The Accounting and Finance program of University of Toronto delivers a world-class, practical educational experience that prepares students for both the Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) and Chartered Financial Analyst® (CFA®) designations and provides additional real-world co-op experience.
The professional MAccFin degree program is offered over 16 months using a cohort-based model. In this four-session program, students must be registered full-time and complete a sequence of courses. This program begins in the Summer session. I want to find another Master Course
The MAccFin program is designed for applicants who have not yet entered the workforce. These pre-experience applicants apply to the program immediately after completing their undergraduate degree. Applicants complete the School of Graduate Studies online admissions application and submit all official transcripts, two reference letters, and a resumé. MAccFin Eligibility and Application Process
In order to be considered for admission to the Master of Accounting and Finance program you must meet the following critieria:
- Completion of an appropriate four-year undergraduate degree with a specialization in Accounting
- University of Toronto applicants must have completed a Specialist undergraduate program in Accounting from any of the three campuses; OR,
- Non-University of Toronto applicants must have completed a substantially equivalent academic program from a recognized university.
- Academic achievement
- A minimum overall grade average of B or 73% across core course requirements (see links below).
- Within that average, core courses must be completed with a minimum grade achievement of C+ or 65%.

- English Language Proficiency
- Qualifying undergraduate degree where the language of instruction and examination is in English; OR,
- Satisfactory performance on a standardized English Language Test:
- TOEFL – Minimum score required is 100
- IELTS – Minimum score required is 7.0
If you completed your qualifying degree outside of Canada, there are additional admission requirements.
- Graduates of recognized academic institutions outside of Canada should hold an appropriate bachelor’s degree or its equivalent as assessed by the University of Toronto. Use the International Degree Equivalencies Tool to check which international credentials are required.
- Provide proof of English proficiency through satisfactory performance on a standardized English language test, such as TOEFL and IELTS, if your qualifying education was not taught primarily in English.
- Ensure that your education is appropriately recognized by the Chartered Professional Accountants (CPA) association in addition to the above eligibility criteria. The CPA will assess your academic credentials and will inform you whether or not you meet the minimum requirements to enter the MAccFin program. - If you meet the minimum course requirement, please upload the CPA documentation to your file when completing your online application.
- If you require additional undergraduate study, you may complete it and subsequently apply to the MAccFin program. We will accept CPA-recognized courses completed at any recognized university-level program or courses offered through the University of Toronto School of Continuing Studies. Please refer to the list of CPA-recognized university programs and courses.
Applications will be accepted online through the University of Toronto School of Graduate Studies.
We will be assessing applications on a rolling basis, assessing each prospective student upon submission of completed application.

For your application, please prepare the following:
- Statement of Interest: An essay of 250-400 words, written solely by you, which outlines your motivation for applying to the program and what you will accomplish during and after your studies.
- Resume: Maximum two pages summarizing your personal, academic, and professional accomplishments. Please highlight those accomplishments that will demonstrate your ability to complete the MAccFin program.
- Academic Reference Letters: Minimum two required. These are generally completed by a professor who you have studied/worked with in the past. Your reference must provide an email address from a recognized university. Academic references help confirm the accuracy of your statement of interest and to provide an opinion on your academic aptitude.
- Professional Reference Letter: One letter provided by a direct supervisor from your current or previous employer is an asset. This type of reference can provide an outside perspective of your work ethic and qualifications for employment.
- Transcripts: Scanned transcripts from ALL post-secondary programs attended must be available for digital upload at the time of application. Official transcripts must be post-mailed to the address as outlined on the admissions website.
Interview Process & Offer of Admission
After your application has been reviewed and approved, you will move on to the interview stage. Approved applicants will be invited to an interview on Kira Talent, where you will be asked video-recorded and written questions to demonstrate your communication skills and technical knowledge. We will be sending you an interview invitation from KiraTalent, which will provide you with further instructions.
Some applications that move forward in the admission process may be selected for a second mandatory interview remotely (e.g. Skype). The interview, which will be part of the selection process, will consist of a conversation between the applicant and MAccFin representatives. A possible admission decision may take some time after the interview occurs. Applicants will not receive any feedback on this interview.
If you are successful, congratulations! The MAccFin team will extend an offer of admission to you through email, where you will need to confirm your offer and pay your deposit. Please also check your application on the School of Graduate Studies website to see a decision made status change.

I’m having problems with the online application – help!
There are different sources of assistance:

Is a GMAT or GRE required for the application?
No, a GMAT or GRE is not required for the MAccFin application package.
I was in a rush to submit my application by the deadline and I opted to pay offline instead of online. Can I switch to credit card payment now so I don’t have to get a certified cheque and wait for the mail to arrive at SGS?
At this point we are unable to make the switch between payment types. Several processes including the creation of document requirements and the email communication to referees is triggered by the move to payment. Switching types has implications in those processes.
Do I require transcripts from all of the post-secondary institutions attended? Are English translations required?
The application review process will begin with your scanned transcripts alone. Please upload ALL scanned transcripts for each post-secondary program completed, attempted, or in progress.
You may be asked to send us official paper transcripts before an admissions decision is finalized. This can be done by arranging with the issuing institution(s) to send us your official transcripts.
If academic records are interim (pending completion of studies in progress) official final academic records indicating that the degree has been conferred, must be submitted to the graduate office as soon as possible, and before admission can be finalized.
Applicants who attended university(ies) outside North America must provide notarized English translations to accompany all foreign documentation not written in English. If asked to submit original transcripts, academic records must be sent to us by the issuing institution(s), enclosed in a sealed envelope. These may be provided directly from the institution or through the applicant (DO NOT OPEN transcripts issued to applicant). Faxed records are not considered official. Documents will not be returned to the applicant.
Do I send in my official transcripts once I have completed my application?
No, you do not need to submit an official copy of your transcript(s) unless the department makes the request.

If my language of instruction was in English, do I still need to provide English Language Facility test scores?
Applicants whose first language is not English and who have completed a program of study where the language of instruction and examination is not English, must pass an acceptable English Language Facility Test.
If your education took place in any of the following countries (Australia, Barbados, Botswana, Ghana, Guyana, Hong Kong (not Chinese University of Hong Kong graduates), Ireland, Jamaica, Kenya, Lesotho, Liberia, Malawi, Malta, Namibia, New Zealand, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Sierra Leone, Singapore, South Africa, Swaziland, Tanzania, Trinidad and Tobago, Uganda, United Kingdom, United States of America, Zambia, Zimbabwe), you are exempted from the English Language Facility Test.
How do I select my references?
Newly graduated applicants are required to include academic references related to their field of study. Industry/professional references may supplement academic references, particularly for applicants who are not recent graduates.
Once you have identified/qualified the most suitable referees, advise them to comment on your ability to successfully complete the Master of Accounting and Finance program.
How many references can I include in the MAccFin Admissions Application?
The minimum number of references is 2 and the maximum number is 4. Please provide institutional email addresses only. If your referees do not have an institutional email, please contact [email protected]
My referee doesn’t have an institutional email address. What should I do?
Leave the *email address box* blank for any referee that does not have an institutional email address and continue the application. Once the application has been completed and you have paid the application fee, contact [email protected] with the referee’s email address.
I didn’t ask my referee in advance and s/he would rather not submit a reference. Can I add a new referee?
It is recommended that you qualify all referees first. However, if you need to change, add or delete a reference, please contact [email protected]
Are there reference letter forms?
The Master of Accounting and Finance does not have special reference forms. Once you have confirmed your application information and proceeded past the application payment stage (application fee is $250), the system will email your referees and ask them to provide a reference letter on your behalf. Your referees will be asked to submit an electronic copy of the reference as a Word document or PDF. Once they have submitted their letter, they will receive a confirmation email from the University of Toronto, School of Graduate Studies.
When will I know the results of my application?
Applicants will be assessed as their application package is fully complete, you will receive notification that you were shortlisted as soon as February, depending on when you submit your application. The earlier you complete the process the faster you will know your results!
