Popularity of Aerospace Engineering at UC Davis

During the 2019-2020 academic year, University of California – Davis handed out 76 bachelor’s degrees in aerospace and aeronautical engineering. Due to this, the school was ranked #42 in popularity out of all colleges and universities that offer this degree. This is an increase of 36% over the previous year when 56 degrees were handed out.

Aerospace science and engineering is the branch of engineering that applies scientific knowledge to the design, manufacture and operation of aircraft. Our Bachelor of Science degree in Aerospace Science and Engineering provides a broad background and fundamental education in mathematics, the physical sciences and the engineering sciences. These fundamentals, when complemented by the required technical courses, prepare students for employment in government or industry, while simultaneously establishing an excellent foundation for graduate studies.

The fundamental disciplines of this branch of engineering apply to all bodies and vehicles whose applied loads are influenced by aerodynamic forces. Within this context, aeronautical engineers are involved with automobiles, trains, ships and submarines, aircraft, rockets and missiles, sports equipment and a variety of energy systems. Courses in fundamental engineering principles are supplemented with courses in propulsion, aerodynamics, performance, stability and control, aircraft preliminary design, aeronautical structures and aeroelasticity.

A broad range of technical elective courses is available. Some students choose these electives from different areas of study in order to begin developing a specialty. Others choose from several areas in order to broaden their background in the sciences and engineering. Typical aerospace science and engineering specialties include aero-thermodynamics, propulsion systems, aircraft performance, stability and control, aeronautical structures, aeroelasticity, flight testing, space systems design or component and mechanism design. Students should consult with a faculty advisor before selecting technical electives.

Students applying for transfer admission to selective majors must meet additional course and GPA requirements. All courses must be taken for a letter grade with no grade less than C. All major preparatory course requirements must be completed by the end of spring term before fall enrollment.

All majors in the College of Engineering are selective and have additional transfer requirements. Overall UC-transferable coursework must meet a minimum 3.10 GPA and a technical 3.20 GPA.Applicants applying for a TAG must meet higher GPA requirements: Both overall UC-transferable coursework and major preparation GPAs must meet a minimum 3.5 GPA.

Students are expected to take courses comparable to the UC Davis course requirements as long as they are offered at the California Community College (CCC) they attend. When the ASSIST website indicates “no comparable course” or “not articulated,” the selective major course requirement will be waived for UC Davis admission/TAG, but must be completed after enrolling at UC Davis. You can find CCC courses that are comparable to UC Davis courses using the ASSIST website.

Preparation for all Engineering majors

Requirements in addition to general admission requirements and TAG criteria:

  • Complete the following coursework and maintain a 3.20 GPA in the entire group of courses
    • Chemistry 2A (not required for Computer Engineering)
    • Mathematics 21A/B/C/D
    • Mathematics 22A/B
    • Physics 9A/B
    • Physics 9C (not required for Environmental Engineering)

TAG applicants for fall 2022 and later must achieve a minimum overall 3.50 GPA in UC-transferable coursework and a 3.50 in their major preparation GPA.

Aerospace Science and Engineering

Requirements in addition to general admission requirements and TAG criteria:

  • Complete the following coursework and maintain a 3.20 GPA in the entire group of courses
    • Chemistry 2A/B
    • Communication 1 or 3 or Engineering 3
    • Engineering 4, 17, 35 and 45
    • Engineering 6
      OR Engineering Computer Science (ENG CS) 36A*
    • Mathematics 21A/B/C/D
    • Mathematics 22A/B
    • Physics 9A/B/C
    • English 3 OR University Writing Program 1

*For F’23 applicants, ENG CS 36A will no longer be an option.

TAG applicants for fall 2022 and later must achieve a minimum overall 3.50 GPA in UC-transferable coursework and a 3.50 in their major preparation GPA.

The 2022 U.S. News and World Report rankings of America’s Best Colleges show that UC Davis’ College of Engineering is moving up the list. The College of Engineering was ranked 27 out of 206 universities that offer doctoral programs, which is up one place from last year.

Highlights from the report:

  • The overall campus ranking for UC Davis was 10 among public institutions and 38 among both public and private universities.
  • We were ranked 16 (tie) among public undergraduate engineering programs whose highest degree is a doctorate.
  • We were ranked 27 overall among both private and public undergraduate engineering programs whose highest degree is a doctorate compared to 28 in 2021.

  • Biological and agricultural engineering: ranked 2 (tie)  – up 5 places from last year
  • Computer science: ranked 31 (tie) – up 5 places from last year
  • Civil engineering: ranked 14 (tie)
