Haematology is a fun, challenging course, with lots of great information packed into it. We’ve already learned about the important components of the blood: red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets, and plasma. Today’s lesson will focus on two major cell types in the blood: red blood cells and white blood cells.

  1. Anemia is a condition in which the amount of iron in the blood is low. The normal red blood cell count may be increased, decreased, or normal. A deficiency of iron leads to anemia. Iron is necessary for the formation of hemoglobin. Hemoglobin is the major protein in red blood cells and its job is to carry oxygen from the lungs to the rest of the body.
  2. There are three types of anemia: iron deficiency, vitamin B12 and folate deficiency, and sickle cell anemia. Iron deficiency anemia is caused by insufficient dietary intake, excessive menstrual loss, or blood loss due to gastrointestinal bleeding secondary to ulcers or colon cancer. Inadequate amounts of iron may also be lost through chronic blood donation or excessive sweating. Pregnancy can cause iron deficiency anemia because women lose more iron during pregnancy than they usually consume. Women with heavy periods can also become deficient in iron during their lifetime because they lose an average of 150 milligrams per cycle.
  3. There are two types of B12 deficiency: pernicious and non-pernicious anemia. Pernicious anemia occurs when intrinsic factor is lacking in the stomach so B12 cannot be absorbed in the terminal ileum where it normally.
