Phlebotomy

The Certificate of Completion (CCL) in Phlebotomy program is designed to prepare a person to obtain blood specimens by skin puncture and venipuncture. The phlebotomist may find employment in hospitals, patient service centers, life insurance companies, doctors’ offices, outreach services, and donor centers. Students in the Phlebotomy program will be in contact with potentially infectious blood, tissues, and body fluids.

Upon satisfactory completion of the program, the students are eligible to take a national certification examination.

Admission Criteria

ALL STUDENTS:

High School diploma or GED.

Ability to fully participate in classroom, laboratory, or clinical setting program activities.

Completion of Program Prerequisites courses with a grade of C or better.

Submit current CPR card for Health Care Provider and maintain current status throughout the practicum(s).

Proof of current immunization: Measles, Mumps, and Rubella (MMR), Tuberculosis skin test (TB), Varicella, Tetanus/Diphtheria (Td), and Hepatitis B (HEB) vaccine.

Complete and submit the required proof of immunity and health declaration form signed by a licensed health care provider.

Submit to a drug screening and demonstrate negative results.

Background Check Requirements
Admission to an Allied Health program requires that students be in compliance with the Maricopa County Community College District Supplemental Background Check policy. Program applications will not be accepted without a copy of an Arizona Department of Public Safety Level One Fingerprint Clearance Card. Upon conditional program admission, the student must comply with all requirements of the current MCCCD background check policy.

PHOENIX COLLEGE STUDENTS:
Formal application and admission to the program are required. Applications can be obtained from the Program Director, a Health Professions Advisor, or from the Phoenix College web site.

The following is the suggested course sequence by term. Please keep in mind:

Program Overview

Every year, medical professionals draw blood to help physicians diagnose illness, treat patients, and save lives. Known as phlebotomy, the skill involves drawing blood for tests, transfusions, research, and blood donations. There is a need for responsible people with calm dispositions to work in the field of phlebotomy.

As a trained phlebotomist, you’ll be responsible for drawing a patient’s blood to obtain blood samples or collect donations. The Phlebotomy program is designed to prepare you to collect blood specimens by skin puncture and venipuncture. You’ll learn how to safely get samples using proper procedures, equipment, and techniques while maintaining governmental standards.

As a phlebotomist, you may find employment at facilities such as hospitals, patient service centers, life insurance companies, doctors’ offices, outreach services, and donor centers.

Why GateWay Community College?

The Phlebotomy program at GateWay Community College is a clock hour or non-credit program, which is a training program that provides skills for quick entry into the workforce. It has specific year-round start dates, and you attend classes four days a week, Monday-Thursday.

An evening Phlebotomy program is offered at the Mesa Community College-Red Mountain location. It meets for 20 hours per week, Monday-Thursday, from 5 to 10 p.m. Contact an Advisor for assistance.

New in June 2021 is a day program at Chandler-Gilbert Community College-Williams Campus. Contact an Advisor for assistance.

Virtual Pre-Enrollment Sessions

If you are interested in this Healthcare program, you will be required to attend a Virtual Information/Advising Session that will provide in-depth information and enrollment guidance.

Enrollment Session: Thursdays from 3 p.m. – 4 p.m. 

You also may take advantage of career services to gain skills in interviewing, resume writing, looking for a job and other career guidance. Through these services you will be better prepared to complete successful interviews and attain employment.

Program Cost Estimate*

Certificate of Competency in Phlebotomy:  $2,005  |  300 hours/3-4 months

*Months based on four days a week at six hours per day/four weeks a month for the day program at SouthWest Skill Center, while the evening program at Mesa Community College meets four evenings a week for five hours/four weeks a month. Actual completion times may vary. Costs include tuition, lab and estimated book fees. Amount based on current estimates and will vary. A separate $15 Registration Fee will be charged per academic year. This program is not financial aid eligible.
