- Three letters of reference that describe your qualifications and aptitude for the combined D.V.M./Ph.D. program. At least one should be from a research mentor who can address your commitment to and abilities in research.
- Your CV/resume that includes education, independent research experiences, publications, abstracts, presentations. Please include GRE General Test scores.
If you indicate you wish to be considered for the combined D.V.M./Ph.D. program (on the Colorado Supplemental Application), your application will additionally be considered in the regular D.V.M. admissions pool. When decisions are released, if you receive an OFFER to the D.V.M./Ph.D. program, you will not be further considered in the regular D.V.M. admissions pool, regardless of whether or not you accept or decline the D.V.M./Ph.D. offer. If you are denied or designated as an alternate for the D.V.M./Ph.D. program, your application will be considered in the regular D.V.M. admissions pool.
If you withdraw your acceptance to the D.V.M./Ph.D. program before/after matriculation into the graduate program, you will be dismissed from the professional D.V.M. program. You will have to re-apply for admission to the D.V.M. program or the graduate school.
INTERVIEW PROCESS
Interviews are an intensive on-site, two-day visit including a formal interview with the Internal Advisory Committee, one-on-one meetings with three potential faculty research mentors that share the interviewee’s interests, significant interaction with current program trainees, and a dinner with all of the above.

Combining veterinary clinical training and graduate-level research
The College’s DVM-PhD dual degree program is designed to enhance the career development of students with an interest in science, veterinary research, and graduate education by pursuing a DVM and PhD degree concurrently. Also known as the Veterinary Medical Scientist Training Program (VMSTP), this innovative program produces scientists with a clinical background who go on to investigate complex human and animal health issues.
The philosophy of this program is “One Health,” where veterinary medicine intersects with human medicine, and both interlock with basic research to contribute to the advancement of biomedical research. Our goal is to produce an outstanding group of biomedical researchers capable of identifying new emerging diseases, revealing their mechanisms of pathogenesis, and providing novel solutions for their control. Our College’s rigorous curriculum, superb training facilities, and highly competitive research opportunities provide the link for outstanding students to develop into clinical scientists generating cutting-edge discoveries.
About the program
How it works
Typically the dual DVM-PhD program takes at least seven years to complete. This includes 30 hours of PhD coursework, nine semesters of DVM study, and several years of research study. In any one semester, VMSTP scholars are enrolled in either the DVM or a PhD curriculum and students may begin their training in either curriculum.
Some scholars have entered the VMSTP after their first year in the DVM curriculum, enrolled as a graduate student and initiated their research prior to continuing/finishing the DVM. However, the ideal program of study for a new VMSTP student begins with 2 to 4 years of graduate training. This allows the student to complete graduate coursework and be admitted to candidacy for the doctoral degree. During this time, the student should also acquire extensive experience with research protocols that will be used to obtain data for research publications and the doctoral dissertation. The student will enter the veterinary curriculum the first fall semester after admission to doctoral candidacy.
During the summers and for some elective periods, the student will return to the research laboratory in order to continue their doctoral research. Completion of the research project and dissertation defense can occur during this time or after completing the DVM curriculum.
We expect every VMSTP scholar to become a clinically competent veterinarian as well as a biomedical researcher capable of acquiring research funding and publishing their work. In order to function at a high level of cross-competency, the scholar must focus his/her efforts on medicine when enrolled in the DVM curriculum and on research productivity when enrolled as a graduate student.
Picking a PhD program
Possible PhD graduate programs within the CVM or outside of the CVM that may be compatible with the dual DVM-PhD degree program are: computer science, statistics, biological sciences, cellular biology, toxicology, psychology, pharmacology, genetics, biochemistry, ecology, chemistry, microbiology, nutrition, policy, engineering and others. The curriculum for PhD programs varies considerably and not all doctoral programs are willing to allow students to be dually enrolled. Contact the graduate coordinator of your desired PhD program to determine its suitability for the VMSTP. You can also request that the VMSTP Coordinator confer with the PhD Graduate Coordinator.
Eligibility
Any student already pursuing a DVM or PhD degree at UGA may apply to this dual degree program. We also accept applicants from prospective UGA students new to both programs.
Candidates for the DVM-PhD program must have strong academic credentials and a documented interest in biomedical research. This program is not appropriate for students who have little research experience or for those who have not already decided to pursue research training. Applicants will be ranked for acceptance based on their overall GPA, science GPA, GRE scores, and the depth and duration of their veterinary and research experience. The DVM-PhD program is highly competitive, accepting only a limited number of students each year.
To be considered for the program, candidates must also meet the eligibility requirements and be accepted into the college’s DVM program and into the PhD program that they are wanting to pursue, if they are not already enrolled in those programs.

Other factors include participation in a variety of extracurricular and community activities with evidence of achievement and leadership; experience working with animals and familiarity with the many facets of veterinary medicine; diverse experiences; written and verbal communication skills, presentation of a carefully prepared application; and a candidate’s potential as a successful veterinarian.

The philosophy of the Veterinary Admissions Committee is to strive to admit a class of veterinary students who will successfully complete the program and actively contribute to current and future needs of the veterinary profession.
HOLISTIC REVIEW
The admissions committee uses a holistic approach in the review of every application. Each component helps build the full 360 degree picture of who you are and your story. Each piece, coursework, quality/hours of experience, personal statement, and letters of recommendation are all considered individually and as a whole to select candidates who will not only be able to handle the academic rigor of a veterinary program, but also contribute to the veterinary profession.
Our holistic evaluation does not use calculated GPAs, nor required minimums for any category.

SPECIAL CIRCUMSTANCES
An applicant’s unique attributes that may positively impact future professional success are considered on an individual basis. Also considered are potential economic, educational, and/or cultural/environmental factors.
EARLY ACADEMIC REVIEW
Applications with a cumulative GPA of 3.2 or lower will undergo an early screening process for evidence of the candidate’s ability to handle a rigorous upper-division biomedical sciences curriculum. Some candidates will be denied and some will move forward.
VET PREP PROGRAM
This one-year program assists disadvantaged students. Candidates in the regular D.V.M. admissions pool with a qualified disadvantage and an application that presents an ability to handle a rigorous biomedical sciences curriculum (often showing an upward trend in academic coursework/credit load) will be considered for the Vet Prep Program. There is not a separate application – candidates do not apply for this program.
