If you intend to get into TCNJ, the first thing to look at is the acceptance rate. This tells you how competitive the school is and how serious their requirements are.

The acceptance rate at TCNJ is 49%. For every 100 applicants, 49 are admitted.

This means the college is moderately selective. The College expects you to meet their requirements for GPA and SAT/ACT scores, but they’re more flexible than other Colleges.

 If you exceed their requirements, you have an excellent chance of getting in. But if you don’t, you might be one of the unlucky minority that gets a rejection letter.

As earlier said, College of New Jersey admissions is moderately selective with an acceptance rate of 49%.

Applicants admitted to the College of New Jersey have an SAT score between 1160 and 1360 or an ACT score of 25 and 30.

However, candidates amounting to one quarter of admitted applicants achieved scores above these ranges.

The record of course selection, grades, GPA, class rank, and the strength of the curriculum provides the most accurate predictor of a student’s chance for success in college.

While there are no minimum transcript requirements for admission, recently admitted students averaged an A/A- GPA and a rank in the top 15% of their graduating class.

TCNJ takes a holistic approach to the review of our applicants, considering student abilities and involvement beyond academics.

In light of the extraordinary circumstances precipitated by the COVID-19 pandemic and after a great deal of consideration, The College of New Jersey’s Office of Admissions intends to implement a test-optional policy for students applying to the College as first-year students beginning with the 2020-2021 admission cycle.

The test-optional admissions policy will be for a 3-year period, beginning with applicants who apply for the Fall 2021 semester.

Starting with the Fall 2021 applicant class, first-year applicants have a choice about whether or not to submit SAT or ACT scores to be considered for undergraduate admission to The College of New Jersey.

Historically, admitted students have averaged a 1265 on the Math and Reading sections of the SAT and a 28 on the ACT.

At the end of the 3-year test-optional period, TCNJ will determine whether to reinstate a testing requirement for undergraduate applicants or to extend the test-optional policy. Find the necessary requirements below:

TCJN Admission Requirements

Before we begin, you should know that this application process attracts a $75 application fee. There are two methods of making your non-refundable payment:

• Submit payment through the Common Application or Coalition Application. This invariably means;
• Mail check/money order by selecting “Fee Waiver” on the Common Application or Coalition Application and mailing payment to The Office of Admissions, First-year Applicant.

TCNJ will waive a student’s application fee if they submit a paper copy of one of the following:

• College Board Fee Waiver
• NACAC Fee Waiver
• TCNJ Out-of-State Fee Waiver
• National Merit Semifinalist/National Achievement Fee Waiver
• Common Application Fee Waiver (verified by school counselor)
• Coalition Application Fee Waiver (verified by school counselor)
• A formal letter from a student’s school counselor (must contain specific reasons why the counselor believes a waiver is necessary for this student)

Academic Major

Students can declare an official TCNJ program of study on their application if they are leaning toward a particular major. They can also apply “Undeclared” in several of our seven academic schools or to the college as a whole.

High School Transcripts

An official high school transcript must be sent to The Office of Undergraduate Admissions directly from the high school office (otherwise, they will not be considered official).

This can be submitted through Naviance or mailed to TCNJ’s Office of Admissions, Attn: First-year Applicant. The Common Application secondary school report does not need to be submitted.

If you attended high school and/or college outside of the United States, your transcript will need to be evaluated by an United States agency that provides foreign credentials evaluations before being sent to TCNJ.

Official Test Scores

As mentioned above, The College of New Jersey’s Office of Admissions will implement a test-optional policy for students applying to the College as first-year students beginning with the 2020-2021 admission cycle.

While standardized test scores will not be required, applicants interested in sharing their scores are still encouraged to do so.

Scores must be sent from the official testing agency or printed on an official school transcript.

TCNJ will superscore multiple test dates from both the SAT and ACT, respectively.

Recommendations

TCNJ strongly encourages first-year applicants to submit 2-3 letters of recommendation. One must be from a teacher.

The other letters can come from other teachers, school counselors, coaches, employers, or extracurricular advisors. It is not necessary to use The Common Application Teacher Evaluation form if a recommendation is being mailed to TCNJ.

Application Essay

The Common Application or the Coalition Application essay is the official essay used in the evaluation process. 

TCNJ also requires a secondary writing prompt designed to explore your interest in The College in more detail.

Activity Resume

In addition to filling out the activities list on The Common Application or The Coalition Application, applicants are encouraged to submit an Activity Resume to detail involvement in clubs and organizations, employment, internships, volunteering, education, etc.

Academic Transcripts

All First-year applicants must submit official high school transcripts. Transfer Students must submit all College/University transcripts and, depending on the number of credits earned, secondary school transcripts.

In most cases, transcripts must be submitted to a United States agency that provides foreign credentials evaluations before being sent to TCNJ.

In addition, most applicants applying for freshman (first-year) admission will need a document-by-document or a general report evaluation of your secondary transcript.

All students applying for transfer admission in addition to the document-by document evaluation will need a course-by-course evaluation converted to U.S. credits and grades for any college or university transcripts.

All foreign institutions must have the equivalent to regional accreditation in the United States.  

Students enrolled in an International Baccalaureate program, in the U.S. or overseas, do not have to submit their transcript to an evaluation agency.

Standardized Test Scores

TCNJ is going test-optional (SAT or ACT) for the next three years starting with the 2020–21 admissions cycle. We take a holistic approach to the review of our applicants, considering student interests and involvement beyond academics.

They still welcome students to submit their test scores. Their holistic approach to application review provides you with the flexibility to evaluate academic and extracurricular accomplishments within a student’s individual context.

There will also be additional opportunities throughout the application process for students to demonstrate their interest in our programs and their dedication to pursuing their field of interest at TCNJ.

TCNJ will continue to require TOEFL or IELTS scores if English is not the applicant’s native language or if English is not the language of instruction in the high school or university.

A minimum score of 90 is recommended for the Internet Based TOEFL exam and a score of 7.0 or higher is recommended for the IELTS.

1. Harvard University

The John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences is the newest school at Harvard University, having been established in 2007. Its roots are in the Lawrence Scientific School, which was founded in 1847 and became a school in its own right in 2007.

The school covers a number of teaching areas such as applied mathematics, applied physics, bioengineering, computer science, electrical engineering, environmental science and engineering, and materials science and mechanical engineering.

Stanford University’s School of Engineering has been at the cutting edge of new technology and innovation for the past century.

3. University of California, Berkeley

The College of Engineering is one of 14 schools and colleges at the University of California, Berkeley. It was established in 1931.

Students can choose to pursue a number of different areas, including civil and environmental engineering, mechanical engineering and nuclear engineering, among others.

4. Massachusetts Institute of Technology

The MIT School of Engineering is one of five schools at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and is the largest of the five.

The school has eight academic departments and two interdisciplinary institutes. Departments include aeronautics and astronautics, biological engineering, mechanical engineering, nuclear science and engineering, among others.

5. University of Cambridge

The University of Cambridge’s engineering undergraduate course is four years long. In the recently released 2022 U.S. News & World Report Best Undergraduate Engineering Programs rankings, the Penn State College of Engineering ranks No. 21 in the country, advancing one place from last year’s report. Among public engineering programs, Penn State ranks 12th in the nation.
