NYU is definitely not where you’ll find the typical college experience. You are mostly on your own after freshman year, but I find that most of the students here prefer it that way; it gives us a sense of independence that other colleges don’t offer. Classes are quite difficult but they are manageable if you apply yourself! I’ve unfortunately had to be sent home last semester because of COVID-19, but the professors were very understanding while we were taking online classes, which only supports the fact that the professors at NYU are excellent. The location of the school is amazing and the dorms are probably better than most other colleges in the country, and the dining halls are pretty good too!

I can’t speak for every department, although the professors in the Linguistics and Spanish department are AMAZING! The only reason I didn’t give BU a 5 star is because the housing and food situation were a nightmare. Early into my spring semester I decided to move off campus and lose the money that I had already payed on my housing and food deposit because I was having trouble sleeping and digestive problems. These problems were addressed to the school, although they refused to help in any way.

As a junior who was accepted into mechanical engineering after spending a year undecided (College of Letters & Sciences), choosing to stay at UMD was one of the best decisions I ever made. Our campus is always buzzing with people and activities year-round, and there are clubs for literally any interest group you can think of. Despite campus being fairly large, it’s very easy to get around and I really don’t mind walking 15 minutes to my classes, it’s usually less if you live directly on campus and depending on your major/where your classes are generally held.
   
   One piece of advice I would give specifically about transferring into Engineering is to try to take engineering classes even as an undecided major. While it’s possible to graduate on time after transferring, it’s a lot more work when you’re taking 4 technical classes at once. Overall I love UMD and its programs though and I would highly recommend it!

The college is quite liberal and welcoming of students from different backgrounds and identities including LGBTQ+ students and other religions. Another thing that I have been pleasantly surprised with is downtown Northfield. To outsiders, it seems way too small and dreary when actually it’s quite the contrary. There are the most wonderful quaint cafes and shops downtown that make for a nice break from academics or Saturday brunch with friends- my favorite cafe is “Goodbye Blue Monday”. Being a vibrant college town, the social and party scene isn’t limited or boring EVER because Carleton College is just across the river and the students from the two colleges get along well and have joint events.

    One interesting thing about Florida State University is that there is a circus that is student run and there is no prior experience needed! If you are interested and want to learn they will teach you what you are interested in learning.

I think the professors do a nice job in terms of content and transparency. Since all classes are online for me, cost is cheaper than other programs in FL (I did my research of all FL institutions before applying). The students also try to help each other out in my classes; there’s a sense of friendly competition around here as we’re all just trying to succeed in these undergraduate courses. I will say that the professors may go too fast in their lectures (although I’ve only taken two courses from two professors), but that’s the only piece of criticism I have!

One of the issues I have run into is a lack of communication from my academic advisor, which is not the case with all of them. I want to add a botany major, however the classes are spotty, with few being available at a given time. The staff in the department don’t seem to know if or when they can offer some classes, I think due to shortage of professors to teach. The main major I am going for is zoology, but there are few animal-specific courses offered. If you pride yourself in offering botany and zoology degrees specifically, then make sure you actually are able to offer the classes for them! Also Oxford makes intro. chemistry way harder than it needs to be to weed people out.
    However, there are also multiple things I love about Miami. The scenery is beautiful, the dining halls are pretty nice, and my korean prof. is absolutely wonderful, so kind and understanding.

Each of the staff on campus cares about YOU as an individual and wants to help you succeed in every way possible. You are at an advantage in a smaller pond because you’re not just a number, you’re important and significant to everyone that you’ll meet! However the school has some drawbacks, you have to advocate more for yourself compared to other schools. If there is an issue with your schedule, good luck finding help. If there is an error with your grade, get ready to get sent across the whole campus to get it fixed. Regardless of those drawbacks, the school is very good!

However, there is no doubt that this is a fantastic place to be educated. I am a member of the dance department and I can speak on behalf of their excellent, top-notch training. They always bring in various guest artists throughout the year (2 which each stay a full semester, even) and host plenty of performance opportunities and auditions.
