TUITION + FEES
University tuition and fees consist of tuition and required fees, as well as a student activities fee. The University Board of Visitors sets tuition and fees annually. University tuition and fees are subject to change.
Approved TUITION + FEE RATES are published annually by the UVA Office of Financial Planning and Analysis (FP&A).
UVA’s Office of Student Financial Services provides the ESTIMATED GRADUATE COST OF ATTENDANCE which includes an estimate of living expenses, books and supplies. The Estimated Graduate Cost of Attendance can be added to the tuition and fees to calculate an overall estimate of the total Cost of Attendance for one academic year.

FUNDING OPTIONS
Graduate students may be eligible for the following types of funding:
DEPARTMENTAL AID
Departmental aid is merit-based funding (scholarships, fellowships, etc.) awarded from individual departments based on the strength of your application. All graduate applicants are considered for departmental aid as part of the application review process. There are no additional aid applications necessary for entering graduate students. Departmental aid, if offered, is awarded on a recurring basis for the duration of the recipient’s period of study provided the student maintains full-time enrollment and good standing. Awarding details for incoming students are included in the offer of admission.
In addition, UVA School of Architecture has a number of SCHOLARSHIPS, FELLOWSHIP + AWARDS it offers to continuing students annually based on a competitive application process.
These include, but are not limited to, independent travel scholarships, funding for research and thesis development, and financial assistance to attend summer programs.
These opportunities are awarded based on a competitive proposal and application process typically due in the middle of the spring semester each year.
STUDENT EMPLOYMENT
The UVA School of Architecture provides its students with opportunities to apply for paid assistantships (instructor assistants, research assistants, and staff assistants) at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Please note that some positions are restricted to students who qualify for Federal Work-Study (FWS). FWS is federal financial aid that is based on financial need and must be earned through student employment. Please refer to the FEDERAL FINANCIAL AID section below for more information.
FEDERAL FINANCIAL AID
U.S. Citizens and Permanent Residents may also APPLY FOR FEDERAL FINANCIAL AID by submitting the FAFSA. Graduate students are awarded federal aid in the form of loans and/or work study. Federal aid at UVA is coordinated by Student Financial Services (SFS); additional information about applying for and receiving federal aid is available on the SFS website.
FEDERAL LOANS
Graduate student loans are not need-based; all graduate students who are eligible for federal aid may accept up to $20,500 in Federal Direct Unsubsidized Student Loans and a Graduate PLUS loan for up to the difference between the student’s total Cost of Attendance and any other funding (including Direct Student Loans and Departmental Aid). FEDERAL WORK STUDY
Graduate students who demonstrate financial need may also be considered for Federal Work-Study eligibility (FWS) upon request. To be considered for FWS, choose this option on the FAFSA. For information about the upcoming meeting of the UVA Board of Visitors on March 5, 2021, please see the linked notice regarding tuition and fees, published in accordance with §23.1-307(D), (E), and (F) of the Code of Virginia requiring 30 days notification.
Please note that if you leave the University for any reason and return in a later semester, you will be subject to the tuition and fee rates established by the Board of Visitors for the academic year in which you return, based upon your academic level upon your return. Your school of enrollment can confirm your academic level at the time of your return to the University.
Undergraduate Living Expenses
The following estimated expenses apply to students in any undergraduate program. They are listed as “Additional Categories” in the subsequent estimated Cost of Attendance tables for each program. Please note that independent undergraduate student budgets differ by the inclusion of a health insurance amount for the year.
The personal expenses estimates shown below reflect modest and restrained expense allowances for University of Virginia students. Some students will spend more than the estimated amounts while others will spend less, depending on individual choices and circumstances. Eligibility for financial aid, however, is based on the standard estimated allowance, not on individual preferences and spending habits.
An important note on possible adjustments to cost of attendance items for spring 2021:
- If a student has indicated they will be living away from Charlottesville and will not have housing costs for the spring 2021 term, the comprehensive fee, housing, and travel cost of attendance line items will be reduced accordingly. Students receiving financial aid will therefore have a reduction in their financial need and a corresponding adjustment in their financial aid offer. Because University grants and scholarships are the “last dollar” items added to the financial aid offer, they will be the first items adjusted on the financial aid offer.
- If a student has indicated they will be in Charlottesville (or away from Charlottesville but with housing costs) for the spring 2021 term, the student should see no change to their cost of attendance line items or their financial aid.

Fellowships, Scholarships and Stipends
Graduate students may receive fellowships or scholarships from their department or school. Fellowships and scholarships are unearned aid (no work or repayment requirement). Although some use the terms “scholarship” and “fellowship” interchangeably, the University does make a distinction:
Scholarships are awarded to students in the Darden School of Business, the McIntire School of Commerce, the School of Law, or the School of Medicine and are often named (e.g., The Thomas Jefferson Scholarship).
Fellowships are awarded to graduate students in all other schools.
Fellowships and scholarships may be awarded in the form of direct aid that is provided directly to the student or indirect aid that is awarded on the student’s behalf to cover education costs or both.
Stipends
Fellowships or scholarships awarded as direct aid are usually in the form of a stipend. Stipends are an amount given directly to a student to support the pursuit of study or training. Stipend awards can be a one-time only award, but are usually provided monthly over a period of time.

- Signing up for direct deposit is a safe and easy way to receive your refunds more quickly!
- International students not claiming Treaty Benefits will have 14% deducted for taxes prior to refund generation.
- Withholding for tax purposes is not done for U.S. students and green card holders

Tuition Fees Limited – an award that covers a portion of tuition and fees in an amount specified by your department.
Health Insurance Subsidy – a payment made by a school or unit of the University to the University on behalf of a graduate student. A graduate student must be offered the health insurance subsidy if he or she receives at least $5,000 in wages as a GTA or GRA over the course of the fiscal year. Application Deadlines
Each department may have an application deadline earlier than the final Graduate School application deadline for each semester. You should check with the department to assure that your application is submitted and all materials are received by the department application deadline.
We encourage applicants to submit their complete applications, including supplemental materials, early to allow sufficient time for application processing. International applicants must be accepted by the Graduate School no later than May 15 for fall and October 15 for spring to allow sufficient time for immigration processes and travel.
