As a transfer student, you bring a unique perspective to our application process and our community. As you begin your transfer application process, please refer to the resources below.
Penn accepts the Common Application and Coalition Application. We have no preference for either format and treat both applications equally in our process. We encourage you to review the features of each application format and use the platform that suits you best. You should submit only one application per admissions cycle and not mix-and-match across platforms.

To apply, you must meet specific academic requirements by the end of the term in which you are enrolled at the time of transfer application. Beyond academics, it’s important that you have demonstrated leadership skills through involvement in your current college community. If you’re interested in the Wharton School, you must apply to transfer after your first-year to enter for your sophomore year. There are no spaces available for entering juniors. Please note that credit equivalency will be determined after you are admitted.
Please don’t contact academic departments with transfer equivalency questions. Instead, review the course list in the University Catalog to determine if Penn offers similar courses.
If you want to transfer after one year of college, you must have completed:
One semester of calculus (MATH 104), which can be fulfilled by:
A score of “5” on the AP Calculus BC exam (no credit is awarded for the AB exam),
A score of “7” on the IB Higher Level Mathematics with Further Mathematics exam,
A course deemed to be equivalent to MATH 104.
One semester of introductory microeconomics, which can be fulfilled by:
A score of “5” on the AP Microeconomics exam,
A score of “6” or “7” on the IB Higher Level Economics exam,
A course deemed to be equivalent to ECON 001.
One semester of introductory macroeconomics, which can be fulfilled by:
A score of “5” on the AP Macroeconomics exam,
A score of “6” or “7” on the IB Higher Level Economics exam,
A course deemed to be equivalent to ECON 002.
Or, in lieu of separate introductory courses in micro and macroeconomics:
One semester of a combined introductory micro and macroeconomics course (ECON 010), which can be fulfilled by a course deemed to be equivalent to ECON 010.
We recommend that you satisfy Wharton’s foreign language requirement by the time you enroll at Penn. The requirement is equivalent to two semesters of college-level language courses and can be fulfilled by either completion of coursework or appropriate placement scores.

Curricular Requirements
NAVIGATE ADMISSIONS AND FINANCIAL AID
If you’re a transfer applicant to the University of Pennsylvania, you must apply to one of Penn’s four undergraduate schools: the College of Arts and Sciences, Penn Engineering, the School of Nursing, or the Wharton School.
Transfer applicants aren’t eligible for coordinated dual-degree or specialized programs, except Digital Media Design. All four undergraduate schools are academically rigorous and have their own requirements and policies. As you consider the different schools, review all options to be sure that you’re applying to the one that best matches your personal and academic achievements and goals.
Official approval of transfer credit takes place after matriculation and must be granted by the department from which you are seeking credit. Specific information about courses can be found on each department’s website and is available in the Course Register.
Remember to make your choice carefully: If you’re admitted to a specific school within the University of Pennsylvania as a transfer applicant, you won’t be eligible to transfer between schools.
Eligibility Guidelines
NAVIGATE ADMISSIONS AND FINANCIAL AID
At least one full year of transferable academic course work (8 courses) must be completed by the spring term prior to enrollment. Summer coursework taken in the summer immediately preceding enrollment will not count toward one of the 8 transferable courses.
Students who are completing their senior year of high school concurrently with their first year of college, or who are enrolled in a dual-enrollment program taking courses in college while still enrolled in high school, should apply as a first-year.
The University does not admit first-year or transfer students to enroll mid-year. Students who leave college at the end of the first term may apply to the first-year class entering in the subsequent September.
Penn maintains a two-year academic enrollment requirement. At least one-half of the total number of courses required for the Penn degree must be completed here, regardless of the number of transferable credits completed elsewhere. If you have completed more than two years of transferable work at other institutions, you may not be eligible to transfer to an undergraduate school at Penn.
Students who have already completed a Bachelor’s degree are not eligible to transfer to an undergraduate school at Penn.
Transcript Reporting Requirements
Records from summer school, study-abroad programs, or special college programs must be submitted in official transcript form with certified English translations, if applicable. These records will be considered along with other credentials.
If you have taken courses on a PASS/FAIL or CREDIT/NO CREDIT basis, you must have grades or written evaluations of your performance sent by the professor of these courses for them to be transferrable. If you attend a school that records only PASS/FAIL on your transcript for your first-semester or first-year courses, please request that your grades be released on the transcript sent to our office.
COVID-19 Update: Please note for Spring 2020, due to COVID-19 grading changes, various colleges and universities implemented pass/fail grading to accommodate the challenges of having an online semester. If the applicant’s current institution has a policy where pass grades are awarded for a C- or lower, then they will need to reveal those grades prior to enrolling at Penn in order to earn credit.
