The University Grants Commission (UGC) has recently allowed universities to start PhD programs for students over age of 50 years. The courses have been launched with the purpose of providing education to the senior citizens and retired professors, who have spent most of their time in research but were not able to secure a degree.

Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) programs are available at a number of universities in the United States and Canada, as well as abroad. PhD programs are offered in a number of fields, including business administration, computer science, education and psychology.
Doctorate degrees are also available in other countries throughout the world. In addition to those listed above, students can earn doctorates in applied mathematics or physical science at institutions such as Harvard University; Stanford University; University of California Los Angeles (UCLA); Massachusetts Institute Technology (MIT); Princeton University; Rice University; Georgia Institute Technology (Georgia Tech). These schools have entry requirements that include an undergraduate degree with high academic standing from an accredited institution plus GRE scores
Certain conditions apply
There are a few things that must be in place for you to qualify for the program. First, you have to be a senior citizen (defined as someone 62 years or older). Second, you have to be a United States citizen and resident of the state where the university is located. Third, you must meet all admissions requirements for both the university and its PhD program; this includes having an undergraduate degree from an accredited institution and earning at least 50 semester hours at or above your master’s level before applying for admission into any doctoral program offered by that school (in some cases this may not apply but will vary from one institution’s rules). And fourthly—and most importantly—you must pass all faculty approval processes to prove that you have what it takes academically AND professionally within your field of study!

- The University of Maryland Eastern Shore offers free tuition for some students interested in becoming teachers after graduation.
