Uppsala University was established in 1477 by the initiative of Archbishop Jakob Ulvsson of Uppsala. It was Scandinavia’s first university and began with only a few professors and around 50 students. The university was shut down in the 16th century’s early decades due to the political unrest during the rule of Gustav I Vasa, Sweden’s new monarch.

Towards the 16th century’s end, the Protestant clergy had acquired a concrete hold over religious education. The Church council in Uppsala decided to restore the university’s privileges in 1593 and the new charter was signed on March 15, 1595. The university has been providing high-quality education in various fields for five centuries.

Uppsala University has many campus buildings across Uppsala and a campus in Visby, Gotland, which offers education in law, humanities, science and technology, languages, social sciences, educational science, and theology. Blasenhus offers education and research facilities in pedagogy, educational studies, didactics, and psychology. It also houses the Blasenhus Library, Uppsala Child and Baby Lab, and the Experimental Classroom.

Uppsala Biomedical Centre (BMC) is listed amongst the largest life sciences centers in Europe and provides education and research facilities in chemistry, pharmacy, medicine, biology, and dietetics. Evolutionary Biology Centre (EBC) offers education in evolutionary processes and biology and offers facilities for research in physiology, environmental toxicology, and developmental biology. It is also home to the Museum of Evolution with zoology, paleontology, and botany.

Ekonomikum offers courses in subjects such as economic history, economics, business studies, informatics and media, trade law, statistics, and social and economic geography. The English Park Campus houses the Humanities Theatre, the Choral Centre, the Karin Boye Library, and Hugo Valentin Centre and provides programs in social sciences and humanities. Gamla Torget Campus has Skytteanum, Oxenstiernska, the Dag Hammarskjöld Library, and Munken and offers facilities for research and education in political science, law, and conflict research and housing and urban peace research. Other prominent buildings operated by the university include the Geo Centre, Information Technology Centre (ITC), the Rudbeck Laboratory, Uppsala University Hospital, the Angstrom Laboratory, and Gustavianum.

Uppsala University offers 144 study programs at Bachelor’s and Master’s levels, as well as 1,922 freestanding courses in various fields like theology, arts, law, social sciences, languages, pharmacy, medicine, mathematics, sciences and computer science. Housing over 40,000 students and around 5,000 teachers and researchers, the university consists of nearly 50 academic departments. It maintains collaborations with more than 400 universities around the world to facilitate excellent student-exchange programs. The institution also presents students with outstanding career prospects and employment opportunities by building partnerships with various good employers.

The university has several distinguished alumni including 15 Nobel Prize laureates. Sofia Wadensjo Karen works as the managing director at Swedish Educational Broadcasting Company and has served as the editor-in-chief of VI magazine. Anita Falkenek is the CEO of Krav. Trita Parsi is an Iran expert and a political adviser. Niklas Zennström is the CEO of Atomico, a well-reputed investment firm. Maria and Jan Berglin are famous cartoonists. Petra Einarsson is Sandvik Materials Technology’s CEO.
