Uppsala University and the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) have jointly created the Master’s Programme in Sustainable Development to offer higher education on complex problems facing humanity and the planet, and challenges concerned with sustainable futures.

The programme has an interdisciplinary character and combines advanced courses on a range of topics concerned with sustainable development, including theoretical and practical courses within natural resource use, society and the environment, and energy-water-food.

During the programme you can expect to

  • Use systems-thinking to analyse complex challenges to sustainable development, such as resource extraction and use, biodiversity loss and protection, or economic growth and social inequalities.
  • Apply analytical approaches from different research fields and improve your understanding of subjects outside your academic background.
  • Enhance your critical and reflective thinking on the opportunities of and challenges to achieving sustainable development by learning about alternative visions and building future scenarios.
  • Co-create sustainable futures in a highly diverse group of international students with different academic backgrounds.
  • Gain practical experience through in-depth method courses and internships.


The programme leads to a Master of Science (120 credits) with Sustainable Development as the main field of study.


You will devote the first semester to subject areas within and outside your specialisation, balancing between social and natural sciences. You will also take part in interdisciplinary seminars where current issues concerning sustainable development are explored.

During your second semester, you will study how society’s structure influences our ability to achieve sustainable development. The studies embrace global issues, decision-making processes and interdisciplinary methods. You will use your knowledge in a case study that you pursue together with the other students.
If you wish to obtain a one-year Master’s degree, you must conclude the second semester with an essay.

In the third semester you may choose from a wide range of advanced courses in your specialisation to deepen the knowledge obtained from your Bachelor’s degree. You may also choose to gain practical experience or broaden your knowledge from courses at a lower level outside your field of expertise. During this time, you may apply for one of the departmental student exchange agreements or other exchange agreements at the faculty and university.

The fourth and final semester is dedicated to writing your degree project. You may pursue this project within the academic world, industry or the public sector, abroad or in Sweden.


The Master’s Programme in Sustainable Development is interdisciplinary, which implies that your classmates will have completely different previous experiences from your own. We see the diversity of the student body and the differences in perspectives as a great benefit to our students and the programme.

Teaching takes place at Uppsala University and the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU), located in Uppsala. Usually, you will take two courses in parallel.

Teaching is usually composed of lectures, computer and field exercises, and seminars where you discuss your written work and others. In seminars, the teacher usually only moderates the discussion. The aim is to develop critical thinking and collaborative skills. All the students are expected to be active participants in all forms of discussions. The more you participate in discussions and other classroom activities, the more you will learn.

Group work is often carried out in interdisciplinary teams. You will need to complete your tasks together with your classmates outside of the classroom. This way, you learn from each other, and you train to be a team player.

The language of instruction is English.


Addressing challenges associated with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) require both global measures and local actions. These efforts include, for example, managing sustainable transitions, restructuring local economies, industries and communities. It also involves developing sustainable production and consumption patterns, or introducing sustainable policies, norms and practices concerned with resource use and environmental protection.

The knowledge and skills in sustainable development are required in jobs across different sectors worldwide. University West is Sweden’s leading university in work integrated learning (WIL). We were tasked with the development of WIL by the Swedish government 15+ years ago and continue to lead the field today. WIL allows you to reflect and put your knowledge and skills into practice within real-world contexts.

We built your programme in close collaboration with public, private and non-profit partners. The curriculum is designed for action. It will help you understand theories, evaluate plans and work towards global goals for sustainable development within your areas of interest.

Additionally, you may choose to hold an internship in the third semester of your programme, and your studies conclude with a master’s thesis you design in collaboration with your supervisor. It will address real issues in sustainable development currently faced by an organisation or group.


About the programme


The United Nations describes sustainable development as the organising principle for achieving development goals while allowing natural systems to provide natural resources and ecosystem services that support society and the economy.

The global goals aim to balance the three dimensions of sustainable development: ecological sustainability, social sustainability and economic sustainability. Updating and shaping knowledge and results in regard to the 17 global goals of Agenda 2030 within organisations and companies is a step towards achieving sustainable development.

The three dimensions of sustainable development

  • Ecological sustainability, which involves the long-term use of natural resources without harming the possibilities for and survival of ecosystems
  • Social sustainability, which is about striving for a just society where fundamental human rights are respected
  • Economic sustainability, which enables all people to meet their basic needs in relation to the finite resources of the globe, i.e., an economic development that does not have a negative impact on ecological or social sustainability

Through this programme, you will learn how to be an active agent or leader in organisations or groups playing their part in evaluating and implementing sustainable development goals.  


The programme is multidisciplinary and includes study in organisational development, sustainability, political science, law, environmental philosophy and more. Work-integrated learning forms the foundation of your studies, with special focus on sustainable development.

The programme prepares you to:

  • Reflect on how knowledge is created, learned and translated into practical action within and between activities, society and the state
  • Understand sustainable development, the common global goals and their complexity

Work integrated learning consists of several integrated components, including:

Work integrated learning runs through the entire programme. You will simultaneously study and engage in activities (such as data collection, optional internship, etc.) while facing so-called “wicked problems”: complex problems that require more than one theoretical perspective to solve. You can choose to include an internship as part of your course, in which case you will study over 15 months rather than a year. To do this, you should initially register for the one-year programme and then transfer to the 15 month programme when you have secured a placement, any time up until the middle of Semester 2.

The internship / placement further enhances the development of professional experience and practical skills during your Masters programme, integrating practitioner community engagement with your academic studies.

This element is student-centred and student-led, and therefore the initiative for identifying and applying for internships is driven by you. Academic staff can facilitate and support the identification of suitable opportunities with leads and suggestions, help with the writing of applications, and provide supporting letters of reference. They provide customised preparatory training before, and mentoring support during, the placement or internship.

The internship / placement can be taken with an organisation anywhere in the world. You’ll need to detail your proposed activities and receive approval before the opportunity is finalised.

Once the internship / placement is complete you’ll return to the programme, submit a completion report summarising key learning points, and then undertake your Masters dissertation. Students often use their placement period and experience to inform and shape their dissertation.

Learning and assessment

In addition to lectures, seminars and classroom and virtual learning tool-based learning, there will be small group activities, both assessed and unassessed (formative), which give you the opportunity to develop and reinforce collaborative learning skills.

  • This programme provides the empirical tools, data, and STATA software training that will enable students to investigate economic development and to prepare an independent empirical analysis.

You will take 3 core courses (3 courses listed below plus a dissertation) and 3 optional courses from the optional list below. The programme is designed to equip you for a career as professional planning staff in private or public sector organisations concerned with the design and implementation of environmental policies, environmental issues in international agencies or research. Recent graduates have been employed as development practitioners and environmental policy analysts for organisations such as BP, Royal Society for the Protection of Birds and public sector bodies. We have a dedicated careers and employability team who provide 1-2-1 support and advice, group workshops, employer events on campus and networking opportunities throughout the year to help you with your career prospects.


2:1 Honours degree or equivalent in an accepted subject, with at least 10% of credit bearing modules in Economics.

Accepted subjects include: Economics, Finance, Engineering, Earth Sciences, Geography or a related discipline within Social Sciences and Humanities. Degrees in other subjects may also be accepted if you have 10% of credits in Economics or equivalent relevant work experience.

Only applications that meet or exceed our stated entry requirements will go forward for consideration. Any application that does not will be automatically rejected. Applicants will be made offers based on their relative performance compared to other applicants, taking into account both current GPA, or degree classification, and the relevance of an applicant’s academic background.

For applicants whose first language is not English, the University sets a minimum English Language proficiency level.

International English Language Testing System (IELTS) Academic module (not General Training)

  • 6.5 with 2 sub-tests at 6.5 and 2 sub-tests at 6.0.
  • Tests must have been taken within 4 years 5 months of start date.

Common equivalent English language qualifications

All stated English tests are acceptable for admission to this programme:

TOEFL (ibt, my best or athome)

  • 90 with minimum R 20, L 19, S 19, W 23.
  • Tests must have been taken within 4 years 5 months of start date. 

PTE (Academic or home)

  • 60 with minimum 59 in all subtests.
  • Tests must have been taken within 4 years 5 months of start date. 

Cambridge Proficiency in English (CPE) and Cambridge Advanced English (CAE) 

  • 176 overall, no subtest less than 169
  • Tests must have been taken within 4 years 5 months, combined scores from 2 tests sat within 6 months of each other can be considered.

Glasgow International College English Language (and other foundation providers)

  • 65%.
  • Tests are accepted for academic year following sitting.

University of Glasgow Pre-sessional courses

  • Tests are accepted for 2 years following date of successful completion.

Alternatives to English Language qualification

  • Undergraduate degree from English speaking country (including Canada if taught in English)
  • Undergraduate 2+2 degree from English speaking country
  • Undergraduate 2+2 TNE degree taught in English in non-English speaking country
  • Masters degree from English speaking country
  • Masters degree (equivalent on NARIC to UK masters degree) taught in English in non-English speaking country.

For international students, the Home Office has confirmed that the University can choose to use these tests to make its own assessment of English language ability for visa applications to degree level programmes. The University is also able to accept UKVI approved Secure English Language Tests (SELT) but we do not require a specific UKVI SELT for degree level programmes. We therefore still accept any of the English tests listed for admission to this programme.
