4 Best Medical Schools in Georgia
Looking for some medical school options? If you live in Georgia or if you’d like to live there, this state has some great medical schools. Most of them are private, but this will help you increase your chances of enrolling if you are not a Georgia resident. Admissions at the only public medical school here are highly competitive, especially because it has very affordable tuition prices when compared to other schools. Medical Schools in Georgia
1. The Medical College of Georgia in Augusta University
We start the list with the only public medical school in Georgia. Founded in 1828, the Medical College of Georgia (MCG) is one of the oldest medical schools in the U.S. It has a wide variety of departments, many research and affiliated centers, and it offers clinical training outside the main campus of Augusta University.
The MCG has 22 departments and dual degree programs, which combine M.D. and Ph.D., M.D. and MBA, and M.D. and MPH. First-year and second-year students study at the main campus, but there are many regional campuses available for the clinical training of third-year and fourth-year students. These are located in the cities of Rome, Savannah, Albany, and Brunswick. The MCG also partnered with the University of Georgia, and they have a campus in Athens, where students can complete their four-year program.
As a public medical school, tuition here is much more affordable than in other universities. Tuition for in-state students is of $14,179 and for out-of-state students is of $28,358. Considering that tuition can be of over $40,000 in other medical schools, this is a great price!
However, consider that public universities prefer admitting in-state students, which means that if you live outside of Georgia, your chances of enrolling reduce dramatically. In 2018, there were 3,156 applicants and only 230 were admitted. From those admitted, only 5 were out-of-state students!
Besides doing your application through the AMCAS platform, taking the MCAT exam, having the entire prerequisite courses, and submitting your recommendation letters and explaining your experience in the medical field, there are some extra steps you must follow at the MCG.
In order to be admitted, you must take the CASPer exam, which is about personal and professional characteristics. They also a have Multiple Mini-Interview format, in which competitive applicants will go through eight short interviews. 2. Emory School of Medicine
Located in Atlanta, Georgia, this private medical school has some program characteristics that make it unique! It offers a wide variety of dual programs, which combine M.D. and Masters in Business Administration, M.D. and Master’s in Clinical Research, M.D. and Master’s in Bioethics, and M.D. and Master’s in Public Health. It also has an M.D. and Ph.D. program, but the Ph.D. can be completed in other affiliated universities.
Unlike other medical schools, students here cover foundational education in 1.5 years, so they can start clerkships at the end of the second year. This way, students have a more extensive clinical training.
Also, during orientation, students are assigned to one of the four societies of the school which has a Small Group Advisor. The group meets twice a week to cover important topics like communication skills between patients and physicians, and the Advisor becomes a mentor for students throughout the four-year program.
Admissions are highly competitive at the Emory School of Medicine. In 2018, they received almost 10,000 applicants. 6,946 of those applications were completed but only 669 people were interviewed. In the end, 138 students were admitted.

3. Mercer University School of Medicine (MUSM)
The Mercer University School of Medicine (MUSM) was founded in 1982 and has many program options for prospective students. Besides the M.D. degree programs, they also offer Master’s in Family Therapy, Master’s in Public Health, M.S. in Biomedical Sciences, M.S. in Anesthesia, Ph.D. in Clinical Medical Psychology, among others.
MUSM has three campuses. The oldest one is Macon campus, which opened when the university was established. In 2008, the Savannah campus was opened. Students can complete their first two years in any of these campuses. In 2012, a third campus was opened in Columbus. Students can complete their clinical training (the third and fourth year of the program) on this campus.
As other medical schools in Georgia, the program divides into two phases: the first two years focus on foundational education, and the last two years focus in clerkships and clinical rotations. However, the curriculum of the first two years has a Patient-Based Learning approach, in which small groups have regular discussions and problem-based classes.
The admission process at MUSM is similar to the process in other medical schools. Applicants must complete the online process by taking the MCAT, submitting the recommendation letters, having the required premedical courses, and explaining any previous medical experience.

4. Morehouse School of Medicine (MSM)
The Morehouse School of Medicine (MSM) is known for its ethnic diversity, as it always accepts a good number of people of color and focuses on education in medicine that addresses the medical issues of urban and rural areas.
Besides the MD program, MSM has a few dual programs, which include M.D. and Ph.D. in Biomedical Sciences, M.D and MPH (Public Health), and M.D./MSCR and MSCR/Ph.D.
This medical school in Georgia also has some innovative options, like online programs and expanded programs. Online programs include an Executive Master of Public Health (eMPH), a Certificate in the Process of Drug Development, and a Master of Science in Biotechnology.
They also have a Columbus Campus Expanded Program. If students have to perform any apprenticeship or clinical rotation, they can be made at a convenient location near the student.

Students applying to medical schools in the United States have to decide which state they want to live in for four years of their lives. Georgia’s excellent selection of medical schools, favorable weather, and diverse population make it an excellent place to train as a physician.
Additionally, attending medical school in Georgia carries the benefit of a low cost of living. Average rental prices in the state are 78% lower than the United States overall. Therefore, prospective medical students looking to decrease their medical education costs might want to begin their search in Georgia.
This article serves as a guide to the top medical schools in the “Peach State,” based on the most recent rankings by US News. It also informs students on each school’s mission and strategies to obtain a coveted admissions letter to each program. All of these featured schools have different values and philosophies on medical education. Students must consider which institution will best guide them on their unique path toward becoming a physician.

Mercer University School of Medicine (Macon, GA)
Mercer University, located in Macon, Savannah, and Columbus, was established in 1982 to increase rural Georgia’s medical care quality. Mercer takes this mission so seriously that all students wishing to apply must be Georgia residents for at least 12 months. This residency requirement is a significant advantage for applicants who are Georgia residents because it virtually eliminates out-of-state competition.
Students who are independent learners may be a good fit for the Mercer University School of Medicine. Mercer implements a self-directed learning approach instead of traditional lectures. The problem-based learning that Mercer fosters involves getting exposure to real-world dilemmas and using those experiences to guide academic instruction. Due to this model of education, Mercer students receive clinical experiences beginning in their first semester.
Graduates from Mercer’s School of Medicine take pride in caring for the state’s medically underserved populations. In fact, Mercer ranks 2nd in the nation for graduates practicing in rural areas and working in primary care within Georgia. Mercer is known for accepting students who exemplify their mission of caring for the medically underserved. To get accepted into this medical school in Georgia, applicants should highlight their experiences working at free clinics or shadowing primary care providers.
Morehouse School of Medicine (Atlanta, GA)
Morehouse School of Medicine was founded in 1975 and is one of three historically black medical schools in the United States. This medical school’s mission is to prepare future physicians to provide quality care for people of color in urban and rural Georgia. Morehouse focuses on the importance of preventative care, with most MSM graduates serving as primary care physicians.
Morehouse School of Medicine strives to increase the number of Black doctors entering the medical field. Although the school already prides itself on being third in the country for the number of medical degrees awarded to Black doctors, they refuse to stop there. In December of 2020, Morehouse partnered with CommonSpirit Health and pledged to spend $100 million recruiting and educating more Black doctors to address racial health disparities in the United States. Although Morehouse is a historically black medical school, it accepts students of any racial or ethnic background as long as they have a passion for diversity and inclusion.
Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine (Suwanee & Moultrie, GA)
As one of the nation’s oldest medical schools, the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine prepares its graduates to provide “whole person” care to a diverse patient population. At PCOM, future osteopathic physicians learn to integrate traditional western medicine with complementary therapies and lifestyle modifications.
While their main campus is located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, PCOM Georgia is located in Suwanee, and PCOM South Georgia is located in Moultrie. These campuses were added to the university to address the severe physician shortage in the South. PCOM Georgia was created in 2005, while the Moultrie location accepted their first class of DO students in 2019. Both Georgia branches offer the doctor of osteopathic medicine degree.
Osteopathic medicine is a fast-growing healthcare profession in the United States, and 25 percent of all medical students are enrolled in a DO program. Osteopathic physicians are licensed to provide medications, perform surgery, diagnose, and treat patients the same way a medical doctor can. PCOM is passionate about osteopathic philosophy and recruits students who align with this ideology.

2. Augusta University Medical College of Georgia
Augusta University, also known as the Medical College of Georgia, is the only public medical school in Georgia and one of the largest medical schools in the United States. MCG and its graduates have a special responsibility to identify and address the healthcare needs of the state of Georgia.
MCG is a hot spot for pivotal medical research and strives to integrate new research into students’ medical education seamlessly. Augusta University recently spent millions investing in vision research and educational innovation.
Students who would like to experience large teaching hospitals and small primary care practices may appreciate MCG’s regional campus model. Using this model, the medical school is implementing a new three-year medical curriculum. This redesigned curriculum consists of a 3-year core medical program and allows students to choose their path for their 4th year. The options are to go straight into a primary care residency, obtain a dual degree, or receive advanced residency preparation.
1. Emory University School of Medicine
It is no surprise that Emory University is the highest-ranked medical school in the state of Georgia. The medical school is ranked #24 in research and #25 in primary care by US News and World Report.
Located in the heart of Atlanta, Emory Healthcare is the most extensive health system in Georgia and is world-renowned for its ground-breaking research and medical treatments. Students who want to participate in well-funded medical research will appreciate that Emory is ranked 14th nationally in NIH dollars’ amount. This year, Emory’s Department of Pediatrics ranked #1 in the number of research grants from the NIH and received nearly $100 million for research on childhood diseases.
Emory has strong ties with the CDC and put Atlanta on the map during the 2014 Ebola crisis. During this time of extreme fear, Emory’s Serious Communicable Diseases Unit (SCDU) saved several Ebola patients’ lives using evidence-based treatments and protocols. Students who want to answer the call to serve during worldwide public health crises may find Emory School of Medicine to be a great fit.
How to Get Accepted
As a general rule, average MCAT scores required for osteopathic programs, such as the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, tend to be slightly lower than average MCAT scores for MD programs. Therefore, it makes sense that the average MCAT scores for PCOM’s Georgia campuses are between 500-503, and the average GPA is 3.5.
Applicants with intermediate MCAT and GPA scores should look into Mercer and Morehouse School of Medicine. Students accepted to these schools have average MCAT scores in the range of 505-506 and an average GPA of 3.6 – 3.7. In addition to these scores, prospective Mercer and Morehouse students should align with each school’s values and ideology. Both schools are more likely to accept applicants who have a passion for caring for rural populations in Georgia and address racial inequalities in healthcare and medicine.
Students with higher MCAT scores and GPAs may gain admission to the more selective Georgia medical schools on this list. Emory University and Augusta University tend to accept students with MCAT scores in the range of 512-515, and most have a GPA above 3.8. It was going so well in the first semester until we had to leave in the middle of the second semester due to Covid-19. Luckily MGA acted quickly and students were placed online. Middle Georgia State University cares about their students, and it’s pretty self evident.

However, some recommendations I would have for the school would be to become more well-rounded with emphasis on the arts, sport, and humanities. The courses are also extremely rigorous. The school stresses being the best and the harshest – which can be hard at times. Also – the area and social activities are somewhat lacking compared to other schools, from everything I’ve seen. It’s possible to have these things and enjoy them – but it’s a make-the-most-of-what-you-have type of situation.

The growth and commitment this state is making to future doctors is impressive to say the least. Many students that attend a Georgia medical school end up staying for quite a while!
The following list will help you get a better understanding of what your options are, and what’s expected from you as an applicant. This will help you quickly figure out which school is right for you.
Emory University School of Medicine

Emory University School of Medicine is located on the university’s main campus in the city’s affluent Druid Hills neighborhood. The school grants an M.D. degree, a Ph.D. degree in biological and biomedical sciences and a D.P.T. degree, as well as master’s degrees in anesthesiology, genetic counseling and physician assistant and a bachelor’s degree in medical imaging. It also offers joint degrees with other graduate programs and continuing medical education.
Your first year and first semester of your second year toward your M.D. degree will involve preclinical education in basic medical sciences. You’ll then begin your clinical training in a small group. During the Discovery Phase in your third year, you’ll have the opportunity to conduct research in your choice of medical fields, including basic science, clinical research, and public health. One of the school’s noteworthy affiliated research institutions is the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Medical College of Georgia at Augusta University

Not only is the Medical College of Georgia at Augusta University the only public medical school in the state, but it’s also one of the 10 largest medical schools in the nation, the oldest of the university’s schools and the leading provider of physicians in the state.
Some of the programs the college offers are the M.D. degree and joint M.D.-Ph.D., M.D.-M.P.H. and M.D.-M.B.A. degrees. Known for its faculty’s emphasis on research, the college was the site of the nation’s first hysterectomy.
Competition for admission to the school is high, and students accepted generally have a higher grade point average and a higher Medical College Admission Test score than students accepted at other medical schools in the nation. You’ll spend your first year toward your M.D. degree at one of two campuses. During your third and fourth years, you may study at either the main campus or at one of four satellite campuses. You’ll receive a short white coat during your first year and will receive your full-length coat upon graduation.
Mercer University School of Medicine

Dedicated to providing the state with gifted and talented physicians, the private Mercer University School of Medicine, or MUSM, admits only residents of Georgia into its programs. The school maintains campuses in Macon, Savannah, and Columbus.
You have a choice of several degree options at the school, including the M.D., the Ph.D. in Clinical Medical Psychology, a Master of Science in either Biomedical or Preclinical Sciences or Anesthesia or a master’s in either family therapy or public health.
Instead of a traditional lecture-based preclinical format, the school utilizes an innovative formal discussion-based curriculum that focuses on interaction within small groups. Your group meets several times each week to discuss specific subject matter. This approach to learning allows you to actively participate in both learning and teaching within the group. You have the option of either receiving your entire four years of M.D. training at Macon or Savannah or completing your third and fourth years at Columbus.
Morehouse School of Medicine

Recently ranked first among the nation’s medical schools for its social mission, Morehouse School of Medicine, or MSM, focuses on providing health care to minorities and rural and urban populations in underserved areas around the world.
Several notable health care professionals have been affiliated with the school, including Louis W. Sullivan, who served both as dean and as president and who later served as United States Secretary of Health & Human Services and David Satcher, who served as U.S. Surgeon General and later as president of the school. In addition to the M.D. program, you can choose from pursuing either a Ph.D. or an M.S. degree in one of the biomedical sciences or an M.P.H. degree.
As a student working toward your M.D. degree, you’ll take most of your first two years of classes on the main campus. You’ll also begin your clinical training during your first year at a private office and continue at a lab in the school’s National Center for Primary Care. Most of your clinical instruction will take place at Grady Memorial Hospital, the only level-one trauma center within 100 miles of Atlanta.
Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine – Georgia
- Location: Suwanee, GA

Located on 23 acres in Suwanee, the private Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine Georgia, or GA-PCOM, campus encourages its graduates to focus on underserved rural and urban areas. Buildings on the campus include the 170,000-square-foot Old Peachtree structure, which houses a research, a multi-use basic science, an anatomy and three pharmacy practice labs, an osteopathic manipulative medicine practice suite and the Simulation and Physical Therapy Education Centers.
Other structures located on the campus include the 21,000-square-foot Northlake building, which houses admissions, administrative, marketing and communications offices and alumni relations and human resources and the Georgia Osteopathic Care Center clinic. GA-PCOM was one of the first medical colleges to utilize high-tech patient simulators and standardized patient actors.
In addition to the D.O. program, the college offers the Pharm.D. and D.P.T. degrees and M.S. degrees in biomedical sciences, physician assistant and organizational development and leadership and a certificate in medical simulation. Once you’ve earned your degree, you can take advantage of the college’s osteopathic post-graduate training.
