The University of Portsmouth is a public university in the city of Portsmouth, Hampshire, England. The history of the university dates back to 1908, when the Park building opened as a Municipal college and public library. It was previously known as Portsmouth Polytechnic until 1992, when it was granted university status through the Further and Higher Education Act 1992. It is ranked among the Top 100 universities under 50 in the world.

The university offers a range of disciplines, from Pharmacy, International relations and politics, to Mechanical Engineering, Paleontology, Criminology, Criminal Justice, among others. The Guardian University Guide 2018 ranked its Sports Science number one in England, while Criminology, English, Social Work, Graphic Design and Fashion and Textiles courses are all in the top 10 across all universities in the UK. Furthermore, 89% of its research conducted in Physics, and 90% of its research in Allied Health Professions (e.g. Dentistry, Nursing and Pharmacy) have been rated as world-leading or internationally excellent in the most recent Research Excellence Framework (REF2014).

General Entry Requirements

They consider a wide range of qualifications for entry. The information below lists the qualifications commonly accepted by the University. A And AS Levels

Most full-time undergraduate applicants to the University apply with, or are taking, A and AS Levels. We normally expect applicants to present between three and four AS, and two to three A Levels, in appropriate subjects. Currently, the University does not make offers using A* grades.
Students are normally over 18 years of age to enter Higher Education in the UK. However, applicants that will be under the age of 18 at the start of the course must provide consent to join the University from a parent or legal guardian. If they give you an offer of a place they will contact you for this information.

Please note that international students cannot apply for part-time courses unless you are the dependant of a current full-time student, studying in the UK, the dependant of someone who has a current UK work permit or the dependant of a UK citizen.

English language requirements

Your level of English must be sufficient for you to study your chosen course, contribute to classes and pass assignments and examinations. As a general guide, they require IELTS 5.5 for foundation, 6.0 for undergraduate and 6.0 to 7.0 for postgraduate entry. Specific scores required depend on the course you choose. Admissions Criteria For Undergraduate Study

Specific entry requirements are detailed on each course page. As a guide, for degree level study, you will need to have the equivalent of:

  • 2 or 3 good ‘A’ Levels (GCE Advanced Level)
  • or a recognised Access/Foundation course
  • or an International Baccalaureate (minimum score 24)
  • or an EDEXCEL (BTEC) National Certificate or Diploma (Merit profile)
  • or High School Leaving Certificate, if it is deemed equivalent to ‘A’ Level Standard
  • Some courses have higher entry requirements, especially where they are recognised by professional bodies.
