We are an integrative department taking a connective approach to the life sciences, fostering collaboration and intellectual partnerships across many different disciplines. The research and teaching we do spans from cellular and molecular biology to global climate change, and from bacterial microevolution in the lab to evolution and extinctions hundreds of millions of years ago. Recognizing the need for highly trained scientists conversant across disciplines, the University of Washington and the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center (Fred Hutch) offer an interdisciplinary research program, the Molecular and Cellular Biology Graduate Program (MCB). For 25 years, MCB has combined the strengths of UW and Fred Hutch to foster an innovative and flexible graduate training program. Joined by the Benaroya Research Institute (BRI), Seattle Children’s and Pacific Northwest Research Institute (PNRI), MCB offers a broad range of opportunities for research in all areas of biomedical science.

The UW School of Medicine is home to more than 650 postdoctoral researchers appointed throughout the School’s 32 academic departments. UW Medicine’s robust research environment and collaborative culture create outstanding opportunities for postdoctoral training. 

Salary and benefits

Biomedical Sciences programs guarantee competitive salary, medical coverage, and tuition waivers to students in good standing according to program policies. 

In most cases, the Bioengineering program and the Bioinformatics programs provide stipend and tuition waivers or research assistantships to their students. However, this funding is not guaranteed.

Visiting International Student Internship & Training (VISIT)

The UW School of Medicine participates in the Visiting International Student Internship & Training Program (VISIT). The VISIT program permits students pursuing predoctoral programs at universities outside of the U.S. to participate in full-time, supervised research and work-based learning experiences at the University of Washington. In the UW School of Medicine, such internship experiences are generally based on existing collaborations between our faculty members and the student’s home institution. Applications* for the program can be found on the ​​VISIT website.

*The 1025-J VISIT Visa Request Form must be signed by the faculty mentor, the department chair, and routed to the [email protected] with all necessary attachments for signature on behalf of the Dean of the School of Medicine.

How to apply

Application to one of the Biomedical Sciences programs must be completed using the UW Graduate School’s Application for Graduate Study at the University of Washington form. Completing this form, and following the instructions for each specific program, will fulfill application requirements for both the UW Graduate School and the individual program. If you wish to apply to more than one program, you must complete a new application, and pay another application fee.​

The Division is dedicated to providing an ideal learning environment for every student. With the freedom to explore many areas of research and so many outstanding mentors from which to choose, finding the perfect match is virtually assured. The Division’s student-to-faculty ratio is less than two to one, which means every students gets hands-on attention and effective mentorship. Prospective students apply to the Division rather than to an individual program.  Students are admitted into a specific program but may change their Program affiliation as their interests develop

Popularity of Biology at UW Seattle

During the 2019-2020 academic year, University of Washington – Seattle Campus handed out 156 bachelor’s degrees in general biology. Due to this, the school was ranked #136 in popularity out of all colleges and universities that offer this degree. This is a decrease of 7% over the previous year when 168 degrees were handed out.

In 2020, 2 students received their master’s degree in biology from UW Seattle. This makes it the #326 most popular school for biology master’s degree candidates in the country.

Nine University of Washington subjects ranked in the top 10 and the UW School of Oceanography held its position as No. 1 in the world on the Global Ranking of Academic Subjects list for 2020. The ranking, released June 29,  was conducted by researchers at the Center for World-Class Universities at Shanghai Jiao Tong University.

Other UW subjects in the top 10 include atmospheric sciences at No. 2, dentistry and oral sciences and public health at No. 4, education at No. 7, biological sciences at No. 8 and clinical medicine, finance and business administration at No. 10.

“The need for excellence in scientific discovery, groundbreaking scholarship and training highly skilled experts has never been more evident or urgent,” said President Ana Mari Cauce. “The University of Washington is proud to again be recognized as a leader in the vital endeavor of advancing discovery and creating new knowledge to support a better world.”

The group ranked more than 4,000 universities around the world in 52 subjects across natural sciences, engineering, life sciences, medical sciences and social sciences.

In 2019, the UW was ranked No. 14 on the group’s annual Academic Ranking of World Universities list. This year’s university ranking has not yet been released.
