Students who are applying for admission to UMD at Shady Grove or for re-enrollment should follow the admission processes outlined on those pages.

Applications are considered complete when the online application and all required documents have been submitted. All materials must be submitted electronically or postmarked by the appropriate deadline for consideration. For freshman applicants, you can track your application status and confirm receipt of application materials online through the Terps Application Portal. You will receive an email after you submit your application with instructions on how to create a portal account. For transfer applicants, you can track the status of your application through the UMD Checklist of your MyCoalition account. It may take up to two weeks for recently submitted materials to be listed as received on your checklist and it is the applicant’s responsibility to confirm receipt of all required materials.

The DMRT Fall 2021 application portfolio includes the following items:

  1. Completed preliminary online application for admission
  2. Completed online application for in-state status classification

  3. Completed supplemental application to be emailed back to [email protected]. Open and complete this downloaded form by using free ADOBE READER, which can be downloaded from the Adobe website.
    1. The Courses in Progress section should include the semester when, and the location where, all remaining requirements will be completed. You must notify the DMRT in writing if there are any changes to the Courses in Progress content.
  4. Personal statement of academic goals (Microsoft Word, not to exceed two typed pages double spaced) to be completed and emailed. Applicants should discuss:
    • Academic goals and objectives
    • Reason(s) for wanting to enter the field of medical laboratory science
    • Strengths and weaknesses in coping with a rigorous science-based curriculum
    • Any other information you believe is important for the Admissions Committee to know about you.
  5. All applicants applying to the DMRT must submit two references as follows:
    1. Professional Reference #1 should be a letter of recommendation from an instructor of a science-based laboratory course (institutional letterhead preferred), together with a completed Recommendation and Evaluation Request Form.
    2. Professional Reference #2 could be a letter of recommendation from a second instructor of a different science-based laboratory course (institutional letterhead preferred) OR from an employer on business letterhead together with a completed Recommendation and Evaluation Request Form.

      Due to the evolving COVID-19 situation, reference letters & evaluation forms will be accepted for this admission cycle to [email protected]  so long as it is delivered via an official college/university/workplace email account and the letters of reference/evaluation forms come to us directly from the individual completing the reference.
  6. An official transcript from every institution where college-level credit was earned must be submitted to the DMRT from the Registrar’s Office.  Official transcripts for courses completed after your application has been sent must be submitted either electronically or by mail within one month of the conclusion of the course.

COVID-19

In the summer session of 2021, UMB schools will deliver didactic curriculum online. This innovative method of delivering didactic instruction responds to the COVID 19 pandemic and decisions made to maintain social distancing in the interest of the personal safety of all involved in the education of UMB students.

In the academic year 2021-2022, UMB expects it will return to some classroom and on-campus didactic instruction, consistent with safety standards, local and regional health conditions, and guidance of public authorities. The ability to offer courses on campus may be delayed or intermittent. UMB may supplement on-campus instruction with online and virtual learning opportunities.

Selected labs and Performance Based Assessments (PBAs) must be done in-person and will be scheduled (or rescheduled) as permitted by circumstances and UMB policies.

For online learning, UMB will reformat the curriculum materials and teaching techniques as necessary to assure that coursework continues to meet the high standards set by UMB and to assure that all learning outcomes are achieved in accordance with accreditation standards and expectations.

Submitting Foreign Coursework for Academic Evaluation

Applications and official transcript(s) from students who completed academic coursework (of the United States (except those students enrolled in a study abroad program through an American institution) mut be received in the Office of Admissions at least six months prior to the date of expected matriculation. Academic transcript evaluations completed by a recognized international credit evaluation service are required for all coursework completed outside of the United States (except those students enrolled in a study abroad program through an American institution). The preferred evaluation service for the DMRT is either:

English Proficiency Requirement

Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is required of applicants who meet any of the following criteria:

  • Applicant is classified by the Office of Records and Registration as an International Student
  • Applicant completed the majority of his/her academic coursework at a college or university outside the United States, English-speaking Canada, United Kingdom (including Ireland), Australia, New Zealand or Commonwealth Caribbean.

EXCEPTION: Students who completed coursework abroad as part of an academic study abroad program sponsored by an American college or university at which they were registered as degree-seeking students will not be required to submit TOEFL scores as their native language is English.

  • The minimum accepted TOEFL scores are 550 (written) or 80 (internet). Test results should be sent to the Office of Records and Registration: code number is 5944.

International Applicants

In addition to the general application materials, all international students are required to provide the following documents to the Office of International Services:

  • Current copy of the I-20 form
  • A copy of the first page of your passport with your personal information
  • A copy of your current VISA stamp from your passport
  • A copy of your I-94 form
  • Documentation of financial solvency (yearly cost of tuition, room & board and personal expenses have been estimated to be a minimum of $29,000)
  • Documentation of proficiency in the English language: (provide one of the following)
    • TOEFL Scores
      • Score of 550 on paper based test
      • Score of 213 on computer based test
      • Score of 80 on internet based test
        OR 
    • Transcript from an American college documenting successful completion of English Composition and an elective course in English (100 level or higher).
