Sean Sutton to become Head Coach Adviser
The Texas Tech men’s basketball team announced on Wednesday, Sept. 27, that Sean Sutton will join the staff as an adviser to coach Chris Beard.
Sutton has been a part of 13 NCAA Tournaments, seven NCAA Sweet 16’s and three NCAA Elite Eight appearances, according to a Tech Athletics news release. He also was a part of two NCAA Final Four appearances.
He has 22 years of collegiate coaching experience and has either played with or coached 24 NBA players, according to the release.
“It’s an honor and a privilege to join Chris Beard’s staff at Texas Tech,” Sutton said in the release. “Chris has been a loyal friend and someone that I’ve had tremendous respect for through the years in the coaching profession. I have always admired his passion for basketball, his integrity, his relentless work ethic and his devotion to his players. Chris is a very gifted coach, an excellent recruiter and one of the most competitive people I’ve ever been around. I’m excited about the opportunity to work under his leadership, be a part of his outstanding coaching staff, and rejoining the Big 12 conference which is the one of the premier leagues in the country.”
In his coaching career, Sutton has tallied 469 wins and a record of 39-29 while coaching at Oklahoma State from 2006-2008, according to the release. During his 15-year tenure as an assistant coach for the Cowboys, he compiled 11 seasons with 20 or more wins.
Sutton has spent the last six years as an assistant coach at Oral Roberts before coming to Tech, according to the release. While working with the Golden Eagles, he registered 20-win season and four postseason appearances. In his first season as an assistant coach, Oral Roberts had a 27-win season and won the Summit League regular season title during the 2011-2012 season.
