The University of Limerick (UL) is an independent, internationally focused university with over 13,000 students, approximately 13% of whom are international. The University of Limerick offers over 90 taught postgraduate programmes across four faculties – Arts, Humanities & Social Sciences; Business; Education & Health Sciences; and Science & Engineering. Taught programmes include graduate diplomas (duration: 9 months) and master’s (duration: 12 months).

Lero is the Irish Software Engineering Research Centre which brings together leading software engineering (SE) teams from Universities and Institutes of Technology in a coordinated centre of research excellence with a strong industry focus. Lero has raised the level and profile of Irish software engineering research with such effect that it is now one of the best known and highly regarded SE research centres in the world.

The Materials & Surface Science Institute, established in 1998, is a centre of excellence generating state-of-the-art fundamental research on topics of industrial significance in the fields of surface science and materials. Undergraduate at UL

At UL, students have a choice of over 70 undergraduate programmes in the following areas: arts, business, education, engineering, health sciences, humanities, social sciences and science. All undergraduate degree programmes are four-year honours programmes, and awards include BA, BEng, BBs, BSc and LLB. Our portfolio of programmes is constantly evolving to respond to the needs of industry and the interests of our students.

A six-to-eight-month internship (Cooperative Education) is an integral part of all academic programmes. UL has one of the largest Cooperative Education programmes in the EU, and one-third of internships are international, primarily in North America, Europe and South East Asia. Students on Cooperative Education are generally paid, and the experience provides them with a unique advantage when they graduate.

Many of our undergraduate programmes offer students the opportunity to take part in an international exchange or Erasmus (European exchange) programme. UL has over 200 institutional partners worldwide and offers undergraduate exchanges across the EU and in countries such as the USA, Canada, Singapore, China and Thailand.

The employment record of UL graduates is significantly higher than the national average. Approximately 90% of our graduates enter directly into work or further study within six months of graduating.

UL is ranked world number two for International Student Happiness. 94.5% of international students who studied at UL responded that they were happy with their study experience placing UL second out of 199 institutions across the globe. These results are from the I-Graduate International Student Barometer (ISB) 2018, a global benchmark for the international student experience.

Other results from ISB included the UL International Office ranking number 1 out of 51 UK and Ireland universities. UL also scored highest for pre-arrival information for international students. Nationally, UL boasts the best access to and quality of, accommodation; the best campus environment; the best multi-cultural learning environment, the best library; the best internet access on arrival, the best formal welcome and the best sports facilities.

The UL International Office also organises the International Orientation Welcome Programme. This is a week-long organised series of fun events to help you settle in and meet other students. Accommodation

UL offers accommodation in beautiful residences for up to 2,800 students. Six of the seven residential villages are on campus, including Plassey village, Kilmurry village, Thomond village, Dromroe village, Quigley residence and Cappavilla village. Fees vary from €4,768 to €6,916 yearly depending on the choice of room.

Off-campus accommodation at Troy village is a 15 minute walk from the main university campus. The residential villages provide various maintenance and in-house inventory services. Residence rental fees includes facilities such as a swimming pool, sports gym and internet.

Location

The 148 hectare university campus is situated on the banks of River Shannon and surrounded by extensive parkland estates. It is one of the most picturesque campuses in Europe and the campus is ideally located for students to enjoy an active sporting and cultural life. Relaxing cycling and walking tours along the banks of River Shannon and the spectacular Living Bridge provide an opportunity to unwind in natural habitat, while a Farmers’ Market organised every Tuesday lets students witness an array of local produce.

The University is situated just 5km from the city of Limerick and 20 km from Shannon Airport. Limerick is a modern city with a population of 90,000 and is easily accessible by train, bus and taxi.
