About Queen Margaret University

Queen Margaret University, Edinburgh Established in 1875 Approx. 5000 students Our small size offers a friendly and supportive environment for our students. The campus features a learning resource centre combining IT and library services, and a range of innovative learning and teaching spaces. The campus also includes 800 en-suite student residences, a student union building and excellent indoor and outdoor sports facilities. Courses at QMU cover many specialisations within healthcare, business and management, social sciences, drama and theatre arts, reflecting the vocational and professional emphasis of the institution. School of Health Sciences – offers the broadest range of health related degrees in Scotland including dietetics, nursing, occupational therapy, physiotherapy, podiatry, radiography, audiology, art therapy, music therapy, and speech & language therapy. School of Arts, Social Sciences and Management – offers a variety of courses, including British Psychological Society accredited programmes. We are the only institution in Scotland to offer Chartered Institute of Public Relations accredited programmes and to teach the CIPR Diploma. Courses in Drama and Creative Industries provides training for the actors, directors, stage managers, playwrights, producers, community theatre workers and cultural managers of the future. This school also teaches popular disciplines; tourism, hospitality, events, marketing and business management.

6.0 with a minimum of 5.5 in each language skill



6.5 with a minimum of 6.0 in each language skill

English language support

The Effective Learning Service is based in the Learning Resource Centre and offers free language support to all international students at QMU. This support takes the form of individual drop-in tutorials.

International students can also attend any of the programme of study skills workshops which is offered by the Effective Learning Service. These are small and informal sessions, held in the Effective Learning Centre. More information on these can be found here.

For those applicants looking for additional English practice and study skills training prior to commencing their main course of study, the Effective Learning Service runs both four-week and twelve week Pre-Sessional English programmes. These programmes can also be taken by students who fall just short of meeting the English language requirements, as a means of reaching the desired level of English before the start of their main programme.

Applying Through UCAS

All undergraduate applications are made through UCAS at www.ucas.com

What is UCAS?

UCAS is the organisation that processes applications to study full-time courses at universities and colleges in the UK.

At UCAS www.ucas.com you will find guidance on choosing the right course, completing your online application, tracking your application and funding your course.

Once you have applied, you will be able to track the progress of your application through UCAS track. The status of your application will be updated with the decision made by your university.

Key UCAS dates:
  • Mid September – Applications can be submitted to UCAS.
  • 15 January (18:00 UK time) – Deadline for applications to QMU courses*
  • 25 February – Extra opens
  • 4 July – Extra closes
  • July to August – Clearing

*If you’re applying through schools or colleges, sometimes you will be given an earlier deadline to fill in your application – this is to make sure they can write your reference and send your application to UCAS on time.

UCAS Extra

If the applications you have made for your chosen courses are unsuccessful, you could apply for other courses through UCAS Extra.

UCAS Extra is an opportunity for you to consider another course, even a different subject, without waiting for Clearing.

To be eligible for Extra:

All five choices must have been used
Your must have no offers or declined any offers you have received

If you do not get the qualifications needed to meet the conditions of your offer or you do not receive any offers though UCAS or UCAS Extra, you can look for places through Clearing.

Clearing is a chance for students to look for a place if they don’t have one. It’s also the final chance for universities to fill any places they still have available.

To look for a course in Clearing you must first be eligible. This means that either:
