GENERAL QUESTIONS


How many members are on the team, and what do they do?

Over the past several years, the squad has averaged twenty-two to thirty-two members. The team cheers at home and away football games, home volleyball games, men’s home basketball games, and numerous university and special events. Other responsibilities include, but are not limited to, creating and distributing publicity materials, and initiating programs and activities that foster pride in the institution.


How much does it cost to be on the team?cheerleader

The cheerleading program is supported both financially and administratively by the University. The University pays for: all uniforms, poms, duffel bags, summer camp expenses, choreography fees, and travel fees. Cheerleaders usually pay for their own summer camp outfits and shoes that may cost up to $150. These outfits will be utilized throughout the school year. If the team is selected to attend any type of competition, the university assists the team in paying for the travel expenses, hotel fees, and uniforms. Members of the team also sponsor fundraiser’s throughout the year to assist the university in financing the team.

How much time is required? 

Listed below is a rough estimate of the number of functions and practices expected of team members throughout the year. This information is based on past years experiences and is subject to change.

 Summer
• Attend a 4 – 5 day retreat .
• Attend 2 to 3 days of practice prior to summer camp.
• Attend summer camp for 4 days sometime during the summer.
• Return to school up to a week before class begins to practice and participate in Welcome Week.

Fallcheerleader
• Practice three days per week to prepare for football games, Nationals taping and special events. Practice times will be set at try-outs. (Approximately 6 hours per week)
• Attend and cheer at football games, volleyball matches and pep rallies (approximately 3-10 hours per week dependent upon number of games in a week – usually no more than two).
• Throughout the fall semester, the team works very hard to prepare a videotape to submit to the Universal Cheerleaders Association to be considered for the National Championships, which airs on ESPN. A number of additional evenings/mornings and weekend practices may be needed to meet this goal.

Spring
• Practice three days per week (approximately 6 hours).
• Attend and cheer from one to three basketball games per week including possible playoff games during Spring Break (approximately 2-10 hours a week).


Are scholarships offered? 

Yes Scholarships are offered. The Scholarship are to be determined by the coaching staff each semester. Scholarships range anywhere from $0 dollars to $2000 a semester. This amount may increase depending upon budget allocations and individual skills. All out of state members will be eligible to get in state on the availability of funds from the Student Service Fee Committee.


*Students on scholarship must maintain a 2.0 cumulative SHSU grade point average and a full load of classes each semester (12 hours for undergraduate students, 9 hours for graduate students).

May 15, 2021:  In Person Tryouts will be held at SHSU campus

May 16: 2020-2021 Cheer Team is officially announced to public.

General Requirements:

Freshman/Transfer Students-

  • Accepted to Sam Houston State University for Fall 

Current SHSU students-

  • Enrolled full time (Undergraduate:12 hours, Graduate: 9 hours)
  • Current GPA of 2.0 or above

Extensive Cheer Training/Experience is a prerequisite

One Letter of Intent stating why you want to be part of the Sam Houston State University Cheer Team and what you feel you would bring to our team.

Video Requirements:

INTRODUCTION:                                  

Please start your video by introducing yourself

  1. Name
  2. Age and school you are graduating/transferring from
  3. Position (flyer, back spot, base, tumbler, stunter)

TUMBLING:

 If you have to use spring floor for your videos, that is fine. However, you should be able to do all tumbling submitted on hard/dead floor as well.

 All tumbling must meet the AACCA guidelines (NO DOUBLE FULLS)

  • 3 standing tucks or fulls (these must be in the same video)
  • Standing tumbling pass

Example: Standing 2 back handsprings full

  • Running tumbling pass

Example: Roundoff back handspring full

FIGHT SONG AND CHEER:

Both the fight song and cheer will have a standing tuck in them. If you cannot do a standing tuck, you can improvise and do a standing back handspring, or a toe touch jump.

We are looking for SHARP motions, correct motion placement, CONFIDENCE, and high energy in both the fight song and cheer.

STUNTS:

STUNTS (MALES) COED:

All stunting must meet the AACCA guidelines

For the stunting portion, we are looking at technique from basics to elite stunts.  All stunts need to be true coed stunts. (If you are new to coed stunting and need an assist, we will accept your video, NO GROUP STUNTING)

In the stunting portion of your video, please include:

  • One toss stunt with a clean straight pop off
    • Examples: Toss hands, extension, lib, full up, etc.
  • A stunt sequence of your choice. This should include two stunts and a dismount (double down preferred)

 As a male, if you are more of a tumbler, please be sure to show elite tumbling in the tumbling portion of your video.

STUNTS (FEMALES) COED:

For the stunting portion, we are looking at technique and body control from basics to elite stunts. 

In the stunting portion of your video, please include:

  • One toss stunt with a clean straight pop off
    • Examples: Toss hands, extension, lib, full up, etc.
  • A stunt sequence of your choice. This should include two stunts and a dismount.
  • Double down from stretch or arabesque

STUNTS (FEMALES) ALLGIRL:

For the stunting portion, we are looking at technique from basics to elite stunts. Please make sure to state your position (top girl, back spot, side base, main base)

In the stunting portion of your video, please include:

  • A stunt sequence of your choice. This should include two stunts and a dismount. (double down preferred)

sam houston honors college requirements

As an Elliott T. Bowers Honors College student, it is important that you are familiar with and maintain the outlined requirements below to stay in good standing.

To stay in good standing with the Honors College, students must:

Maintain a cumulative SHSU GPA of 3.25.
Attend Honors Advising once per semester.
Maintain progress towards completing honors requirements.
18 hours of Honors contracts/courses
6 hours of Honors Seminars
Engage in at least 10 hours of Community Service per semester (Optional).
Completing at least 10 hours of community service each semester qualifies you for Advance Registration. Every semester, Honors students are the first group of students on campus who are able to register once Advance Registration opens. This Honors exclusive advantage allows you to schedule your classes in a manner that is most convenient for you without having to worry about the availability of seats in a certain course. If you don’t complete these service hours, you will have to register for the following semester’s courses according to your classification (Senior, Junior, Sophomore, Freshmen, etc) and the registrar’s outlined alpha schedule.
If you are an incoming student, you are grandfathered in and allowed Advance Registration during your first semester as an SHSU Honors student.
For example, if you are an incoming Fall 2021 SHSU Honors student, then you are cleared for Advance Registration during the Fall 2021 semester to register for your Spring 2022 courses without having completed at least 10 hours of Community Service.
However, during your first semester, you are expected to earn those hours and submit a completed Community Service Form in order to be eligible for Advance Registration during your second semester as a current SHSU Honors student.
Attend at least 3 Honors events per academic year.
