It is the flagship university of the University of Delaware system and has been co-educational since its establishment. The University of Delaware received its charter on February 12, 1833, as a state-supported school for teacher training. The school was founded by noted American architect Charles L. Carson and established under the name “Delaware College.” While it was called Delaware College, it was privately supported through funds obtained from the sale of stock, which prevented it from being considered a public institution for much of its early history. In 1846, the state granted it a charter to confer degrees upon students who have “proved their capacity for advanced study.”
