Why Study for an MBA in China?

The answer is simple: China holds a large, if not the largest, potential for future business in the world.

“International MBA students in China have many chances to meet the current Chinese business elite and get connected to the future leaders who are effectively their classmates,” adds Yichi Zhang, Associate Dean and MBA Director at Guanghua School of Management, Peking University.

“China’s boom over the last decade, and continued consistency during the Global Financial Crisis clearly illustrates the impact which the country already has and will continue to have on the world. Having a China focused MBA from a leading business school puts graduates in a unique position to become a China expert for both organizations in China looking to do business overseas and those international organizations looking to do business in China,” argues Patrick Groom, International Admission & Placement Manager at the Cheung Kong Graduate School of Business.

“The economy of China is one of the most dynamic economies of the world. Studying in this kind of an environment is beneficial if you want to grow professionally in a fast growing country,” advises Sankar Mohan from India, an MBA Ambassador for Cheung Kong Graduate School of Business.

Top Business Schools In China

MBA schools in the PRC are a young breed compared to schools in the US. Their development is closely linked to China’s transformation to a market economy in the early 1980. At the time the wind of change also swept through the field of education and many state universities set up business schools.

The A-list of China’s top business schools today is part of the country’s most prestigious universities. In the top league are the School of Management at Tsinghua University, the Guanghua School of Management at Peking University (PKU) and the School of Management at Fudan University. Their challengers, some private schools, are still few in numbers. CEIBS and Cheung Kong Graduate School of Business are the leading independent players.

These five schools are featured in the QS Global Top Business Schools 2009. Beyond that, however, are some other excellent choices such as the Beijng International MBA (BiMBA) offered by the National School of Development (NSD), the economic think-tank of the Chinese Government, at Peking University.

Tsinghua University Beijing, China

Beijing’s Tsinghua is a prestige name in China and beyond. The school’s full-time MBA is taught with MIT Sloan in the US and can be completed in just one year, providing a quick return on investment, plus a truly global perspective. The business school, whose course is taught in both Chinese and English, was the first school in the Chinese mainland to be accredited by AACSB.

CEIBS China Europe International Business School – Shanghai Campus Shanghai, China

Shanghai’s CEIBS has had a stellar past few years. It has rocketed up the Financial Times Global MBA ranking, achieving fifth place in 2019, its best ever performance. That puts CEIBS, which was only established 1994, in the very top tier alongside big-name US brands like Harvard, which pioneered the MBA degree about a century ago.

Sun Yat-Sen University – Sun Yat-Sen Business School Guangzhou, China

The Sun Yat-Sen Business School is accredited by the three major bodies and is ranked by the Economist. The international MBA program is taught in English and runs for 24 months. Program fees are a bargain compared with some bigger-brand competitors.

The Chinese University of Hong Kong – CUHK Business School Hong Kong, Hong Kong (PRC)

CUHK is one of the longest-established business schools in Asia. Its strong and connective alumni network numbers 34,000 globally, including 6,600 MBA alumni. The combination of brand, prestige and networks give CUHK MBA graduates strong employment outcomes: more than 90 per cent of them land a job within three months and the average class salary is nearly $116,000.

Tongji University – School of Economics and Management Shanghai, China

Triple-accredited Tongji runs a 24-month international MBA taught in English and costing about $45,000. It is open to students from all over the world, with the diverse cohort enriching the learning experience. What’s more, students can go on exchange to more than 50 other business schools to further hone their global management expertise.

Peking University (Beida) – Guanghua School of Management Beijing, China

Guanghua is accredited by both AACSB and EQUIS. It benefits from its brand, being based on the beautiful campus of Peking University, China’s oldest educational institution. The full-time MBA focuses on providing a China-centric lens on doing business, which will give anyone who wants to work in the region an edge. With many markets and companies looking to China for growth, knowledge of the Chinese business landscape could serve many people well.

Shanghai Jiao Tong University – Antai College of Economics and Management Shanghai, China

SJTU Antai was the first business school in China to be triple-accredited by AACSB, EQUIS, and AMBA. SJTU Antai is also the only business school in China to be situated in in the booming commercial district of Xujiahui in downtown Shanghai, one of China’s key business capitals, which provides easy access to top corporate recruiters.

The University of Hong Kong – HKU Business School Hong Kong, Hong Kong (PRC)

The Economist has ranked the University of Hong Kong’s MBA as the best program in Asia for eight consecutive years — an impressive feat, and 25th globally. The school’s MBA also scored particularly highly on the FT’s specialty ranking for finance, suggesting career prospects in that field are excellent.

HKUST Hong Kong University of Science and Technology Business School Hong Kong, Hong Kong (PRC)

In Hong Kong, HKUST is one of the best business schools. It is ranked 18th globally by the FT and the school is ranked similarly highly for the quality of its research. HKUST was also the first business school in the region to achieved accreditation by both the US-based AACSB International and Europe-focused EQUIS awarding bodies.

Fudan University – School of Management Shanghai, China

Fudan in Shanghai boasts an enviable accolade: the highest increase on pre-MBA pay among FT-ranked schools. Alumni three years from graduation increased their salary by 195 percent to more than $110,000. What’s more, Fudan alumni ranked third in terms of career progress and were the sixth most likely to be hired three months after graduation, with the employment rate 97 percent.

©shansekala—China offers exciting career growth opportunities for business school grads

A career in China offers unprecedented velocity and the excitement of disruptive innovation.

Professor Kar Yan Tam, dean of Hong Kong’s HKUST Business School, says “China will remain the world’s major growth engine in the years ahead.”

After a career in China? Here’s nine business schools in both Asia and North America that have built substantial networks within the Chinese business sector:

Asia

1. Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST)

HKUST is one of 11 schools participating in the Graduate Management Admission Council’s ‘Study in China’ initiative, a plan to open China’s business schools to international interest.

The school’s dean says students at HKUST “not only receive the best international business education to develop a global perspective, but also look for opportunities to experience the vitality of China.”

2. Nanyang Business School, Singapore

Nicole Tee, director of graduate studies at Nanyang Business School, says: “NTU Nanyang MBA is widely recognized as offering one of the top MBAs in the world, providing a transformational impact on executives early in their careers.” She adds, “Leveraging Nanyang Technological University’s strength and reputation in Asia and technology, graduates are well-equipped with the success factors needed for the 4th industrial revolution – Global Skills, Agile Thinking, and Digital Capabilities.”

3. Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) Business School

Hong Kong is often called the Gateway to China and CUHK is recognized as offering the first MBA program in the region, ranked number two in Asia according to the Financial Times Top MBAs for Finance 2017.

CUHK Business School is one of the first two business schools in Asia accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB). CUHK boasts over 500 inbound exchange students each academic year and that number is expected to grow.

4. Cheung Kong Graduate School of Business (CKGSB), Beijing

China’s leading independent business school, CKGSB offers unique programs to its student body, 25% of which is comprised of international MBA students.

The Financial Times reports that based on self-reported salary information in Chinese RMB in 2016 (one-year post-MBA) and converted using PPP to USD$ figures, CKGSB MBA graduates made an annual median salary of $132,196, among the best paid graduates in the region.

5. China Europe International Business School (CEIBS), Shanghai

CEIBS boasts a rapidly growing American presence in its student body. Only 7% of CEIBS students in 2005 were from the United States. In 2013, however, approximately 20% of the students enrolled in the CEIBS MBA program were from the US.

According to Dingkun Ge, a former associate professor of strategy and entrepreneurship, “People think all the action is in China and young professionals want to go where the action is.” Other major advantages of CEIBS include its substantial alumni network, which Dingkun describes as a “powerful resource.”

6. Beijing International MBA (BIMBA) at Peking University (PKU)

Situated in the heart of China’s capital, the Beijing International MBA gives students direct access to the global force that is the Chinese economy. The program is hosted by the National School of Development (NSD) at PKU, the leading university think tank in China. Students are exposed to China’s most recent policy developments, and understanding national policy is key to making a success of your career in business in China.

Students also have two joint degrees to choose from. A part-time MBA between PKU and Vlerick Business School, in Belgium, or an MBA between PKU and University College London (UCL), giving them the exposure to East and West that they need to bridge relations between the two.

“Right now, China’s economy is becoming more and more influential in the world economy,” says professor Yao Yang, dean of the NSD . “Chinese companies have become more competitive internationally but also domestically. Many Chinese companies are beginning to hire foreign workers.”

North America

7. Rutgers University School of Business

Rutgers’ strong internship placement, which has hovered “at or near 100% since 2007,” can launch graduates eastward. Lei Lei, dean of Rutgers Business School, says: “[Rutgers] students gain valuable US corporate working experience that companies in China respect.

“Our effort to instill our unique brand—Resilient, Resourceful, and Responsible—has given our students a strong work ethic and professionalism.”

8. Stanford University Graduate School of Business

Kirsten Moss, assistant dean and director of MBA admissions and financial aid at Stanford Graduate School of Business, says the Stanford MBA Program “prepares you for meaningful and principled leadership in all parts of the world, including China.”

She adds, “The curriculum integrates the latest business research and best practices with experiential learning and work programs, such as the Stanford Tsinghua Exchange Program (STEP), student-led global study trips, Global Management Immersion experience (GMIX) summer internships, and independent study opportunities.”

9. UCLA Anderson

UCLA Anderson boasts an alumni network in Greater China that include graduates at tech and retail giants like Google. The school offers unfettered access to the tech industry via its Technology Specialization, the Easton Technology Management Center, Anderson Tech-Business Association, and its proximity to Silicon Beach.

On-campus connections with China are available at the Wilbur K. Woo Greater China Business Conference, which brings together thought-leaders from the US and China to discuss the future of US-Sino relations and its development across different industries.
