Eligibility
The UCLA David Geffen School of Medicine welcomes applicants from US citizens, Canadian citizens as well as international students. In terms of educational qualifications, a minimum of a bachelor’s degree with three years of coursework from an accredited US or Canadian university is required for all students. Academic Curriculum
UCLA launched its redesigned curriculum to foster a more innovative teaching strategy, incorporate new content and provide greater flexibility in the student learning journey. This redesigned curriculum is focused on research, education, advocacy, and a humanistic approach to medicine. It includes the following components:
- Base Camp (Year 1): This is designed to prepare first year students for their pre-clerkship studies. It centers concepts such as Essential Basic Science, Social Determinants of Health, Basic/Introductory Clinical skills, and Ethics/Professionalism.
- Scientific Foundations of Medicine (Year 1/2): This component takes students through the basis of disease through in-depth classroom learning as well as clinical applications. Students will learn about Anatomy, Pharmacology, Immunology, Biochemistry, Molecular & Cellular Biology, and many more traditional foundational concepts as well as newer subjects such as mental health, nutrition etc.
- Foundations of Practice (Year 1/2): This component focuses on training students to provide excellent clinical care. Apart from the main areas of study such as interpersonal communication skills, clinical examination skills, medical interviews and clinical reasoning, the curriculum also covers emerging areas, for example, population health, bioethics, inter-professional teamwork etc.
- Early Authentic Clinical Experience (Year 1): This component immerses students in clinical experience situations so they can apply their foundational concepts in the real world. Students will get a chance to play different health care roles such as patient navigator or intake in a setting such as a free clinic or community-based clinic.
- Clerkships (Year 2/3): These are the core clerkships that allow students to complete clinical rotations in different specialties, including Psychiatry, Pediatrics, Medicine, Neurology, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Family Medicine and Surgery.

The Dean’s Leadership in Health and Science Scholarship
Through the generosity of Irma and Norman Switzer, the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA has established the Dean’s Leadership in Health and Science Scholarship, which provides full tuition and stipend support for students to pursue a dual degree program or research opportunity without incurring additional debt. For those pursuing research, the scholarship provides a full-year stipend equivalent to that offered by many external grants of this type; students seeking an additional degree receive this stipend plus full tuition and fees.
The Dean’s Leadership in Health and Science Scholarship represents an important step toward our goal of supporting students who wish to supplement their outstanding medical training with complementary activities that channel their passions and enable them to become future leaders in health and science.
The David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA Financial Aid Office emails information/instructions on applying for financial aid to all entering medical students who have been accepted to the David Geffen School of Medicine.
Medical student financial aid applicants are invited to apply for need-based scholarships, in addition to student loans, by providing both student and parent income and asset information on the financial aid application. This practice of utilizing parent financial information to calculate need allows for the equitable awarding of the David Geffen School of Medicine’s need-based aid.
The L.A. Care “Elevating the Safety Net” Scholarship Program
L.A. Care launched the Elevating the Safety Net initiative on July 19, 2018. It was an important day not just for the start of a new project — it was a moment to announce the first eight recipients of full medical school scholarships. The scholarship program component of Elevating the Safety Net relieves future physicians of the enormous debt that is often a reality for community-minded physicians and that can force them to choose high-profit positions over service in low-income areas. “Most med students say they chose the field because they wanted to help people, but altruism takes a major hit when students leave med school with a loan payment the size of a mortgage,” said L.A. Care CEO John Baackes. “These scholarships relieve them of that burden.” The scholarships are unique in their support of students who are interested in pursuing primary care and serving underserved communities. The scholarship provides financial support for four years of medical school including the cost of tuition and an annual living stipend.

The UCLA Leaders of Tomorrow Scholarship pays full tuition for select students, as well as a one-time $5,000 research stipend. The award, created in 2012 by an anonymous donor and since supported by the school’s alumni and friends, gives aspiring physicians, scientists, and community change-agents the gift of pursuing their dreams unburdened by debt. The scholarship is renewed annually for four years based on satisfactory academic performance and participation in program activities. All applicants to the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA are automatically considered for the UCLA Leaders of Tomorrow Scholarship through the application-and-interview process.

Thanks to an unprecedented gift from David Geffen, The David Geffen Medical Scholarships cover the cost of instruction for up to 20% of entering medical students per year. The David Geffen Medical Scholarships will position recipients to immediately pursue careers in clinical practice, teaching, research and public service, giving them the tools to become leaders in health care, in the community, in academic medicine and in health care policy – without the economic burden that often restricts the choices of many young physicians and scientists.
