The Master of Science degree in Data Science is an interdisciplinary program that brings together faculty from CU Boulder’s Applied Mathematics, Computer Science, Information Science, and other departments. You will gain a deep understanding of data science through statistics, computer science, and information science and will apply these skills to domains in geospatial analytics, natural language processing, business analytics, and more.

Data science is a multidisciplinary field that uses scientific methods, processes, algorithms and systems to extract knowledge and insights from structured and unstructured data.

This minor provides students with an introduction to the core concepts and skills of data science in computing, statistics and information science to complement existing majors in CMCI fields, in the social sciences, and in the arts and humanities.

The program is specifically designed as an add-on to existing quantitative methods courses and sequences in the social sciences. Students in such degree programs who wish to add data science experience and credentials to their course of study can complete the minor without additional course prerequisites. For this reason, some aspects of the curriculum (particularly the quantitative methods area) are quite flexible, allowing students to acquire this background through subject-specific study in a variety of disciplines.

Data Science & Engineering Sub-plan Requirements

Students must complete the following:

  • Total 30 credits of graduate level approved coursework required
  • Three breadth courses – must earn a B or better grade
  • At least four sub-plan courses – must earn a B or better grade
  • Students may take up to two non-CS approved classes
  • No limit on distance classes

Students enrolled in DSE sub plan must fulfill the following sub plan requirements:

  • Two core courses in Data Science (DS) or Data Engineering (DE)
  • Two general courses in Data Science (DS) or Data Engineering (DE)

You must get a grade of at least a B or better in all DS and/or DE courses to fulfill the requirement. Courses of interest should be chosen in collaboration with your faculty advisor and included in the MS Plan of Study.

This specialization provides learners with hands on experience in use of electronic health records and informatics tools to perform clinical data science. This series of six courses is designed to augment learner’s existing skills in statistics and programming to provide examples of specific challenges, tools, and appropriate interpretations of clinical data.
