Founded in 1810 in New Haven, Connecticut as The Medical Institution of Yale College, Yale School of Medicine formally opened its doors in 1813. Over the last two centuries, Yale has pioneered numerous medical breakthroughs: Yale physicians and researchers were first in the United States to use the X-ray, antibiotics, and chemotherapy, and also the first to identify Lyme disease. At the Yale School of Medicine, students are not given grades or a class rank for the first two years of education. To encourage students to take responsibility for their medical school education, preclinical classes are often small seminars in which attendance isn’t taken and tests are optional and self-directed.

The School of Medicine is affiliated with highly ranked institutions including the Yale-New Haven Hospital. All medical students must complete a thesis on original research in order to graduate. For research help, students can go to their personal librarian, a resource assigned at the beginning of a student’s time in medical school to help them navigate through their four years of education. Students can enroll in an optional fifth year of school if they want to do more research or study or work abroad.

Budget Notes

Federal regulations require that we use a single student budget for all students. A federally-established Standard Maintenance Allowance will be added for married students and/or students with dependents.

Adjustments will be made to the standard single student budget for insurance and origination fees for Federal Direct (Unsubsidized) Loan.

The personal expense allowance, intended for laundry, clothing, entertainment, etc., assumes a modest level of spending during the year.

Enrollment Fee

Upon acceptance to the Program, the applicant is required to remit $1,000 to secure his/her place in the incoming class. This fee is non-refundable. The fee defrays disability insurance costs and other essential medical insurance costs paid by the program. Please note that these medical expenses are independent of those paid by the student through Student Financial Accounts and Services.

Pre-Medical Requirements

The minimum requirements for admission to the first-year class are:

1. Attendance for three academic years, or the equivalent, at an accredited college, university, or institute of technology.
2. Satisfactory completion of the following courses, including laboratory work:
   • General Biology or Zoology (2 semesters)
   • General Chemistry (2 semesters)
   • Organic Chemistry (1 semester)
   • Biochemistry (1 semester – laboratory recommended, but not required)
   • General Physics (2 semesters)

Acceptable courses in these subjects are usually given three to four semester hours of academic credit per semester.

Pre-medical courses must be completed in a U.S., U.K., or Canadian college or university. U.S. Community College courses are acceptable, provided that the courses include laboratory work and are comparable in content to courses at four-year colleges, universities, or institutes of technology.

U.S. Advanced Placement credits from high school do not themselves satisfy premedical requirements, but advanced college, university courses or institute of technology courses (for which students are made eligible by AP credits) may be substituted for introductory-level courses in each of these subjects.

The Admissions Committee has no preference as to a major field for undergraduate study and leaves this decision to students with the advice that they advance beyond the elementary level in the field of their choice rather than pursue an undirected program. A liberal education is the supporting structure for graduate study, and must encompass understanding of the humanities, arts, and society as well as the scientific foundations of technology and civilization. The student of medicine enters a profession closely allied to the natural sciences and must be prepared to cope with chemistry and biology at a graduate level. Students entering college with a strong background in the sciences, as demonstrated by advanced placement, are encouraged to substitute advanced science courses for the traditional requirements listed above.

The School of Medicine is committed to providing as much scholarship aid as possible to students in need. Most School of Medicine scholarship funds come from income generated by the school’s endowment. Students may also receive scholarships specifically defined to cover their education costs, such as the MD/PhD program, an Armed Forces Scholarship, the National Health Service Corps Scholarship or the Jack Kent Cooke Scholarship. Such scholarships increase the student’s available resources, which in turn decreases the student’s need.

Scholarships from other outside sources will reduce first the parent and student contributions and then the loan obligations in the financial aid package, starting with the loan with the least favorable terms. Only after all loan obligations have been eliminated, will the outside scholarship affect the Yale scholarship award.
