UMass Lowell Physical Therapy

The UMass Lowell Doctor of Physical Therapy program prepares students to diagnose and treat movement dysfunction to help people live healthier lives. Supporting the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) core values as demonstrated throughout the curriculum, our program aligns with the vision of the APTA to transform society by optimizing movement to improve the human experience. 

The curriculum includes 95 credits of coursework and 34 weeks of clinical education experience. It provides a comprehensive foundation in the art and science of physical therapy. Methods of instruction include classroom lecture and discussion, small group/problem-based learning, and skill development during laboratory and clinical experiences. Emphasis is placed on the development of clinical decision-making and critical inquiry skills across the curriculum.

The clinical education program consists of three extended clinical education experiences, of 10, 12, and 12 weeks duration respectively, for a total of 34 weeks. Students experience a variety of practice settings, including acute care, sub-acute rehabilitation, outpatient orthopedic, as well as other more specialized settings, e.g. pediatric, geriatric, sports medicine, women’s health, and home care.

Clinical Experiences
The clinical education program consists of 35 weeks (four extended clinical education experiences eight weeks in length and two shorter integrated experiences, one and two weeks in length). Students experience a variety of practice settings and patient populations in preparation for general practice and select sites from a total of approximately 300 agencies. These generally include one acute care hospital, one rehabilitation hospital, and one specialty area clinical experience.

Faculty
There are 12 full-time and 7 part-time faculty members. All of the full-time faculty hold doctoral degrees; four are certified as clinical specialists (Cardiopulmonary, Orthopedics, Hand, Geriatrics). Faculty regularly engage in clinical practice, research, and community service. The faculty to student ratio is 1:8.

Enrollment
Total enrollment in the University is 12,034. Thirty-six students are accepted into the physical therapy program annually for a total enrollment of 108 students. The department offers an undergraduate major in exercise physiology that provides all of the required prerequisites for admission into the physical therapy program. Highly qualified UML exercise physiology undergraduates (3.5 overall GPA, 3.5 science GPA) may be admitted into the DPT program in the Fall of their senior year to matriculate when the BS degree is completed.

Admission
Requirements for admission into the DPT program include: a baccalaureate degree with a minimum overall grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 and a minimum science GPA of 3.0; Graduate Record Examination (GRE); three letters of reference (one from a physical therapist); and documentation of 35 hours of physical therapy experience. Prerequisites include: 3 semester hours each of psychology, statistics; 8 semester hours each of anatomy and physiology, physics, and chemistry (with labs).; 3 semester hours each of exercise physiology and kinesiology.

Outcomes
3-year average (2010-2012); 82% of admitted students graduate from the program. 100% of the graduates passed the licensure exam. 100% of the graduates are employed within 6 months.

Freshman Admission Requirements to the Exercise Science Program (Clinical Option or Exercise & Fitness Management Option)

  • High school GPA of 3.25 or better.
  • Completion of college prep courses including: English, biology and chemistry.
  • Recommended: high school pre-calculus or calculus, and physics.
  • Combined SAT scores totaling at least 1080 (mathematics and verbal).
  • Evidence of good health through a physical exam, which attests to the student’s ability to actively and safely participate in all phases of laboratory work.

UMass Lowell Physical Therapy Transfer Admission Requirements

UMass Lowell students and students from other colleges or universities are invited to apply to the Exercise Science BS program. Requirements include:

  • A cumulative GPA of 2.7
  • A science GPA of 2.7 in at least one, two-semester required science sequence of either: Anatomy and Physiology I and II, Physiological Chemistry or General Chemistry I and II, or General Physics I and II.

Students must have successfully completed at least one of the two-semester prerequisite science sequences identified above, and be on track to complete all prerequisite science course sequences by the completion of their fourth semester at UML. This means that students must complete all prerequisite science courses prior to beginning professional courses (EXER.xxxx) in the Junior year of the curriculum (see degree pathway).

Students who meet the qualifications as incoming freshmen are notified in their letter of acceptance to the university from Admissions. Students must be enrolled in the Clinical Option to be eligible. Students will also obtain real-world experience by completing a required 35 hours of physical therapy observation prior to your senior year. 

The program requirements are:

  • Completion of the B.S. in Exercise Science program with an overall GPA of 3.40 or higher
  • Completion of the DPT pre-requisite science courses outlined below with an earned GPA of 3.40 or higher:
    • Anatomy & Physiology I & II, with labs
    • Chemistry I & II, with labs
    • Physics I & II, with labs
    • Exercise Physiology lecture
    • Kinesiology lecture

Your class GPA will be calculated after the end of your junior year of studies and again after your senior year is completed. GPA calculation will occur once more at the end of your senior year prior to matriculation into the program.

Your completed application package shall include:

  2. Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) Scores
    • All international applicants are required to submit results of the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) exam except citizens of Australia, Canada (except Quebec), United Kingdom, Ireland, New Zealand, Guyana and English Speaking countries of Africa and West Indies. You are responsible for making arrangements to take the test.

First-year students entering in fall 2018 had an average GPA of 3.59 and an average combined Evidence Based Reading and Math SAT score of 1239 (ACT equivalent 26). Along with all other public universities and colleges in the Massachusetts system, UMass Lowell is not using the Writing Score.

Admissions counselors and policy makers are sensitive to the factors that may result in accomplished students having a lower-than-expected GPA or SAT score. The applications of students who don’t meet the standards, but for whom UMass Lowell otherwise seems like a good match, are reviewed individually.

Applicants have the option to decide whether to have standardized test scores used in the evaluation process. Applicants should carefully read our No Test Option Frequently Asked Questions before they select this option.

ACADEMIC REQUIREMENTS

Starting in your sophomore year of high school, it will be helpful to know the academic requirements of the colleges that interest you. Knowing these requirements will allow you to select and complete these required courses before you graduate from high school. 

Successful UMass Lowell applicants will have completed the following college preparatory level courses by the end of senior year:

  • English: 4 Courses
  • Mathematics: 4 courses (Algebra I &II and Geometry or Trigonometry, or comparable coursework) including mathematics during the final year of high school
  • Sciences: 3 courses (drawn from Natural Science and/or Physical Science and/or Technology/Engineering), including 3 courses with laboratory work
  • Social Sciences: 2 Courses (including 1 course in U.S. history)
  • Foreign Language: 2 Courses (in a single language)
  • Electives: 2 Courses (from the above subjects or from the arts & humanities or computer sciences)

NOTE:

  • If you are interested in studying math, science or engineering, it is strongly recommended that you take four years of science.
  • Students who have documented learning differences may not need to fulfill the foreign language requirements if appropriate paperwork is submitted.
