Excellence in research and teaching requires solid financial support. That’s why at York, all qualified graduate students receive a guaranteed funding package for the duration of their program with their offer of admission.

In the 2019-2020 academic year, York graduate students receive a standard domestic funding package of $23,891 towards doctoral degree programs and $11,000 towards master’s degree programs.

Often our students’ funding exceeds the standard amount:

  • In 2017-18, York doctoral students averaged $27,522 and master’s students averaged $17,096 in funding from all sources.

Funding and training opportunities come in the form of teaching assistantships, fellowships, scholarships, research assistantships, graduate assistantships and York Graduate Scholarships.

We also encourage and support students in their applications for prestigious external provincial and national awards. Together with additional York awards and funding, external scholarships are a measure of academic excellence, and they allow students the time to focus on their research and make progress in their studies.

Application Fees

Application fees are determined by the individual program you apply to, but are typically $100 CDN. Please visit the graduate program website to which you have applied for more information.

Fees and Tuition

Academic fees are charged on either a per-course or per-program basis, depending on the Faculty or program in which you enrol, and in most cases include tuition costs as well as supplementary fees. Additional fees may include health plans, the YU-card (where applicable) and associated course and program fees. Please note that course and program fees are subject to approval by York’s Board of Governors in accordance with the fees guidelines set by the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities and are subject to change.

Funds from scholarships, awards and bursaries are applied directly to tuition (if applicable) and other student fees owing. After tuition (if applicable) and other charges to a student’s account have been cleared, award recipients who have a credit remaining on their account will be issued a refund. Refund cheques are routinely processed in November, March, and late June.

Please visit Student Financial Services – Fees for more information.
