Best private nursing schools in Utah

Private nursing schools are funded primarily by students, alumni, and private organizations. They receive no direct financial support from the state government. Private school students are often willing to pay a premium for their education, since these schools offer enhanced prestige, lower student-to-teacher ratios, and a more personalized learning environment. Utah’s private nursing schools offer prelicensure programs for two roles: registered nurse (RN) and advanced practice registered nurse (APRN).

Utah has well over a dozen private nursing schools, allowing candidates to choose their ideal fit based on program offerings, location, financial cost, and other personal factors. Several of these private schools focus their nursing coursework on the two-year associate’s degree in nursing (ADN). This group includes career colleges like Provo College, Nightingale College, and AmeriTech College. However, most of the state’s private nursing schools are four-year institutions that offer a bachelor of science in nursing (BSN) degree program. This group includes Brigham Young University, Westminster College, Everest College, and Stevens-Henager College. In fact, several of these four-year institutions also offer master of science in nursing (MSN) prelicensure programs for aspiring APRNs.

FIND A SCHOOLGraduates of Utah’s private nursing schools can expect robust employment opportunities and competitive pay. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the state’s registered nurses earn a median annual salary of about $59,000. BSN-educated nurses often land in the top pay quartile, receiving annual pay of $69,000 or more. APRNs can earn substantially more, typically $80,000-125,000 per year depending upon their field of specialization.

To provide a detailed view of the options, we’ve profiled below each of Utah’s private nursing schools. You’ll find them organized by major metropolitan area.

Accredited Nursing Schools in Utah

Heavily rooted in the Mormon faith the state of Utah has a population estimated a little under 3 million people. While the state as a whole is deeply rooted in the political aspect of the governing body, the state is also known for professional sports teams such as the Utah Jazz of the NBA as well as the Real Salt Lake MLS soccer team in addition to the six Division I universities that compete in NCAA sporting events. Although the state economy is driven by tourism, mining, and is set a tax rate the healthcare industry throughout the entire state can best be described as plentiful.

Nursing Education in Utah

Although the educational system can be summed up as being traditionally based there are several colleges and universities to choose from when opting for a secondary education. With various levels of degree programs available earning a Masters, Bachelor’s, Doctoral, and Ph.D. can easily be done given the fact that there are several financial aid programs where students can get a scholarship to cover educational expenses. Some of the most traditional colleges and universities located within the state include the University of Utah at Salt Lake City, Salt Lake Community College, as well as several other research universities and private nonprofit educational institutions.

While the overall employment situation as it pertains to the nursing profession appears to be a bit on the bleak side due largely in part to the vast turnover rate present throughout the state, the overall situation is believed to be set to increase over the coming years. Becoming a licensed nurse (no matter what specified area) is the most important aspects before being hired at locations such as the University of Utah Healthcare, Intermountain Medical Center, Utah Valley Regional Medical Center, and many of the other local healthcare facilities throughout the state. Future positions, and in particular those positions reserved for LPN and RN employment is slated to increase by approximate 35% although the salary will remain at an average level.

Brigham Young University School of Nursing

Brigham Young University is a private non-profit university entirely owned and guided by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. The ethos, beliefs, and practices of the university including required religious education courses; devotional assemblies; and a restrictive honor code for students, strongly reflect this affiliation. Approximately 99% of the student body are members of the Church of Latter-Day Saints.

Nursing education at the institution has accreditation in place from CCNE (Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education). Undergraduates embark upon a traditional BSN program and benefit from access to up-to-date simulation labs and exposure to the technology and software in use in clinical practice. Students undertake an average of 12 clinical hours per week during the six semesters of their upper-division coursework and these take place in a variety of urban and rural hospital, home, and community settings. An MSN program leading to certification as a Family Nurse Practitioner may also be pursued at the university.

Utah Licensing Info

The Utah State Board of Nursing is part of the state’s Division of Occupational and Professional Licensing. Review the following section to learn about what it takes to be fully licensed in the state.

License Eligibility

  • Submit online application to the Board of Nursing along with a $100 processing fee
  • Submit fingerprints for a criminal background check
  • Provide official education transcripts, including a school seal and information about the completed degree and date of graduation

Utah’s Renewal Process

Registered nursing licenses in Utah expire on January 31 of every odd-numbered year. It’s important to note the renewal period is not tied to the applicant’s date of licensing or their birthday, as it is in many other states. In order to renew a license, nurses must complete one of the following continuing education or work requirements:

  • 400 hours of licensed practice during the past two years
  • 200 hours of licensed practice and an additional 15 hours of approved continuing education credits during the past two years
  • 30 hours of approved continuing education credits

Renewal applications are submitted online and the renewal fee is $58.

Utah Advanced Practice Licensure

The state of Utah approves APRN licensure for the following specializations: nurse practitioner, clinical nurse specialist, psychiatric mental health nurse specialist, certified nurse anesthetist, and certified nurse midwife.

All APRN licensees must follow these steps to qualify for licensure in Utah:

  • Submit an online application and pay $140 application fee
  • Complete and submit a qualifying questionnaire
  • Pass a criminal background check
  • Have official transcripts sent from approved advanced practice educational program that also documents coursework in pharmacotherapeutics, diagnosis and treatment, and patient assessment
  • Submit national certification verification from an approved advanced practice certifying body
  • Individuals not licensed as registered nurses in Utah must submit official verification of a nursing license from their state of residence

Individuals whose specialization includes the administration of controlled substances must apply for a Utah Controlled Substance License. The process includes an application form, additional fee of $100, and a controlled substance affidavit. APRNs working in mental health must also complete at least 3,000 hours of post-certification clinical practice to be eligible for licensure.

Forms, additional information, and programs regarding advanced practice registered nursing can be found at the Utah Division of Occupational and Professional Licensing.
