Data science brings together computational and statistical skills for data-driven problem-solving. This program will equip students with the analytical tools to design sophisticated technical solutions using modern computational methods and with an emphasis on rigorous statistical thinking.

The programme combines training in core statistical and machine learning methodology, beginning at an introductory level, with a range of optional modules covering more specialised knowledge in statistical computing and modelling. Students will take one compulsory module and up to two additional modules in computer science, with the remaining modules (including the research project) taken mainly from within statistical science.

The programme is accessible to students with undergraduate degrees in a related quantitative discipline (such as mathematics, statistics, economics, actuarial science), who wish to gain advanced training in statistical analysis and computation to enable them to enter specialist employment or academic research.

UCL Online Masters Data Science

A minimum of an upper second-class Bachelor’s degree in a quantitative discipline from a UK university or an overseas qualification of an equivalent standard. Knowledge of mathematical methods and linear algebra at university level is expected, along with evidence of familiarity with introductory probability, statistics and computer programming. Prior experience in a high-level programming language (e.g. R/matlab/python) is a requirement. Relevant professional experience will also be taken into consideration.

English language requirements

If your education has not been conducted in the English language, you will be expected to demonstrate evidence of an adequate level of English proficiency.

Course Description

This MSc will equip students with the analytical tools to design sophisticated technical solutions using modern computational methods and with an emphasis on rigorous statistical thinking
  • The program combines training in core statistical and machine learning methodology, beginning at an introductory level, with a range of optional modules covering more specialized knowledge in statistical computing and modeling. Students choosing the statistics specialization will take one compulsory module and up to two additional modules in computer science, with the remaining modules (including the research project) taken mainly from within UCL Statistical Science
  • The program consists of four core modules (60 credits), four optional modules (60 credits) and a research dissertation/report (60 credits)

UCL data science and machine learning

The MSc Data Science and Machine Learning at UCL brings together computational and statistical skills and machine learning for data-driven problem solving. This rapidly expanding area includes deep learning, large-scale data analysis and has applications in e-commerce, search/information retrieval, natural language modelling, finance, bioinformatics and related areas in artificial intelligence. As a student on the MSc Data Science and Machine Learning, you will develop an understanding of core machine learning methodologies and statistical science, combined with a set of more specialised and advanced topics covering computing and statistical modelling. 

Students on this programme will take modules to the value of 180 credits, on successful completion of which they will be awarded MSc in Data Science and Machine Learning.

The programme provides a sound basis for those embarking on a career in research or development or taking up positions within industry where machine learning is currently applied or will be applied in the future, such as finance, banking and insurance, retail and web-commerce, pharmaceuticals, computer security and web search.
