UBC Pharmaceutical Sciences Requirements

Our research-intensive MSc program offers students the opportunity to conduct outstanding research projects and receive training in a broad range of fields within pharmaceutical sciences. Pharmacists have specialized knowledge of medicines, ranging from their discovery, chemistry, synthesis, and manufacture to how they work in the body, how they can improve or cure disease, and how to determine if they are working well for a patient. Upon graduation, you’ll be able to choose from a wide range of career opportunities working as an integral member of health-care teams.

Pharmacy practice involves the understanding of medications, their uses and interactions, and patient-centred care. Students admitted to the Entry-to-Practice Doctor of Pharmacy program will learn about pharmacy practice, therapeutics, pharmacology, pharmacokinetics, pathophysiology, pharmacy management, drug safety, and the Canadian health-care system in classroom and practice-lab settings.

You can apply for admission into Pharmacy after a minimum of two years, or 60 undergraduate credits, including specific course requirements. The program satisfies the requirements of the College of Pharmacists of BC for academic qualification for licensing in the Province of British Columbia. Entry is restricted to Canadian citizens and permanent residents.

Our MSc program welcomes students from a wide range of disciplines and geography. Students come to us with previous degrees in pharmacy, pharmaceutical sciences, medicine, biotechnology, biomedical sciences (such as chemistry, biology, biochemistry, microbiology, genetics, pharmacology), biomedical or chemical engineering, economics and epidemiology. More than half of our current graduate student body is comprised of students from countries outside of Canada. Experiential learning and research

Within the Bachelor of Pharmaceutical Sciences degree, you’ll choose one of three streams:

  • General studies: Focus exclusively on coursework.
  • Research focus: Complete a research project or practicum in year 4.
  • Honours with research focus: Complete a research project or practicum in year 4, plus 12 additional credits of coursework.


If your practicum application is successful, you’ll be placed with a government organization or an industrial partner (e.g., a biotech, drug, nutraceutical or personal care company) for one term.  You’ll gain hands-on experience, learn critical skills, and earn 15 credits toward your degree.


If your research application is successful, you’ll work on a research project with a professor from the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences for one term. You’ll learn critical research skills and earn 15 credits toward your degree.

As a Pharmaceutical Sciences student, you’ll have access to state-of-the-art laboratories with high-end research equipment. You’ll also be trained in ultra-high-pressure liquid Chromatography (UHPLC) mass spectrometry, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, microparticle analysis, and microscopy.
