A level and GCSE reforms

The University of Hertfordshire has considered the changes to A level and GCSEs from September 2015 and we have not made any major changes to our entry requirements.
A levels

We consider each application on its merits and, although we do look at AS grades (if available) as part of our selection process, we also consider the applicant’s predicted grades, GCSEs, personal statement and reference when making an academic decision.

We understand that schools have adopted a number of approaches to the reforms and we do not expect all applicants to have AS level qualifications.

The University has a long tradition of welcoming applicants from a wide range of backgrounds taking a variety of qualifications and are used to admitting students with a combination of qualifications including A levels and BTEC/Access to HE Diplomas/vocational qualifications.

We will require a pass in the practical element of Science A levels for certain science and engineering courses and this is clearly specified in the individual course entry requirements.

For non-science degrees we require an overall grade with no requirement for a pass in the practical element.
We require GCSE in English Language and Mathematics for all courses (and Science or Double Science where specified on the individual course pages).

Under the old grading structure the required grade is C in all required subjects unless otherwise specified on the individual course pages.

Under the new grading structure we require a grade 4 or above in all required subjects.
History

The university’s history derives from its close links to industry over many years, beginning with the technical college established by the de Havilland Aircraft company as an engineering centre of excellence.
The college later evolved into Hatfield College of Technology and then Hatfield Polytechnic, bringing in other disciplines; it gained university status in 1992.
In 2016 The Duke of Edinburgh opened a new Science Building, a milestone in the development of the university’s College Lane campus.
