The examinations are run by the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA), and consist of three parts: the Common Professional Examination (CPE), the Professional Skills Course (PSC) and the Final Assessment.
The CPE is a computer-based test that takes place over two days, on Saturdays, throughout the year. It contains questions on English law and procedure, together with an essay section on a subject from either company law or consumer credit law.
The PSC consists of a week-long course at one of six centres around England and Wales. It covers a range of topics including how to research cases, drafting legal documents and preparing clients for meetings with lawyers.
The final assessment is a three-hour exam consisting of two written papers on Company Law, Criminal Law, Conveyancing Law and Practice or Trusts Law. These will be taken after completion of both the CPE and PSC
