Extended campus facilities include a wide variety of community healthcare agencies for clinical experience. The School of Nursing has integrated extensive simulation labs which provide an enhanced learning experience.

- Is full-time, occuring over five (5) semesters/twenty-three (23) months
- Clinical hours earned through variety of settings: hospitals, community clinics, long term care, home care, and community health agencies
- Upon completion of the program, students are prepared and eligible to take the national licensing exam to become a registered nurse (NCLEX-RN)
- Graduates are eligible for Public Health Nursing certification in California upon licensure as a Registered Nurse
The Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing at San Jose State University is accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (http://www.ccneaccreditation.org). This program is also approved by the California Board of Registered Nurses. Please see the Professional Licensure and Disclosure information.
Misson of the BSN Program
To prepare students in professional nursing practice to work as staff nurses in the following areas: maternity, pediatrics, medical-surgical nursing, gerontology, psychiatric/mental health, and public/community health nursing. Our students will be well-equipped to adapt to changing healthcare needs and environments, and to serve society through civic engagement and lifelong learning.
Admissions
The Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing is an impacted major, which imposes supplemental criteria that all students must meet. The impaction criteria have changed as of Summer 2020 due to COVID-19. All future students are advised to read the BSN Information Packet and Advising Slides (both available in the Resources section) for detailed information of the program and application process.
To be admitted to the program, there is a dual application process. Applicants must be eligible for both, the university and the program, in order to be admitted.
- Apply to the university (if a transfer or prior baccalaureate student)
Complete all university transfer requirements.
Complete university application through Cal State Apply by deadline (requires a fee). - Apply to the nursing program
Complete all nursing prerequisites and the TEAS exam prior to applying (No courses can be in progress during application period).
Complete nursing program application through NursingCAS by deadline (requires a fee).
Eligibility and Prerequisites
Students that are brand new to nursing may apply. Applicants must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident. DACA students need to complete an additional form; please contact the nursing department for more information. Applicants may apply to the Nursing program up to two (2) times. The program accepts transfers, current SJSU students, and post baccalaureates (2nd bachelor’s). See Application Procedures and Deadlines for instructions on how to complete the applications.
Freshman
Freshman cannot be admitted to SJSU as a nursing major. Instead, they can be admitted as Undeclared/Pre-Nursing or to an alternate major. The Undeclared/Pre-Nursing designation does not guarantee admission into the nursing major. Students must work closely with Undeclared/Pre-Nursing advisors regarding schedule planning for prerequisite coursework. Ideally, students will apply to the nursing major during the sophomore year.
Postbaccalaureates (Second Bachelor’s Degree)
Students that are seeking a second bachelor’s degree may apply. Prior degrees must be from a regionally accredited institution and accepted by the university to be eligible. Post baccalaureates must complete the nursing program requirements (prerequisite courses, corequisite courses, and the TEAS exam). Students must also be CSU eligible and have a minimum GPA of 2.5 in the last sixty (60) units in order to be eligible. Due to impaction, the university does not admit postbaccalaureate students to other majors. If a student is not selected by the nursing department, they are not eligible for any other major.
Military Members [pdf]
Beginning January 1, 2017, U.S. military veterans may receive priority selection for the nursing program. This includes those who have completed active duty, have an honorable discharge (DD214), and meet the minimum program and university requirements. Two spaces will be held per application cycle. After these two spaces are filled, other applicants with prior service will be considered and ranked with others in the regular selection process.
Prerequisite Courses
To be eligible for admission, students must have a minimum GPA of 3.2 for all eight (8) prerequisite courses combined (see BS Info Packet for details: available in the Resources section). The following courses must be completed prior to applying, with a “C” grade or better:
- BIOL 65 Human Anatomy* (4 units)
- BIOL 66 Human Physiology* (5 units)
- MICR 20 General Bacteriology* (5 units)
- ENGL 1A Composition (3 units)
- STAT 95 Elementary Statistics (3 units)
- CHEM 30A Intro to Chemistry-Inorganic (3 units)
(or general chemistry equivalent) - COMM 20/COMM 96PS Public Speaking (3 units)
- CSU GE Area A3 Critical Thinking Course (3 units)
*BIOL 65, BIOL 66, MICR 20 must be completed within five (5) years of nursing application deadline. Courses may be repeated only once for academic forgiveness or recency requirements to achieve a minimum “C” grade. If a combined “Anatomy & Physiology” course is taken, all courses in the sequence should be taken at the same campus.
The following corequisite courses are recommended to be completed prior to applying, but may be in progress during the semester an applicant completes the nursing application. A minimum “C” grade or better is required:
- PSYC 1 Introduction to Psychology (3 units)
- CHAD 70 Lifespan Development in the 21st Century (3 units)
(development birth to death) - NUFS 8 Nutrition for Health Professionals (3 units)
All prerequisite courses taken at campuses other than SJSU must be approved as equivalent. Applicants can check for course equivalencies for California public colleges and universities through the university’s articulation website. Another resource is Assist.org.
For courses that do not appear on either articulation websites, applicants will need to complete a nursing substitution form [pdf], which must be submitted (accompanied by course descriptions) to the nursing undergraduate coordinator for approval before completing the nursing application. The signed form will be included in the nursing application. For more information, please see Advising Slides (found in Resources).
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, online courses, including lab, taken during Spring 2020, Fall 2020, and Spring 2021 are acceptable. The grades received for these courses must be a “C” or better.
Credit/No Credit Courses
The department strongly recommends receiving a letter grade for prerequisite courses, only letter grades are calculated in the prerequisite GPA. Due to COVID-19 pandemic, prerequisite courses with CR/NC grades during Spring 2020 semesters will be accepted. A course with a CR grade will not be included in the prerequisite calculation.
AP Exam Credit
The department accepts an AP exam score of 3 or higher as a substitute for the following courses:
- English Composition
- Statistics
- Introduction to Psychology
If the AP scores cannot be identified on a transcript, please complete a nursing substitution form [pdf].
Policy for Repeating Prerequisite Courses
- No course may be repeated, unless for academic forgiveness at the same school that a “C-” or below was received the first time.
- BIOL 65, BIOL 66, MICR 20 may be repeated only once for academic forgiveness or recency requirements.
- Earning a “W” in a prerequisite course and repeating it to earn a grade does not count as a retake. The course that earned a “W” does not factor into any nursing application GPA calculations.
Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS)
The SJSU testing office offers the Test of Essential Academic Skills version 6.0 for students applying to any nursing program, including SJSU.
As of May 2021, we are only accepting in-person TEAS exams. Please visit the testing office website to register for a test date. Applicants may take the TEAS exam at other locations. If you took the test remotely during the COVID-19 pandemic and have used two attempts, you do not need to take it again.
The nursing department requires a minimum score of 78% to be eligible for admission. A competitive overall TEAS score is 90%. The department will only consider the TEAS score of the first two attempts regardless of version. The highest overall score of the two attempts will be counted. Students do not need to send their TEAS score directly to the university. Students will upload their test score to the NursingCAS application (see Application Procedures and Deadlines).
The nursing department does not enforce a minimum time requirement between repeated TEAS tests. We encourage enough time between tests to study and improve. Study guides are available online at the ATI website.
For updates due to COVID-19, please refer to the Advising Slides (found in Resources).
