In partnership with the California Institute of Technology (Caltech), this combined MD-PhD program focuses on training physician-scientists, exploring topics including engineering, social sciences, bedside research, and health policy. The program seeks out students with a “life-long commitment” to research and leadership. Students complete the medical portion of their education at the David Geffen School of Medicine and their PhD within a UCLA graduate program. Annually, two students will complete their graduate training at Caltech.
Through this program, students receive training to become leaders in medicine in underserved populations within the U.S. and abroad. Twenty-four students are selected for this community-based program in medical education, which emphasizes the humane aspects of medicine and diversity.
PRIME-LA students focus on addressing real problems in healthcare through leadership and advocacy, emphasizing healthcare disparities in disadvantaged and underserved populations in California and the entire country. Participants complete the traditional MD curriculum, along with special courses. They will also undertake research projects relating to healthcare access problems and clerkships in clinical arenas that focus on these populations, before completing an advanced degree, such as an MBA, MPH, MPP, or MS.

In making this statement, we are cognizant of the fact that some undergraduate schools are providing an option for students to take courses either for grades or on a Pass/Fail basis. We therefore want to be explicit that applicants should not feel pressured by us to choose the graded option. Students and their families are facing many challenges at the moment – maybe even life and death challenges. The pressure for grades need not be one of them. Pass/Fail and Credit/No-Credit grades will be accepted for admissions consideration, without prejudice, for courses taken during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Online Courses (or finishing courses on-line)
Online courses or courses moved to virtual delivery due to the COVID-19 pandemic will be acceptable for admissions consideration, as long as these class grades appear on your official transcript of grades from your accredited institution.
MCAT Test Changes
We remain sensitive to the impact that COVID-19 has on application submissions and MCAT score availability. We will require applicants to have taken the MCAT before we make admissions decisions for the Class of 2026. Accordingly, applicants should not delay applying simply because an MCAT score is not yet available. We are committed to moving applications forward in the review process even if your MCAT score is not available by the October 1, 2021, application deadline. Provided that you have taken the MCAT by September 28, 2021, your application will be reviewed.
