SOP for Automation and Control Engineering

Automation & Control Engineering is a branch of electrical engineering, which deals with the design, construction and application of automated systems. Automation deals with the use of control theory to regulate automatically the operation of industrial processes, equipment and machinery. Automation and control systems are used in all areas of industry including manufacturing, transportation and process industries that require monitoring and control at varying levels of complexity.

This software package includes:

1) SCADA HMI Software (Human Machine Interface)

2) PLC Software (Programmable Logic Controller)

1.0 Introduction

1.1 Purpose

This SOP is to provide a guideline on safety, operability and performance (SOP) requirements for automated control systems. The purpose of this SOP is to ensure that all automated control system is safe, operable and perform as intended during normal operation and under abnormal operation conditions. This SOP covers all process automation systems including Safety Instrumented Systems (SISs), Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition (SCADA), Distributed Control Systems (DCSs), Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs), Fieldbuses, etc., used in any industrial process plant such as chemical plants, refineries, power plants, paper mills, etc.

2.0 Scope

2.1 This SOP applies to all industrial facilities that use automated control systems including Industrial Control System (ICS) controllers located at remote locations connected via communication lines such as Ethernet or modems; Local Area Networks (LANs) or Wide Area Networks (WANs); Remote Terminal Units (RTUs) used in remote locations connected via communication lines such as Ethernet or modems; Programmable Logic Controllers
