What is Pharmaceutical Sciences?

Our scientists are actively engaged in research that’s transforming biomedical science and Canada’s healthcare system.

A large part of our research community is focused on the molecular basis for drug targets and diseases, as well as on drug development and disease diagnostics. They are catalysts for the discovery and development of novel therapeutic targets, nanomedicine, new drugs, medical devices, and exploring the cellular basis of human disease.

Outside of the lab, many of our researchers partner with hospitals, healthcare leaders, and policy-makers working across Canada’s healthcare system on clinical pharmacy research, drug safety, and health services research. Ultimately, our shared goal is to ensure safe, effective, accessible, and affordable drug therapies and pharmacy practice excellence.

Pharmaceutical sciences encompass all aspects of the discovery, development, administration, distribution, and utilization of therapeutic drugs, and the nature, functioning, and dysfunctioning of the biological systems with which drugs interact. As a global leader in pharmaceutical research, the Leslie Dan Faculty of Pharmacy is home to some of the most prominent and distinguished experts in the area of pharmaceutical sciences. The department is centrally located in the heart of Toronto’s Health Sciences Discovery District. Students have the opportunity to conduct their research in collaboration with a wide range of departments at the University of Toronto and nearby world-class teaching hospitals and research institutes to solve some of health science’s most pressing problems.

Master of Science in Pharmaceutical Sciences (MSc)

What is a Master in Pharmacy?

Pharmacy is a subject which deals with the techniques of preparing and dispensing drugs. Students attending Pharmacy degrees will learn how different types of drugs affect the human body and mind and how they interact when mixed together.

A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Pharmacy will involve spending time in laboratories, researching and learning about the chemistry used to develop medication. Some of the courses covered by this degree consist of Pharmaceutics, Medicinal Chemistry, Pharmacognosy, and Pharmacy Practice.

During courses, students will learn about the fundamentals of pharmaceutical sciences. They will gain knowledge from related fields, such as Medicine, Chemistry, Biology, and even Ethics. During the final years of study, the approach will shift from theory to practice. You will also have to do an individual research project and present your findings.

After graduating with a degree in Pharmacy, you’ll know everything there is to know about prescription medication, its effects, and how drugs are created. You’ll need to develop great communication skills, allowing you to interact with patients, understand their conditions, and recommend the right treatment.

Considering everybody needs pharmacists at some point in their life, the fields you can find yourself in are vast and very diverse. Some of these are Community, Clinical, Veterinary, Military or Specialty Pharmacy, Pharmacy Informatics, Pharmacology, Science Writing, Toxicology, International Institutions with Health Care Professionals.

Why take the PharmD-MBA program?

  • The additional knowledge and skills acquired through an MBA program can provide pharmacists with unique advantages and opportunities across different sectors.
  • Pharmacists with MBAs are found in both the public and private sectors, working in government, academia, hospitals, pharmaceutical companies, consulting companies, and their own private practices.
  • For most students, the greatest value in a combined degree program is the opportunity to complete two degrees together in less time than it would take to receive both degrees separately. In the case of the Combined PharmD-MBA program, it would take a total of six academic years to complete the two degrees separately. Under the combined degree model, it will only take five academic years to complete
  • Students with a strong and clear focus for their future academic and career plans will see the immediate benefit of saving time and consolidating their learning experience through the Combined PharmD-MBA program

How to Apply to the PharmD-MBA program

To participate in the Combined PharmD-MBA, you must apply to and be admitted to both the PharmD and MBA programs separately. Each September, an information session will be held for second-year PharmD students interested in learning more about the Combined PharmD-MBA program. This session will describe the admission requirements, outline the application processes, and explain the opportunities presented by this unique Combined PharmD-MBA program. Interested students are encouraged to speak with the Combined PharmD-MBA Program Coordinator to discuss the program and begin planning.

Who is eligible to apply?

  • Only second year students in the PharmD program at the Leslie Dan Faculty of Pharmacy are able to apply for admission to the Combined PharmD-MBA program
  • The program is only offered to students who have completed at least one 4-year degree (e.g. BSc, BA, BComm, BEng) prior to enrolling in the PharmD program at the Leslie Dan Faculty of Pharmacy. Students who have not yet completed a 4-year degree from an accredited university are not eligible to apply.

Application Process & Timelines

  • During Year 2 of the PharmD program, students must complete and submit all admission requirements for the Full-Time MBA program offered by the Rotman School of Management by the posted deadlines.
  • Please note that the Rotman School of Management has five different admissions rounds, each with their own deadlines. To be considered for admission to the Combined PharmD-MBA program, second year PharmD students must complete and submit their applications by the Round 1 or Round 2 deadlines.
  • If you are accepted into the Full-Time MBA program at Rotman, you will need to notify the Combined PharmD-MBA Program Coordinator to be transferred into the Combined PharmD-MBA program. At that time, you will be directed to defer your acceptance into the Full-Time MBA program for one academic year to allow you to complete the remainder of the degree requirements for the PharmD degree.
