Let’s talk finances. Enrolling on a degree programme at THUAS also means that you must pay tuition fees. There are 3 different fees:

Statutory tuition fee€ 2,083€ 2,143
Reduced statutory fee€ 1,041€ 1,071
Institutional tuition fee€ 8,050€ 8,375

You’ll either pay the statutory tuition fee set by the government or an institutional tuition fee set by THUAS. These amounts are reviewed every year.

Which fee applies to you?

How much you pay depends on three things – your nationality, if you have a higher education diploma and the degree programme you’ve chosen.

You may pay the statutory tuition fee if…

  • you’re an EU national, from Iceland, Liechtenstein, Monaco, Norway, San Marino, Suriname or Switzerland, or are eligible for student finance with your Dutch residence permit. For this you need a Type II, III, IV or V Dutch residence permit or, in some cases, a Type I residence permit.
  • you don’t have an associate or bachelor’s degree from a university in the Netherlands at the start of your bachelor’s degree programme, or you don’t already have an associate, bachelor’s or master’s degree from a university in Holland at the start of your associate degree programme
  • this is the first time you’re enrolling in a bachelor’s degree or study programme in healthcare. You’ll pay the statutory tuition fee even if you already have a bachelor’s degree

How much in tuition fees you will have to pay is based on the information known at The Hague University of Applied Sciences. In case of relevant changes in this information, the tuition fees will be adjusted accordingly.

Please refer to the website of the Dutch government for information on the impact of Brexit on tuition fees for British nationals.

Reduced statutory fee

Do you qualify for the statutory rate and are you entering Dutch higher education for the first time? Then you qualify for a 50% discount in tuition fees. You’ll be charged the reduced statutory fee for your first year of enrolment.
If you’re starting a Dutch-taught teacher education programme you qualify for an additional year of 50% reduction of the tuition fee.

Please note: After this period you’ll have to pay the full statutory rate. You can find more information on the government website.

Brexit and tuition fees for British nationals

On 31 January 2020 the United Kingdom left the European Union. Until 31 December 2020 a transition period is in place. British nationals moving to the Netherlands before the end of the transition period will be treated as EU citizens, as long as they are registered in the Personal Records Database of the Netherlands no later than 31 December 2020. Please refer to the website of the Dutch government for more information.

How to pay your tuition fees

Depending on your nationality and banking country, one or more of the following payment options are available for you:

  • You set up a direct debit authorization:
If you’ve a bank account with an IBAN number in an EU country, Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Switzerland, Monaco or San Marino, you can set up a direct debit payment to allow us to deduct the fees from your account on the agreed dates. This can be  done via Studielink as of 1 June.
You can choose to pay your tuition fees all at once, or in nine instalments.
An overview of the dates and amounts of each tuition fee instalment is available on our FAQ page. Before each instalment, please make sure to have sufficient funds in your account. If you miss a payment, please also refer to our FAQs to find out what to do.
  • Your employer will pay for tuition fees:
We can send an invoice. Please complete a guarantor declaration together with your employer and return it to us.
  • You are also enrolled at another Dutch university and have paid tuition fees there:
If you are eligible to pay the (reduced) statutory tuition fee then you can ask the other university to issue a proof of tuition fee payment (in Dutch: BBC). Send the original BBC to the Enrolment Centre and then your payment obligation has been met. If you need THUAS to issue a BBC for another university, please check our FAQs.
  • You will transfer the tuition fee to THUAS’s bank account:
Setting up a direct debit via Studielink is only possible if you have a bank account in the countries mentioned above. If your bank is in another country, you’ll need to pay the entire balance in one go. Please find full payment instructions on the confirmation form and don’t forget to send a copy of the bank transfer along with the confirmation form.
  • Your tuition fee is part of your package fee payment:
If you need THUAS to apply for your Dutch residence permit (and entry visa), you will usually be asked to pay a package fee that includes your tuition fee.

Some important notes:

  • Please make sure you arrange your payment as soon as possible, but no later than 31 August, or you won’t be able to start on 1 September. Exception: Package fee payments have an earlier deadline.
  • If your enrolment starts at a later date than 1 September, your tuition fees will be changed accordingly. For each month of enrolment you will be charged 1/12th of the applicable tuition fee.
