Last Updated on July 30, 2023

The Norwegian School of Economics is a business school situated in Bergen, Norway. Established in 1936, NHH is one of the country’s two umbrella institutions for research and education within the fields of economics and business administration. In international ranking surveys from 2009 to 2010, NHH received high marks among European programs in these fields.

The Ph.D. programme in Economics at NHH is a structured course of studies lasting three or four years. The programme comprises two parts, course work and the dissertation which is written under the supervision of a faculty member from the Department of Economics at NHH. During the process of writing the dissertation students are required to spend six months abroad in order to collect data and receive supervision. The length of your stay abroad depends on where you do your fieldwork and whether it’s single-country or multiple-country research. All applicants need to have completed MPhil in Economics before starting a PhD program at NHH.

BEHAVIOURAL ECONOMICS

The research group The Choice Lab studies economic and moral choices by conducting experiments that are implemented in controlled laboratory or field settings.

The main research question is how individual choices are affected by moral considerations, in particular fairness considerations. The research group has looked at issues of fairness and responsibility, distributive justice, and perceptions of inequality. The Choice Lab is especially interested in the question why some inequalities are perceived as fair and others not.

The Choice Lab uses a wide set of experiments including randomized control trials, large-scale incentivized experiments with nationally representative populations, neuroeconomic experiments and survey experiments. The experiments are conducted, both in developed and developing countries.

The Choice Lab works closely together with experimental researchers and behavioural economic groups from all of over the world.
