While writing my resume and creating cover letters, I have asked myself the same question numerous times: “What are my objectives for undertaking an internship with unhcr ?” I have also been thinking about this objective on a weekly and monthly basis. When I was given an opportunity to interview with unhcr , I decided to dedicate some time exploring what exactly my goals really were. Doing this resulted in greater clarity about my role as an intern at unhcr .

I am interested in an internship with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) because I believe it will provide me with valuable experience and knowledge that will help me succeed in my career.

I have always been fascinated by international relations, and have had an interest in working on behalf of refugees since learning about the refugee crisis in Syria. At this time there are more than 65 million displaced people around the world—the most since World War II. This is a humanitarian crisis that must be addressed, and it is clear that organizations like UNHCR will play a key role in helping to resolve it.

My objectives for undertaking an internship with UNHCR are to gain experience working on international issues such as refugee resettlement, asylum claims, and protection issues related to women and children who are fleeing violence and persecution. I want to gain practical skills such as writing reports and carrying out interviews with clients who are seeking resettlement or asylum status so that I can apply these skills when working on my own projects after graduation from college.

Introduction

I am writing to apply for the advertised Internship Coordinator with UNHCR, which is suited to my experience, qualifications and personal qualities. The opportunity to work for such a diverse organization as UNHCR is one that I sincerely want. After two years of academic study at the University of Amsterdam, I understand how keenly you need people who are passionate about their role in the organization, who have an entrepreneurial spirit and who are ready to help grow the business within its own sector or across new ones.

How would you describe your objectives of undertaking an internship with UNHCR?

You may want to describe your objectives as “I am looking for a career in business, and I want to learn about the management and administration of an organization. I also hope to gain experience in my field of study by working with others who have more knowledge than I do.”

You could say something like “I’m seeking an internship at UNHCR because it is one of the biggest humanitarian organizations in the world, so it would be a great learning experience for me. The agency operates on a global scale, so I will get exposure from all areas where refugees are located – including Africa and Europe – which will help me develop my skillset further.”

Another thing that many people value highly when they decide whether or not they should apply for an internship is whether or not they can make a difference within their community; someone who wants this kind of opportunity might say: “I want to use my time at UNHCR as an opportunity not only improve myself but also help others through volunteering activities during my free time.”

What are your references going to say about you?

When you are asked for references, what will they say about you?

Think about the last time someone asked for a reference for a job or internship. How did that person describe your skills and abilities? What examples were provided to demonstrate how well you could do the work required by this position?

If that person cannot give specific examples of your skills and abilities, then why would anyone want to hire them in the first place?

Conclusion

I am interested in interning with the UNHCR to learn more about working with human rights and humanitarian aid. I have a background in political science and international relations, which has given me knowledge of these issues through an academic lens. By seeing how they play out in real life situations, I hope to gain a better understanding of their practical applications and challenges.
