Homoeopathy is the most widely practised alternative medical system in the world, with about 20 million patients worldwide. The greatest number of homoeopathic practitioners are found in Germany, United Kingdom and France.

Homoeopathy was discovered by Samuel Hahnemann (1755-1843) in 1796 while he was preparing a malaria cure from cinchona bark. He took some of the medicine himself and developed symptoms similar to those of malaria, which made him realize that the substance could produce effects opposite to those of its original cause, thus forming the basis of his new system of medicine.

In 1810 Hahnemann published Organon der rationellen Heilkunde (Organon of Rational Therapeutics), a book in which he summarized his findings and theories. In contrast to other systems at the time, such as allopathy or traditional Chinese medicine, homoeopathy considers human beings as a whole and works on the principle that like cures like – a small dose of a particular substance will cure ailments caused by large doses of that same substance if administered under different conditions.
