The PhD in Security Studies is a research-based degree offered at the University of Calgary. It is designed to prepare students for careers in the public, private and non-profit sectors where they will contribute to the development of knowledge and understanding of security issues and challenges.
The program offers two concentrations: International Security (IS) and Military and Strategic Studies (MSS). Both concentrations are designed to develop critical thinking skills through an interdisciplinary approach, which includes courses from political science, economics, history, geography, sociology and international relations.
Students in both concentrations will gain a solid grounding in theory as well as practical experience through coursework that integrates theory with application. The program teaches students how to apply knowledge gained from their studies to real world problems through a capstone project where students work on an issue of their choosing under the supervision of a faculty member.
Candidates for admission should have completed an undergraduate degree with a minimum GPA of 3.0/4.0 or equivalent from an institution recognized by the University Senate.
