As an NCAA Division III school, the University of Saint Joseph (USJ) hosts 15 varsity teams, intramurals, and numerous recreation and wellness programs. The University is a member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC).

The O’Connell Athletic Center features a newly renovated fitness center, indoor track, six-lane pool, gymnasium, and newly renovated locker rooms. The OC’s outdoor complex includes six pristine tennis courts, a turf soccer/lacrosse/field hockey field, softball field, and grass practice field.

The University of Saint Joseph Athletic Department has been fully established as an NCAA Division III athletic program since the fall of 1993. The Blue Jays have won GNAC championships in volleyball, women’s basketball, women’s tennis, softball and men’s basketball. The University of Saint Joseph also offers varsity programs in men’s soccer, women’s soccer, men’s cross country, women’s cross country, men’s lacrosse, women’s lacrosse, men’s swimming & diving, women’s swimming & diving, men’s tennis and field hockey.

In 2002, the then Saint Joseph College athletic department was the recipient of the USA TODAY/NCAA Foundation Academic Achievement Award for having the highest overall percentage of graduating student-athletes among the nation’s Division III institutions.

In keeping with the University’s educational and athletic mission statement, all students must be in good academic standing as determined by the University and must also maintain full-time undergraduate status for eligibility on a varsity team. The athletic department at the University of Saint Joseph complements students’ academic experience with a competitive physical regimen. Participation in athletics develops students’ leadership skills, strengthens their problem-solving capabilities, and allows them to maintain their physical, mental, and emotional fitness.

Intramural sports consist of: badminton, basketball, soccer, softball, tennis, volleyball, multi-sport club and walking club. Recreational programs include: Holiday Challenge, Cardio Across America, zumba, exercise buddy contest and free weight bursts, providing diverse athletic opportunities to our campus community.

Directions to the University of Saint Joseph
Take exit 43 off I-84 East or West. At end of the ramp, take a right and an immediate left onto Trout Brook Drive. Continue straight on Trout Brook Drive until intersection of Trout Brook Drive and Asylum Avenue. Take a right on Asylum Avenue and left into driveway of USJ. Follow driveway to back of campus. The O’Connell Center is at the back of the campus next to the track.

Athletic Facilities

The O’Connell Center is home to the University of Saint Joseph athletics, recreation, fitness, and intramurals. The Blue Jays’ volleyball, basketball, and swimming & diving teams make their home inside the O’Connell Center. The gymnasium features a newly refinished floor lined for both men’s and women’s college basketball and volleyball, with bleachers to fit up to 500 spectators. Surrounding the gym is a 1/10th mile suspended jogging track along with banners of honored student-athletes and coaches. The O’Connell Center also features the Fitness Center, men’s and women’s locker rooms, and the University’s athletic training facility. The Fitness Center features Body Master strength equipment, free weights, Stairmasters, Lifecycles, treadmills, and recumbent bikes.

Also located inside the O’Connell Center is the Bruyette Natatorium, a six-lane, 25-yard pool with a one-meter diving board, electronic scoreboard, bleachers, and handicap access. The Blue Jays’ swimming & diving team makes their home in the natatorium hosting several events each season. Adjacent to the pool are men’s and women’s locker rooms and the swim team coach/aquatics director office.

The University of Saint Joseph Athletic Complex boasts USJ’s soccer/lacrosse/field hockey turf field, turf walking/running track, tennis courts, and softball field. The newly constructed soccer/lacrosse/field hockey turf field was completed in the fall of 2019 by AstroTurf and is located on the infield of a four-lane, turf walking/running track. The facility features an electronic scoreboard for soccer, lacrosse, and field hockey and is wired for lights which are expected to be installed in the near future.

The Elizabeth Ferry Speer Tennis Complex features six newly renovated, pristine tennis courts, which were completed by Cape and Island Tennis and Track in the fall of 2019. The revamp features six post tension tennis courts in Biscayne Blue surrounded by Oasis Blue, where the previous tennis courts laid. The courts are lined and fully windscreened with USJ branding.

The Blue Jays call the University of Saint Joseph Athletic Complex softball field home. Located behind the O’Connell Center, the field is fenced in on all sides and has a protective yellow guard around the top of the fence. An all-dirt infield and dugouts on both sides makes the facility both NCAA and high school ready. The Blue Jays softball team has enjoyed much success on the field earning a trip to the NCAA Tournament in 2000 and 2019.

The 4,200-seat home of Hawk basketball opened in 2009 following an extensive renovation. The arena features in-demand amenities for fans and student-athletes alike. For several games each season, Hagan is home to one of the first autism break rooms in the NCAA.

Sean Sweeney ’94 Field

Created in 1929 as the home of Hawk football and named for Sean S. Sweeney ’94 (MBA) in 2014, the field has since hosted more than 1,200 varsity games, matches and track meets. It’s the current home of the varsity men’s and women’s soccer and lacrosse programs.

Ellen Ryan Field

Named for longtime assistant athletics director and Hawks sports pioneer Ellen Ryan, the home of field hockey features a top-of-the-line AstroTurf12 surface, a state-of-the-art irrigation and drainage system, a mobile press box and bleacher seating for 200 fans.

Tennis Complex at the Maguire Campus

With maximum court spacing, individual corner fencing and great sight lines for fans, the tennis complex provides student-athletes with the ability to train and play every day on a top-class surface.

One of the Northeast’s premier collegiate baseball facilities, Smithson Field features an Astro Turf 3D GameDay Grass surface with a dirt pitching mound.

Softball Field

The Hawks christened the softball field in 2012, becoming the third facility in the Atlantic 10 to boast a turf outfield at the time of construction.

Robert Gillin ’49 Boathouse

Set in the center of North America’s largest active rowing community, this is Philadelphia’s newest and largest boathouse. An iconic landmark on and off the water, the Gillin Boathouse is a first-class facility that provides rowers a unique competitive advantage.

Just minutes from Hawk Hill, this municipal park — one of the country’s largest — offers top-notch training venues for Saint Joseph’s runners. From the Wissahickon Trail to the Belmont Plateau, these spots are among the most favored in Philadelphia’s running community.
