BOZEMAN — Montana State University’s mechanical engineering degree programs have been recognized nationally.
Schools.com ranked MSU No. 5 on its annual list of the best American colleges for mechanical engineering, citing the program’s student-to-faculty ratio, tuition and degree options.
Dan Miller, head of the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering in MSU’s Norm Asbjornson College of Engineering, said the ranking reflects the department’s commitment to providing accessible education with an emphasis on student success.
“While our academic standards are high, anyone can declare our majors and try mechanical engineering,” Miller said, adding that it’s becoming less common for universities to allow anyone to select engineering as their major without meeting course or testing prerequisites.
Miller said the department is also unique for offering a mechanical engineering degree alongside a mechanical engineering technology program, which is often housed in a technical college.
“By having these two majors in the same department, the transition is easy for students who decide that a more applied engineering technology program is a better fit for them,” Miller said.
Last spring there were 1,155 students enrolled in MSU’s mechanical engineering and mechanical engineering technology programs, up slightly from the previous year. The engineering college’s increasing enrollment is a major reason it will expand into the new Norm Asbjornson Hall, which will be completed in early 2019.
The department also offers degrees in industrial and management systems engineering and financial engineering, along with minors in aerospace, building energy systems, engineering management, financial engineering, materials and mechatronics. Research focus areas are design and manufacturing, energy systems, materials and structures, measurement systems, service engineering and human factors engineering.
Other recent recognition for the department includes mechanical engineering graduate Kristopher Olshefski winning a Graduate Research Fellowship from the National Science Foundation, assistant professor Mark Owkes winning a $500,000 CAREER award from NSF, and mechanical engineering student Gabe Van Dalsem working on a satellite launched from the International Space Station in May.
