The first documented use of the term “pulmonology” was by Thomas Willis in 1662, when he wrote “pulmonology” on his title page (he had invented a new word for himself). However, pulmonology has been around since at least 1AD when Galen described it as the study of breathing organs.[1] In 1828 Jean Cruveilhier was appointed Professor of Pathological Anatomy at Montpellier.
