The University of British Columbia (UBC) is a public research university located in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Founded in 1908 as the McGill University College of British Columbia, the school became independent and adopted its current name in 1915. It is British Columbias oldest institution of higher learning and has over 60,000 students at its Vancouver and Okanagan Valley campuses.
The university is modelled on the American state university, with an emphasis on extension work and applied research. The president, appointed by the board, is accountable to the board for ensuring that UBC maintains high standards of academic excellence and adheres to the stated mission and policies. UBC’s 11 faculties and 22 satellite campuses offer a wide range of programs in English, French, arts, science and applied science. These programs lead to bachelor’s degrees, master’s degrees and doctoral degrees through several general degree-granting departments such as Arts (including Music), Humanities (including Languages), Science (including Mathematics) or Applied Science (including Computing Science).
