

Applicants to any MLT program should be advised that they may need to meet different eligibility requirements to be accepted into or to stay enrolled in one of the medical lab technician schools. For example, a ‘C’ average in all MLT classes might be necessary. Students might also need to supply certain items themselves, such as lab fees, a lab coat, and malpractice insurance. Students applying to programs may also be required to undergo a background clearance, a drug screening, and a physical exam to even be considered.

Students may be able to find medical lab technician schools throughout the U.S. that offer online or hybrid online programs that offer flexibility for those with work or family obligations. Often, very specific parts of these programs are offered online, typically the didactic learning components, while hands-on clinical work is still required.

Because lab and clinical experiences are often part of medical lab technician programs, students may need to be on campus or at a clinical site during some segment or segments of their learning. Here are some schools offering hybrid learning:

Arapahoe Community College – Students attending the medical lab technician program at this Littleton, Colorado-based school can work toward an associate of applied science degree over two years time, although a one-year fast-track option is also available. The lab sections that comprise the program are held Friday and Saturday afternoons, but the MLT courses are offered through hybrid instruction, meaning that many are partially online.

Students also do 13 weeks of a clinical internship, occurring at hospital clinical sites. Finally, students who are interested in a bachelor’s degree should speak to school advisors, as they have many transfer agreements in place with four-year schools.

  • Location: Littleton, CO
  • Duration: One to two years
  • Accreditation: National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS)
  • Tuition: $629.25 per credit

Columbus State Community College – Students in the MLT program at this Columbus, Ohio-based school can complete an associate degree over five semesters. In the fifth semester, students test their skills through hands-on experiences arranged in environments located within 60 miles of Columbus. All of the program’s technical lecture courses are delivered using a Web-based format while lab work is done on campus at the school’s laboratories in Union Hall.

The program provides students with essential knowledge and skills in areas like clinical chemistry, hematology, immunology, phlebotomy, and others, and also prepares them to take the certifying exam offered through the ASCP.

  • Location: Columbus, OH
  • Duration: Five semesters
  • Accreditation: National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS)

CORE & ELECTIVE COURSES IN MEDICAL LAB TECHNICIAN PROGRAMS

The educational components of a medical lab tech program should generally be similar across the board since students need to be able to complete the same types of lab tasks no matter where they are employed in the U.S. For this reason, some of the common courses featured in medical lab tech programs include:

  • Basic and intermediate lab skills
  • Blood banking
  • Hematology
  • Immunology
  • Medical terminology
  • Phlebotomy
  • Urinalysis

Students working on an associate’s degree will also need to complete a broad number of general education courses, usually in the social sciences, liberal arts, and math, or even related to career development. Coursework may include science components in anatomy, chemistry, and physiology.

In addition to general education classes, medical lab tech schools also typically require students to gain hands-on skills through clinical practicums or externships, which often occur during the final semester or semesters of a program.

MLT PROGRAM ACCREDITATION

Many medical lab technician programs in the U.S. will have accreditation through the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS), which accredits a range of allied health programs. Programmatic accreditation through NAACLS requires that a program submit a thorough self-study as well as a site visit from NAACLS experts in the MLT field. Accreditation means that the program curriculum, faculty, and facilities have been evaluated for effectiveness and learning outcomes.

As of March 2021, the NAACLS website lists 241 medical lab technician programs accredited through the institution. Results can be ordered by state or by zip code. The phone number for each school’s MLT program and the e-mail for its director are provided for each search result.

In addition to programmatic accreditation through the NAACLS, applicants should look for institutional accreditation as well. Regionally based organizations such as the Higher Learning Commission (HLC) and the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC) conduct an accreditation process that is similar to that of the NAACLS. However, unlike the NAACLS, regional accreditation will take into account the performance and facilities of an entire school.

Accreditation generally helps assure students that a specific program meets necessary education and training standards, but can also be needed to seek certification through credentialing organizations. Many licensing bodies require that applicants have completed a program that has earned some type of accreditation, although specific vary depending on the license.

CAREER OUTLOOK

Job demand for medical and clinical lab technicians is expected to grow by 7 percent from 2019 to 2029, according to the BLS (2020). This job growth is higher than the national average, which is 4 percent) and is expected to create 24,700 additional positions nationally. What are the reasons for this expected job demand?

Access to health insurance, driven by new federal legislation, is providing more people with coverage and leading to a demand for more lab personnel. Additionally, an aging Baby Boomer population should place more demands on the health services industry, as individuals and doctors turn to more laboratory workers to help diagnose diseases or conditions. In all, by 2029, the BLS predicts that 362,500 people in the U.S. will be employed as clinical and medical laboratory technicians, an increase from 337,800 in 2019.

LICENSING & CERTIFICATION OF MEDICAL LAB TECHNICIANS

Currently, only 11 states require laboratory personnel, such as medical lab technicians, to be licensed. Licensing requirements can vary by state but typically include education requirements, passing an exam, work experience, a background check, and a drug screening. A full list of states requiring licensure can be found on the American Society for Clinical Laboratory Science (ASCLS) website.

For example, the requirements to earn a medical laboratory personnel license through the Tennessee Medical Laboratory Board are:

  • Pay $50 application fee
  • Complete a NAACLS accredited formal laboratory training program
  • Hold an associate’s degree in a laboratory science
  • Proof of current national medical lab technician certification
  • Pass a background check

Certification, on the other hand, is optional although it may be required for employment and can be a step for licensure in many states. Certification can also lead to opportunities for higher wages and promotions.

“Certification translates to an advantage in the workplace,” the AMT website reads. “Many employers now require certification because they know that individuals who are certified are committed to their profession and to quality patient care.”

Here are three of the major certifications available to medical lab technicians:

AMERICAN MEDICAL TECHNOLOGIST (AMT) CERTIFICATION
