NYU Psychology
NYU psychology majors graduate with an excellent academic foundation in psychology and are well-prepared for graduate study in the field. Graduates are accepted by top programs throughout the country. Others go on to careers in law, business, medicine, and education.
Generally, graduate schools in psychology want to see an average 3.0 cumulative GPA. While many graduate schools in psychology will not consider a student with less than a 3.0 GPA, competitive GRE scores override a lower GPA.
If you want to advance in the field of psychology or business, then yes, a master’s is worth it. However, if you don’t have a strong motivation, then the trials of a graduate degree may not be for you. You should talk to others in the field and check your own motivations prior to enrolling.
FLEXIBILITY
The flexibility of the M.A. Program suits a broad range of students. Some students have decided on a particular focus when they enter our program, and take courses that fit these interests. However, students are not required to choose an area of focus. Some students enter our program with the intention of exploring the field of psychology. In these cases, students often take a variety of electives in order to see where their interests lie.

Curriculum Opportunities
Our program requires the completion of 12 courses and either a thesis or comprehensive exam. Students are required to take Statistics, Research Methods, and 3 core Psychology courses. Of the remaining seven electives, three must be taken within the Psychology Department, while up to four can be taken elsewhere at NYU, with advisor permission. As the largest private university in the U.S., NYU has many schools, centers, and departments, and courses from outside the Psychology Department can broaden students’ perspectives. Students select courses in consultation with MA Program advisors.
NYU Psychology Master’s Acceptance Rate
Classified as “more selective,” New York University is an admission gamble with a 33 percent acceptance rate. Freshmen pursuing the Psychology B.A. need to be finishing a high school diploma or graduating with a GED. Following a college-prep curriculum with a 4 or 5 on the AP Psychology exam is preferred. First-year students often receive straight As with an average secondary GPA of 3.7. Admitted undergrads also reach a mean SAT score of 1410 or ACT score of 30. Transfers can provide up to 64 credits from regionally accredited colleges graded “C” or better with a minimum 2.5 GPA.
How hard is it to be accepted in NYU for graduate school? If by hard you mean an acceptance is between 5% and 10%, then NYU is hard. The PhD in Counseling Psychology seeks applicants with a bachelor’s or master’s in psychological sciences and significant research experience. Doctoral candidates typically hold a cumulative GPA above 3.5 and GRE scores above the 70th percentile. International students must show English proficiency with a minimum IELTS score of 7.5 or equivalent.
Job Prospect and Salary
Employment of psychologists is projected to grow 3 percent from 2019 to 2029, about as fast as the average for all occupations. Job prospects should be best for those who have a doctoral degree in an applied specialty.

Tuition and Financial Aid
Educational costs are assessed each term and are based on the number of credits a student enrolls in per term. A moderate increase in tuition and registration/service fees is to be expected each academic year. The Board of Trustees at NYU reserves the right to alter the schedule of fees without notice.
For the 2021–2022 academic year (beginning with the September 2021 cohort), tuition and fees are as follows:

In addition to tuition, students must also pay registration and student service fees. Please note that fees are calculated per term. All Counseling@NYU students are also required to attend one immersion at our New York City campus and are responsible for travel and lodging costs.

Federal Direct Unsubsidized Loan: Most graduate students are potentially eligible to receive up to $20,500 per academic year.
Federal Direct Graduate PLUS Loan: This credit-based loan is a supplement to the Federal Direct Unsubsidized Loan. The maximum loan amount is the student’s cost of attendance minus any other financial aid received.
Counseling@NYU applicants may be considered for scholarships, based upon their application for admission. No separate application for scholarships is necessary. These scholarships will be awarded to a select number of aspiring school and mental health counselors committed to making a difference in their community.
